Dominican Republic survives five-set battle against Suriname for ninth place

LEÓN, Guanajuato, August 31, 2025.– The Dominican Republic survived a five-set battle to defeat Suriname 3-2 (25-13, 25-15, 23-25, 24-26, 15-11) and secure ninth place at the 18th Senior Men’s Pan American Cup, held at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato.

The Dominicans closed the tournament with a record of three wins and three losses, while Suriname finished with 1-4, settling for tenth place.

After dominating the first two sets with ease, the Dominican Republic endured Suriname’s push that forced a tight tie-break. Suriname took a two-point lead in the third set and, with great momentum, extended the match into a decisive fifth set, where the Dominicans finally prevailed thanks to their blocking and steadier performance.

The Dominican team made the difference at the net with a 19-8 blocking advantage, in addition to being more effective in attack (62-60), service (4-1), and committing fewer unforced errors (21-27).

Dominican Republic’s team captain Héctor Cruz was the top scorer of the match with 24 points (20 attacks, 3 blocks, and one ace). Ronny Molina added 20 points (19 attacks, one block), while Luther Molina contributed 15.

Four players of Suriname scored in double digits: Shemar Jameson with 19 points, Gianni Ritfeld with 13, Zefanio Breinburg with 12, and Keven Sporkslede with 11.

Dominican Republic’s head coach Alexander Gutiérrez said about the tournament: “This tournament was a gain for the boys who don’t have much experience and who must take responsibility. Consequently, that lack of experience causes complications against lower-level teams unnecessarily. We are going to keep working and pushing to be well prepared for the Central American Games.”

Brazil turn things around and overcome the Dominican Republic

August 31, 2025.- Brazil recovered from a first-set upset to defeat the Dominican Republic on Sunday in the Round of 16 in Bangkok and become the sixth national team guaranteed in the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship.

Dominated by the aggressive Dominicans in the first set, the reigning South American champions responded with a flawless performance in the second set and built from there to win the match and take the spot in the quarterfinals with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-12) victory over the Caribbean.

Opposite Gaila González delivered 15 points (13 kills, two blocks) in the last match of the Dominicans in Thailand. The Martínez sisters Jineiry and Brayelín contributed nine and eight points, respectively.

Gaila Gonzalez DOM Attack

“Brazil played very well tonight,” Gaila reflected. “We had a great start, but then they managed to put more pressure on us with their serving and the match changed. They deserved to win. We struggled with our passing in some moments, and that’s an area we need to work on for the next tournaments.”

Brazil’s dominance from the service line (six aces to one) was one of the factors that led them to victory, as the South Americans also outscored the Dominicans in kills (46 to 40) and blocks (14 to eight), besides making fewer errors (20 to 27).

The World Championship Round of 16 will be completed on Monday, with the United States and Canada meeting at 17:00 local time (10:00 GMT) and Türkiye and Slovenia battling at 20:30 (13:30 GMT).

This was a very good competition for Guatemala, a high-level event, and progress has been made.”

Puerto Rico to Play for 5th–8th Place at the Pan American Cup

In the third set, the Dominicans rallied after trailing 13-16, cutting the gap to 15-16 with attacks from Rafael Burgos, Bryan Turbides, and Luther Rosario. However, Puerto Rico regained control with Vargas and Ellis, pulling ahead 23-17. After a long rally, Ellis put his team at match point, and Omar Hoyos sealed the victory with a spike that deflected off the Dominican defense.

Puerto Rico dominated in attack (43-30) and service (6-1), while the Dominican Republic held a slight edge in blocking (6-5). Errors were nearly even, 20 for Puerto Rico and 21 for the Dominicans.

Ellis led Puerto Rico with 18 points (14 attacks, 4 blocks), followed by Vargas with 13 (11 attacks, 2 aces). For the Dominican Republic, Luther Rosario scored 11 points (8 attacks, 3 blocks).

Puerto Rico’s middle blocker Angle Rivera said about the match: “We had a good level of play in the first and third sets; I feel we dropped it a little in the second. We go out to play hard no matter what position we are playing for or who our opponent is; we always give our best to represent our country.”

Dominican Republic libero Eliander Jiménez commented: “We had a good opponent in front of us, but I think the defeat was due to a problem of confidence in ourselves.”

USA Advances to Quarterfinals Defeating Cuba

LEÓN, Guanajuato, August 28, 2025. – The United States advanced to the quarterfinals of the 18th Senior Men’s Pan American Cup after defeating Cuba 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 26-24, 25-17) at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato.

The U.S. team closed the preliminary round with a 2-1 record to secure second place in Pool A and a spot in the next phase. Cuba, with a 1-2 record, finished third and will play for classification.

The United States came out strong in the opening set, jumping to a 5-0 lead and then 10-5, powered by the offense of Nolan Flexen, Kyle Hobus, and Daniel Wetter.

In the second set, Cuba responded with the efforts of Víctor Andreu and Carlos Charles. After a 20-point tie, U.S. errors gave the Caribbean team the advantage to even the match.

The third set was the most tightly contested, with both teams battling point by point. With the score tied at 19, the United States pulled ahead 23-19 thanks to a Cuban error and two blocks by Wetter against Yusniel González. Cuba fought back with attacks from Andreu, a serve from Thiago Suárez, and Endriel Pedroso’s offense to tie at 24. However, a block by Isaiah Preuitt against Pedroso and a Cuban error returned the advantage to the U.S., who took a 2-1 lead.

Nolan Flexen-USA

In the fourth set, the United States dominated from the start, opening a six-point lead (14-8) and maintaining control until the end. Ryan Barnett applied service pressure in the final stretch, and an attack from Parker Van Buren, followed by two Cuban errors, sealed the victory.

The United States held the advantage in attacks (43-39), blocks (11-6), and aces (9-4). Cuba committed one fewer error (36-37).

Nolan Flexen led all scorers with 18 points (16 attacks, 2 aces), followed by Ryan Barnett with 11 (6 attacks, 2 blocks, 3 aces). For Cuba, Víctor Andreu tallied 13 points (11 attacks, 2 blocks), while Yusniel González added 12 (10 attacks, 2 blocks).

Parker Van Buren spoke about what USA did to overcome Cuba: “We kept them on their feet with a lot of service pressure, I think that was the main thing. Our passers did a great job of fighting off their service pressure and our servers, particularly Ryan Barnett, did a fantastic job getting them out of system and acing them, and putting very fast balls on them. Maybe Cuba was a little uneasy coming off from a loss, while we came off of a win”.

Ryan Barnett said about the pressure he put on Cuba in the final stretch of the game “I just focused on hitting my serves in. It was great. Going into this game was playing our version of volleyball, the USA volleyball way. We will continue focused on ourselves in the next round”.

Canada Sweeps Colombia to Claim First Place in Pool B

LEÓN, Guanajuato, August 28, 2025.– Canada swept Colombia 3-0 (28-26, 25-23, 25-23) in an intense battle that decided the top spot in Pool B of the 18th Senior Men’s Pan American Cup, held at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato.

We’ve been training for the past two months together, and it feels like a finished product here in Mexico”.

Miguel Martínez “Amaranto” said about the match: “It was a very tight game. The set closings cost us. Step by step we are improving for Colombia. Now we are going to focus on the next round, we are already in the quarterfinals.”

Puerto Rico Wraps Up Pool-Play with Victory over Guatemala

LEÓN, Guanajuato, August 28, 2025.– Puerto Rico wrapped up the preliminary round of the Senior Men’s Pan American Cup with a 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17) victory over Guatemala, in the final day of pool play at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato.

With a 1-2 record, Puerto Rico secured third place in Pool B, while Guatemala finished fourth with a 0-3 record. Both teams will move on to classification matches, awaiting their opponents once pool play concludes.

Puerto Rico controlled the first set, although Guatemala managed to save two set points with a service error and an attack from Gerardo González, until Omar Hoyos closed the set with a kill. Guatemala responded in the second set, driven by middle blocker Jason Hernández and outside hitter Andy Leonardo, who kept the Central Americans ahead to level the match 1-1.

Omar Hoyos-PUR

Puerto Rico outperformed Guatemala in the main scoring categories: attacks (55-48), blocks (10-6), and service points (4-0). Errors were almost even, with Puerto Rico committing 29 to Guatemala’s 27.

Opposite hitter Jamal Ellis led all scorers with 19 points (13 kills, 5 blocks, one ace). Captain Pedro Molina also contributed 17 points (14 kills, one block, 2 aces), along with Omar Hoyos who added 13 (11 kills, one block, one ace).

For Guatemala, captain Carlos López led with 16 points, all on kills. Andy Leonardo and Jason Hernández chipped in 10 points each.

Jamal Ellis said about the match: “Puerto Rico has a lot of potential on the bench, and today there was an opportunity to make changes in the lineup, everyone knows how to do their job. We lost a set because of a lack of focus, sometimes we let emotions control us. We couldn’t find our rhythm until the third set, and the finish was good, but we’ve shown that we have a higher level of play.”

Guatemalan setter Adolfo Rivas said: “We tried to fight, but we dropped our intensity in the third set. I think the good attitude we showed in the first two sets was fundamental, but then we turned it off. We need to maintain that attitude for the upcoming matches.”

For Suriname, Shemar Jameson stood out with 13 points, all on kills.

Dominican Republic outside hitter Ronny Molina said after the match: “It usually happens to us that we get too confident against teams that don’t put us under much pressure, and that’s why the last set was tighter. We were able to finish the group stage with a win, and we hope to stay focused in the upcoming matches and win them all.”

Leonel Mahabali, setter of Suriname, spoke about the match: “The closing set was a hard-fought set, but we are still not happy with our performance. We are getting better each time, but we need to fight harder”.

We had great focus and strong determination to go out and win. We gave everything, we took risks, because if you don’t take risks, you don’t win.”

Puerto Rican setter Kevin Rodríguez commented on his team’s loss: “I think Colombia improved their serve, they adjusted, and we couldn’t execute ours. They stayed calm, while we got a little desperate because we knew this was a very important match. You learn from this loss, and there will always be another opportunity.”

The result also qualified rookies Slovenia, which defeated Argentina 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) earlier on Tuesday and got to four points, but still depended on a Czech defeat to advance.

Americans and Slovenians will meet teams coming from Pool E in the Round of 16 on Monday, in Bangkok. Türkiye and Canada are already confirmed to advance from the pool and their encounter on Wednesday, at 16:00 local time (9:00 GMT), will determine the matchups – the winners will play Slovenia and the losers will face the USA.

Olympic medalist Avery Skinner led the Americans against the Czechs, producing a team-high 15 points with 13 kills, one block and one ace. Fellow outside hitter Sarah Franklin added 12 (all in kills), while middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu tallied ten (seven kills, two blocks, one ace).

“We’re happy to have qualified, our pool was difficult to get out and I’m really proud that we did it with three wins,” Skinner reacted. “The Czechs started very well and we just weathered the storm. We knew they were a good team and just stuck to our game plan. We need to keep that mentality because every match is important and every opponent will give their best against us.”

Colombia Defeats Guatemala in Opening Match of the Men’s Pan American Cup

LEÓN, Guanajuato, August 26, 2025. – Colombia made a victorious debut in the opening match of the Senior Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup, sweeping Guatemala in straight sets 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-23) at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato.

Colombia’s next opponent in Pool B will be Puerto Rico, while Guatemala will face Canada.

The match began evenly, with Guatemala taking a slight 9-6 lead behind Gerardo González’s serving. Colombia quickly responded, tying the score at 10 with a block from Daniel Aponza. From point 12 onward, the South Americans never gave up the lead and closed the set with a block by Leandro Mejía against Carlos López.

The second set had the same intensity. Guatemala went up 12-10 with a block by Jason Hernández and a powerful attack from captain Carlos López. However, the offensive push of Andrés Piza and Miguel Ángel Martínez turned the score in Colombia’s favor (19-16), and once again the South Americans sealed the set with the strength of their blocking.

Felipe Castañeda Colombia

The third remained tight until 16-16. Colombia pulled ahead thanks to opponent errors, but Guatemala forced a tie at 23 with an attack from Andy Leonardo. Two consecutive mistakes by the Central Americans gave Colombia the victory.

Colombia’s blocking (10-3) proved decisive, along with their slight edge in attacking (38-33). Guatemala dominated from the service line (4-3), while errors were similar (21 by Colombia and 24 by Guatemala).

Opposites Miguel Ángel Martínez (COL) and Andy Leonardo Blanco (GUA) led all scorers with 12 points each. For Colombia, Juan Castañeda also stood out with 11 points, while middle blocker Leandro Mejía added 10. On the Guatemalan side, in addition to Leonardo, captain Carlos López contributed 10 points.

After the match, Colombia’s captain Leandro Mejía said: “It’s the first match and we’re just getting into rhythm. We did a good job staying focused and following the coach’s instructions. We’ve been training in cold weather, and now we need to adapt to the heat, but we did everything great.”

Meanwhile, Guatemala’s captain Carlos López admitted: “We always started strong in all three sets, but Colombia controlled the second half better. Our mistakes cost us the match; we need to work on that.”

Men’s Pan American Cup puts crucial ranking points on the line

LEÓN, Guanajuato, August 25, 2025.– The Senior Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup awards important ranking points for qualification to the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games.

The competition, to be held from August 26 to 31 at the Domo de la Feria, features twelve teams aiming to collect as many points as possible to boost their chances of qualifying for Santo Domingo 2026. The qualification system will be completed next year.

Augusto Sabbatini, Head Coach of Antigua and Barbuda: “The team has been training for sixty days. We’re bringing up a young team with a mix of experienced players. We are looking to improve for our next competition, the ECVA Final Four, which will be held in Antigua. This tournament is very important for us to showcase what we’ve been training in order to strengthen the team.”

David Preston, Head Coach of Canada: “We’ve had a very good training block. We have nine new members of our team that have limited international experience, so like most teams in their first year of their quad, we’ve made some good transitions. We do have some guys with some experience, so it could be a little bit different. Our senior team is preparing for the World Championship, so it’s been two agendas as we’ve been getting the guys ready. We are looking forward to seeing our young guys and how they handle this international event, so there’s a lot of excitement”.

Daniel Nejamkin, Head Coach of Chile: “We have never experienced a Pan American Cup with twelve teams, so we are very happy to be able to compete with everyone. We are glad to see so many teams from South America and NORCECA.”

Paolo Montagnani, Head Coach of Colombia: “We didn’t have a long preparation because I had to make a preselection and know all the players from Colombia, it’s my first year in Colombia. We did our best, unfortunately we had no friendly matches nor international events. I think we will be competitive and ready, we expect to have fun”.

Alexander Gutiérrez, Head Coach of Dominican Republic: “We will try to put on a good show because we are coming with practically a ‘B’ team due to multiple international commitments. Four players competed in Asunción, in Mexico for the Final Four, and in Guatemala for the U23 Pan American Cup, in addition to senior players who are just coming in and will have the opportunity to test themselves ahead of the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games. This tournament is for testing and preparing ourselves for the Final Six, where we will have our full roster. We will give the responsibility to the players so they can embrace their role in the national team project.”

Reider Lucas, Head Coach of Guatemala: “This is a high-quality event with a good level of competition, and we are very happy to be here. We came with the objective of earning the ranking points necessary to qualify for the 2026 Central American Games. We will aim to compete well and show a good image.”

Carlos Eduardo Schwanke, Head Coach of Mexico:  “This competition will bring us a lot of strength because we will be playing in front of our home crowd, and we will rely heavily on them to play in our favor. We had a good week of preparation matches. We are focused on this tournament. By playing match by match, we will be able to improve and achieve a good position for Mexico.”

Jamille Torres, Head Coach of Puerto Rico: “We are highly motivated after winning the Final Four here in Mexico; it was a goal achieved because last year we won in Puerto Rico and now here. Last year in the Men’s Pan American Cup we won the bronze medal, and the goal is to improve or at least repeat last year’s performance.”

Keven Sporkslede, Team captain Suriname: “We just finished playing a CAZOVA tournament, which didn’t go as expected for us, but that’s volleyball, this time it was not our time to win.  We got to play some games to prepare for the Pan Am Cup which was very good”.

Andy Read, Head Coach of the United States: “The U.S. team is very excited to be here. We have prepared for several weeks, we had several guys that were training with VNL players during the summer and some others that just got in, and some players of our U23 team. We think we have a very strong team to compete in the most important tournament in our hemisphere this year. We are ready to play”.

Rubén Wolochin, Head Coach of Venezuela: “Our main goal is qualifying for the Central American and Caribbean Games. The second goal is to collect as many points as possible for the world ranking and to compete again after Venezuela’s five-year absence from international competitions. We will go step by step, seeing where we stand, and trying to put on the court what we’ve been able to train.”

Cuba is scheduled to arrive later at night.

Canada and Dominican Republic advance to the Round of 16 of the Women’s World Championship

August 25, 2025.- Canada and Dominican Republic secured their qualification to the Round of 16 of the Senior Women’s World Championship this Monday, with one matchday left in the Group Stage of the tournament being held in Thailand.

Canada survives Spain’s momentum in a thrilling five-set match

Spain was very close to pulling off a sensational upset against Canada at the 2025 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship in Thailand. Twice, in Monday’s Pool E opener in Nakhon Ratchasima, the Europeans took the lead, but the North Americans reacted on both occasions and finally took the tie-break to celebrate their second victory and move to the top of the pool standings.

After five sets of very tight volleyball, Canada came away with a valuable 3-2 (22-25, 28-26, 24-26, 25-15, 15-10) victory, a result that keeps them on track toward the playoffs.

Both teams finished level in unforced errors, but Canada outplayed Spain in all three scoring elements: 65-59 in attacks, 11-6 in blocks, and 3-2 in aces.

Outside hitter Andrea Mitrovic led with 22 points, including two blocks, while her teammate Hilary Howe Johnson, who delivered the final point with a deflected shot in the tie-break, added 19 points, also with two blocks. Canada’s middle blockers also reached double digits: Nyadholi Thokbuom tallied 15 (four blocks, one ace, and a 63% attack efficiency), while captain Emily Maglio finished with 10 points.

Canada will close the group stage playing against Türkiye on August 27 for first place in Pool E. Both teams are undefeated with 2 wins each.

Dominican Republic advances to the Round of 16 after 3-0 sweep over Mexico

Dominican Republic became the first Pool F team to qualify for the Round of 16 of the 2025 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship in Thailand. In Monday’s opening match in Chiang Mai, the Caribbean side defeated Mexico in straight sets and remain at the top of the group with a perfect record of two consecutive 3-0 victories. Mexico is still winless.

The Dominicans controlled the match almost from start to finish and ended up celebrating a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) win.

Mexico’s 25 unforced errors (against 14 from Dominican Republic) were a key factor in the result, including the final point of the match, which came on a missed serve. The “Caribbean Queens” also outperformed their rivals in attack (42-32) and in blocking (6-3). Team captain and outside hitter Brayelin Martínez shined with three blocks, one ace, and a 69% success rate in attack to total a match-high 22 points. Her teammate Yonkaira Peña added 11 points, all on attacks.

“We are very happy about qualifying. Reaching the second round was an important goal. Now we have to prepare for the next one, which is to finish first in the pool,” said Dominican head coach Marcos Kwiek.

“We prepared very well for this match. The third set was the hardest, but we know Mexico, we’ve played them many times, we managed to neutralize them, and I’m happy with the team’s good work,” Kwiek concluded.

The third set was the only one in which Mexico managed to hold the lead for a stretch of the game. Serving was the only scoring element in which the North Americans slightly outperformed their NORCECA rivals (3-2 in aces). Opposite hitter Sofía Maldonado was Mexico’s top scorer with 13 points, all on attacks.

Dominican Republic will face China on August 27 for first place in Pool F.

August 23, 2025.- United States, Canada, and the Dominican Republic started strong on Saturday, the 23rd, with victories at the Women’s World Championship, held across multiple venues in Thailand. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Mexico were not as fortunate and lost their opening matches.

The Skinner Sisters Lead the United States

Sisters Avery and Madisen combined for 28 points in Team USA’s victory over debutants Slovenia, defeating them in four sets in Nakhon Ratchasima. The Europeans competed well for three sets, but the solid performances of the Skinners proved decisive as the United States prevailed 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 25-14) to secure their first win in Pool D.

Playing together on the national team for the second season, the Skinners totaled 28 points: outside hitter Avery led with 15 (14 kills and one ace), while opposite Madisen added 13 (ten kills, two aces, and one block). Outside hitter Sarah Franklin also contributed 10 points (nine kills and one block).

“We know we have to start this tournament strong because every team will give their best against us,” said captain and setter Jordyn Poulter. “Slovenia came out very strong and took the second set from us, but I’m proud of today’s collective effort. Everyone contributed and made a difference. It’s going to be a battle every night, and we’ll need everyone to win matches.”

Slovenia’s higher number of errors (30 to 17) was a key factor in the U.S. victory. Although the United States scored more attack points (53 to 50), the Europeans compensated with better blocking (10 to 5) and serving (7 to 4). The U.S. team shares Pool D with Argentina, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia.

Former Queens, Jamaica, take Bronze

Nassau, The Bahamas, August 23, 2025.- The deposed 2023 CAZOVA queens, Jamaica will not be returning home empty handed.

Jamaica captured the bronze in the Kendal GL Isaacs National Gymnasium with a 25-10, 25-21, 25-23 win over Guadeloupe.  After being rolled over in the first set Guadeloupe fought much better and actually led Jamaica before losing in straight sets.

Jamaican captain Sashalee Thomas led her team with 17 points spiced with 12 kills while Mychael Vernon added 12 and Anesia Edwards 10.  Stephanie Sarmezan countered best for Guadeloupe with six kills.

In total Jamaica scored 30 kills to 22 from Guadeloupe, 13 blocks to their opponents’ six and one more ace than Guadeloupe’s six.  However, Guadeloupe gained 19 points from the former queens’ errors while Jamaica cashed in on 25 errors by Guadeloupe.

A New King to be Crowned

Nassau, The Bahamas – August 22 – A new king will be crowned when the 19th CAZOVA championship climaxes on Day Eight in the Kendal GL Isaacs National Gymnasium, Nassau, The Bahamas.

That is because the newest hero of Bahamas Kyle Wilson put on a sublime performance to blast his team into the final while deposing the 2023 rulers Suriname 15-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 15-9.  The large crowd of screaming spectators were thrilled when Wilson carried the match into a decider with his unstoppable missiles.

But all of that did not prepare anyone for the unbelievable heroics in the fifth set.  The Bahamas took an 8-0 lead with Wilson scoring every point with seven thunderous spikes and a monster block.

With the crown slipping from the heads of Suriname they found no answer or counter for Wilson as The Bahamas launched to 12-4 with only a serving error by Suriname denying Wilson 100% of his team’s points.  Creeping to 4-13, Suriname finally surrendered when the home team closed out the set and opened up the Junkanoo celebrations.

Earlier Curacao continued their unbeaten run to book a date in the final with The Bahamas.  Curaçao who won Group B dismissed Jamaica in straight sets 25-17, 25-18, 25-17.  Barbados won the fifth spot following a marathon win over Trinidad and Tobago 27-25, 24-26, 25-17, 18-25, 21-19.

On Day Eight T&T will play Guadeloupe for the 6/7 positions while Jamaica and Suriname will clash for the bronze before the gold medal match is played before what is expected to be a full Gym.

Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago Women to Battle for Gold

NASSAU, The Bahamas, August 21 – Former six times queens Barbados and their archrivals previous champions Trinidad and Tobago will battle for the gold at the 19th CAZOVA championships being played here in Nassau, The Bahamas.

Barbados and T&T qualified for the final in contrasting styles.  Barbados was cruising to victory against Guadeloupe before dropping two sets and faced game and match point before sneaking home in the Kendal GL Isaacs National Gymnasium 25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 22-25, 17-15.

The Bajans who topped Group C without losing a set needed to rely on the attack of captain Ashley Jordan and Shonte Seale to pull off the win. In the deciding set Guadeloupe averted the end at 13-14 to then hold the advantage 15-14.  Barbados survived to take the set and game 17-15.

T&T were brutal in crushing and dethroning the 2023 queens Jamaica 25-11, 25-19, 25-9.  Jamaica had no answer for the height and power of T&T who dominated Group D and are heavily favoured to take their gold.

The performance of the CAZOVA teams at these championships has created impressive movements on the FIVB world charts.  Barbados have moved to 48th, T&T to 52nd, Jamaica to 53rd and Guadeloupe are now 55th.

Hosts Bahamas Men Create History

Nassau, The Bahamas, August 21 – Hosts, The Bahamas men won their first match against Barbados to create history at the 19th CAZOVA championships being played here in Nassau, The Bahamas.

After placing last in Group A the locals gave their fans lots to cheer for in the Kendal GL Isaacs National Gymnasium with a stunning win over former 10 times kings Barbados 22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 18-25, 15-12. The Bahamas who lost the 1994 finals to Barbados in the same venue had never beaten the Bajans in meetings since 1992.

The Bajans could not match the power of Bahamas’ attack or net and ground defence.  Barbados who have never ended out of the top four at CAZOVA will battle their arch rivals Trinidad and Tobago for the fifth spot.

Cuba Earns Semifinal Berth at Asunción 2025

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay, August 20, 2025.- Cuba secured a spot in the semifinals of the Men’s Volleyball Tournament at the II Junior Pan American Games Asunción 2025 with a straight-set victory over Colombia 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-22) at the Paraguayan Olympic Committee Arena (COP)

Cuba will face Brazil in the semifinals, while Argentina and Mexico will battle in the other semifinal matchup. Colombia moves on to play Paraguay in the classification round for positions 5 to 8.

From the very beginning, Cuba imposed its rhythm, jumping to a quick 10-3 lead with the effective serving of middle blocker Thiago Suárez and Alejandro González, combined with Colombia’s struggles in reception against the Cuban power attack.

Colombia responded early in the second set with a two-point lead (5-3) led by captain Jhon Mosquera. However, Cuba quickly tied and pulled ahead, never allowing Colombia to overtake them. A late attack by Mosquera brought Colombia within 21-23, but an error from the same player and a kill by Yusniel González sealed the second set for Cuba.

Yonnie Iglesias CUB blocks

The third set was close, tied at 9 points, but once again Cuba pulled ahead, capitalizing on Colombian reception errors. A strong serve from Dainer Ocoro gave Colombia hope at 22-23, but Cuba closed with a spike from Bryan Camino and another Colombian mistake to seal the match.

Cuba’s blocking was a key factor, dominating 12-3, along with the edge in attacks (47-37) and service points (4-3). Colombia committed one less error overall (12-13).

Thiago Suárez and Yusniel González led Cuba with 15 points each, with Suárez recording an impressive 7 blocks. Alejandro González added 10 points to the win.

For Colombia, captain Jhon Mosquera was the top scorer of the match with 17 points, followed by Ronnie Mosquera with 10.

Cuba’s libero, Dayron Gallego, said: “Colombia has the characteristic that after losing the first set, they lift their spirits; they’re a team that, if you let them advance, they gain more focus and get ahead. We had a few inaccuracies, maybe nerves. Tomorrow we’re going all out against Brazil, I think we have the tools to beat them, even though in the first match against them we couldn’t come away with the victory. Every day we’re getting better.”

Colombia’s coach, Iván Lovera, said: “I believe my team is increasingly understanding the rhythm we’re playing at; they improve from the start of matches toward the end. It’s motivating to play against a high-level opponent like Cuba. The boys did very well, and the progress comes from the conviction that we have the ability to play at this level, despite being very young. In the end, we were able to enjoy ourselves and play some great volleyball.”

Argentina’s captain, Denis Cabañas, spoke about the difference between the first set and the rest of the match: “We started out very relaxed, but Guatemala knows how to defend and attack well; we were able to stay patient and then take control to win. The semifinal against Mexico will be a beautiful match, we’re going to analyze them and define our strategy.”

After the loss, Luis Mendizabal said they could have maintained the intensity of the first set throughout the entire match: “I believe our mentality influenced the outcome a lot. I think we could have won the first set, but we lacked attitude. Now we have another intense match ahead against the Dominican Republic.”

We gave it our all to fight for a spot in the next round, and this was a very important victory to achieve that goal.”

Meanwhile, Dominican head coach Alexander Gutiérrez stated: “This is a tough pool. Yesterday Cuba played five sets against Argentina, and they have players competing in foreign leagues, so it wasn’t easy for my team to face them. We don’t have the same background as those teams, but we are gaining a lot of experience here, which is what we are looking for. We want to measure ourselves to see how far we are, and based on the results, the differences in sets have been small details. That means we are on the right path; we just need to keep working.”

We’ll rest now, and tomorrow we need to get in the right mindset to give everything against Mexico because we want to play a good match. In the morning practice, we’ll work on tactical plays to implement in the game.”

Paraguay’s libero and captain, Mariano Gómez, stated, “Obviously, we were a bit nervous, it was hard to loosen up. We really started playing our game late in the match, which was evident in the third set when we committed more fully. The nerves of our debut held us back.”

We held on and resisted Cuba’s attack and serve, playing smart when it mattered. We struggled with Cuba’s serving pressure. We had the tie-break almost sealed, and Cuba’s coach made a good substitution with a player who opened the game with his serve; the win was heroic.”

Cuba’s middle blocker Thiago Suárez said: “It was a tough match. We are known for being fighters, and even when we were two sets down, we hadn’t given up. We managed to push it to five sets, unfortunately we couldn’t get the victory, but we will improve for the next match.”

The match began with Colombian dominance thanks to the aggressive serving of Dainer Ocoro and Ronnie Mosquera, who put pressure on Mexico’s reception to secure the first set.

There was inconsistency in our game, and I think we need to handle the pressure better in the closing points of the sets to avoid making errors.”

For his part, Jhon Mosquera explained that Colombia is a team that plays with joy: “As long as we can enjoy every match, the results will be positive. Unfortunately, today we didn’t get the result we wanted, but we’ll keep working to improve our confidence both individually and as a team, which I think was the decisive factor in Mexico’s win.”

Jamaica queens ready to continue rule of CAZOVA

NASSAU, The Bahamas, August 16, 2025.- Queens Jamaica have no intentions of surrendering their first time CAZOVA CVC crown when the 19th serves off today in  Nassau, The Bahamas.

Jamaica’s coach Ricardo Chong who took over the women’s program four years ago admitted that as the defending champions they will have to deal with the target on their backs. “Everyone wants to win this tournament as it provides qualification to a higher NORCECA competition.

“I am confident that once our team plays, we have a good chance of repeating.  It is difficult to make predictions about the outcomes at CAZOVA since it will be the performance on the days of competition.

“The defending champions Suriname, The Bahamas at home, former champions Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago are always in the mix at these tournaments.  But as I said any of the other teams can be challenging on the day.

“While we added a number of new players, we are also short with just 10 players as the timing of the tournament denies us some of our players who are at college in the United States.  However, our group will be a competitive squad.

“It will be a very competitive tournament.  We also have some players who are experienced playing in gyms like here in Nassau where the screaming spectators are almost on the court.  That will play a key role in calming and lifting the other younger players,” said Chong.

Teams Enter Men’s Volleyball Tournament in Asunción 2025 with High Expectations

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay, August 16, 2025.– The teams competing in the men’s volleyball tournament of the II Junior Pan American Games Asunción 2025, to be held from August 17 to 22 at the Paraguayan Olympic Committee (COP) Arena, arrive with great expectations.

At stake in this event is a berth to the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima for the tournament champion, as well as for the highest-ranked team from the opposite continental confederation that does not win the gold medal.

Before the start of the competition, the technical meeting took place with the participation of Dominican double Olympic champion Félix Sánchez, a member of the Panam Sports Technical Commission and Athletes’ Commission, alongside officials from the Pan American Volleyball Union.

Technical Meeting

Diego Ferreira, Delegate of Argentina: “We came with solid preparation. This season, with several international competitions (U21 World Championship, Senior World Championship), assembling a roster was challenging. We carried out a dedicated effort throughout the year. We are confident we can deliver a high level of volleyball for the fans who come to enjoy the Junior Pan American Games.”

Lucas Müller, Delegate of Brazil: “We had a long preparation, about three months. This competition is part of the national team’s season, and I believe we are very strong to reach the final. We came to defend the title, Brazil always plays to win tournaments.”

César Lovera, Coach of Colombia: “The first objective is to get through the group stage. We believe we have a chance to move on to the next round, and from there we hope to play the best tournament possible. Preparation was short due to overlap with the U21 World Championship and the Senior Pan American Cup. The group is strong and ready to compete for a good performance at the Junior Pan American Games.”

Darian Ferrer, Coach of Cuba: “We will aim for the best possible result. One of our goals is to fight for a spot on the podium. We ask the boys to enjoy the competition, to take it one match at a time and to feel good, because from there, results will come.”

Alexander Gutiérrez, Coach of Dominican Republic: “For us this is a tough tournament; we’re in a group that everyone expects the medalists to come from. This will allow us to measure ourselves against the powerhouses Brazil and Argentina, to see how far we still need to go to keep progressing and consolidating as we move forward. We just had a good tournament at the U23 Pan American Cup, and we will try to do our best, fighting in every match to see if we can advance to the next round. This is a long-term project, and a good result doesn’t mean we’re already established, it means we’re on the right path.”

Reider Lucas, Coach of Guatemala: “This is a beautiful competition, with a very high level and well-prepared teams; it is the prelude to the senior national teams. We come with the goal of finishing the group stage in a position that allows us to advance to the next round and improve on our performance from the last edition.”

Renato Soares, Coach of Mexico: “We arrived two days ago and are eager to start the competition. We are ready to do our best. The group we’re in is theoretically not as difficult as the other, and we must face three important matches to move into the next round. We will try to finish first in the group, that’s our first goal, though it will be a very tough challenge.”

Ronald Sarti, Coach of Paraguay: “Paraguay is a developing team, a process we began two years ago with my arrival in 2023 to prepare for the Junior Pan American Games. It’s a young group with little experience but a strong desire to compete. We’ve worked hard and seriously to arrive in the best possible shape, and I believe we’ve succeeded because they have improved. We have a team ready to compete; you will see a different Paraguay, a young and hungry team. Even though we’re the least experienced nation, we will compete and give our all to represent the country in the best way possible.”
