We want to continue doing what we did in Puerto Rico, continue to grow as a team and continue to be one of the strongest teams in the area. We are in a good moment and we are going for the victory in this Tournament.

Dominican Republic is a very strong attacking team, and they put a lot of stress on us, especially in that second set. We couldn’t adapt until the third and fourth sets. But I’m very proud of my boys. They were under a lot of pressure, and they executed well”.

Dusan Bonacic, captain of Chile: “We are very happy, it was a categorical 3-0, we had control and the rhythm throughout the game, it was not something we expected because Puerto Rico is a tough opponent, but it’s good that everything went our way, I congratulate the whole team”.

We are happy, we come to this, to learn and when you win you also learn; It is one of the virtues that we have that we always try to learn something new. Now we wait for the match against Colombia”.
The middle blocker Daniel Urueña, from Peru: “Yesterday we were left with a bitter taste of not defeating the host, but today we came out more focused and organized to face Cuba, which is a power team, and we managed to get the victory. The strategy and discipline we had made the difference today.”
Mario Izquierdo, coach of Cuba: “We drew up a technical plan and we were not able to comply with it. We were playing even when the indications that the technical group raised were fulfilled, but after point 15, the athletes were not able to maintain tactical discipline while Peru fulfilled this better than us. We fell with our reception again and our complex 1 (K1) has not been very effective”.

A good teamwork, I am very happy for everyone and now we must wait for our opponents since we are qualified for the next round”.
Daniel Lewis, coach of Canada: “Brazil is a great team, for them it was their second match, and they were already familiar with the game. The first set was one of adjustments for the boys, in the second they had already found their rhythm and played well, which you could see by the final score of the set. I think that at critical moments we weren’t making the right plays, we were able to extend the match to a fourth set, although Brazil handled the pressure well.”
Fynnian McCarthy, captain of Canada: “I feel a bit frustrated with how we started, we weren’t as good as we expected. Throughout the game we were growing and increasing our level matching to what we’ve trained for the last 10 weeks. We’re getting better and the first match is always difficult. Kyle McCauley, USA Wing Spiker: “There was a great atmosphere in Guadalajara and that makes me and all the guys on the team feel very good for the game as we came out with great energy. We all contributed a lot to the win today and we feel satisfied about that.”
Daniel Nejamkin, Chile’s coach: “The United States played very well, we could never find our game; In the second set we managed to find ourselves a little more due to the opponent’s mistakes than due to our own successes’ points. We hope we can play better tomorrow.”

Co-hosted by the cities of Leon and Aguascalientes, which are separated by nearly 130km, the tournament will be played from August 17-26, with 64 matches taking place in both locations.
This will be the first time a Women’s U21 World Championship is held, following a decision of the FIVB Board of Administration in February 2022 to align the Age Groups in both genders. Previously, women would play in the U20 Age Group.
The tournament begins with the 16 teams split into four pools, with each of them playing their pool opponents once over the first three days of competition.
Mexico is in Pool A with Egypt, Thailand and Japan; Dominican Republic, Italy, Brazil and Tunisia form Pool B; United States and Cuba are joined by the Netherlands and Türkiye in Pool D; Serbia, Poland, Argentina and China will compete in Pool C.
After the conclusion of pool play, the top two teams in each group will advance to the second round, with two new pools of four teams (E and F) being formed. Again, the best two national teams will move forward, now to the semifinals.
The third and fourth-placed teams in their original pools will compete for positions 9-16 in pools G and H while the squads that get the same positions in pools E and F will play for positions 5-8.
All 16 teams will be in action on the opening day of the event, with four matches taking place in each host city. In Leon, hosts Mexico will face Japan at 20:30 local time (02:30 UTC, Friday).
In Aguascalientes, Dominican Republic and Brazil will meet at 14:00 local time (20:00 UTC), the United States and Cuba facing off at 17:00 local time (23:00 UTC).
This year’s edition of the U21 World Championship will mark the fifth time the event (including the previous editions in the U20 age group) returns to Mexico. It will also be the second time that Leon and Aguascalientes co-host the tournament, after doing it for the first time in 2019.
Played from 1977 to 2021, the U20 World Championship had nine different winners. With six victories (1987, 1989, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007), Brazil is the most successful nation in the category, followed by Russia/USSR (1991, 1997, 1999) and China (1995, 2013, 2017) with three and Korea (1977, 1981), Cuba (1985, 1993) and Italy (2011, 2021) with two. Germany (2009), the Dominican Republic (2015) and Japan (2019) complete the list of winners.
Among the players that stood out in earlier editions of the tournament are Cuba’s Mireya Luis, Russia’s Ekaterina Gamova, Brazil’s Jaqueline Carvalho, Japan’s Saori Kimura, Italy’s Monica De Gennaro, the Dominican Republic’s Brenda Castillo, Türkiye’s Zehra Gunes and China’s Zhu Ting.
GUADALAJARA, Mexico, August 15, 2023 – Mexico won a dramatic five-set battle against Peru 3-2 (23-25, 25-10, 25-19, 30-32, 15-10) in a Group C match that concluded the first day of the XVI Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup.
Peru claimed the first set, which was closely contested with a tie at 15-15 in attacks. Mexico recovered quickly and easily secured the second and third sets, but in the fourth, Peru rallied and put up a strong offensive resistance. In the fifth set, Mexico took an early 5-0 lead, enough to secure their first victory.
Mexico outperformed in attacks 61-50, blocks 17-5, and service points 7-1. Peru committed 33 unforced errors compared to Mexico’s 40.

Peru will face Cuba at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and Mexico will play against Colombia at 8:00 p.m.
Jorge Azair López, coach of Mexico: “We had many errors, I think the beginning is always tough. We got ourselves into a lot of trouble with reception and attacking, but the important thing is that we pulled through, and we’ll improve in the upcoming matches”.
Pedro Rangel, captain of Mexico: “We need to improve our mindset. We have the physical qualities, but at times, I feel like we get too confident, we let our guard down, and we can’t do that. We need to work on that because this group is very strong in other aspects”.
Juan Carlos Gala, coach of Peru: “These matches are like this. We had to face the home team, and our team was very inconsistent at times. The goal is to improve day by day, and we saw that in the way we reacted in the fourth set. I’m happy even though we didn’t secure the victory”.
Eduardo Romay, captain of Peru: “It was a match with a lot of ups and downs, we lacked consistency. We’re happy to have taken the fourth set; it helped us a lot emotionally. But I believe the second and third sets are unacceptable. For us, a fifth set was very valuable because I think we even had the chance to win”.
GUADALAJARA, Mexico August 15, 2023 – Colombia opened Pool C actions by surprising the defending champion Cuba with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-20) victory in the XVI Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup at the Astros Arena.
Relying on strong serving and a solid blocking game that allowed them to organize their defense, Colombia secured a significant victory in a group that also includes Mexico and Peru.
Colombia led in attacks 35-33, blocks 9-6, and Cuba managed 4 aces compared to Colombia’s 2 , with Colombia also capitalizing on 30 unforced errors from their opponents while committing only 18.
Opposite hitter Liberman Agamez and middle blocker Leandro Mejía were the top scorers for Colombia with 11 points each, and Andrés Piza contributed 10 points. For Cuba, outside hitter Julio Cárdenas finished with 11 points.
On the second day of the event, Wednesday the 16th, Colombia will face Mexico at 8:00 p.m., and Cuba will play against Peru at 6:00 p.m.
Sebastián Ortiz, coach of Colombia: “Colombia has a strong service, and today we did very well with variations in service speed. Cuba had some weaknesses that we knew how to take advantage of. It was a great match and starting the tournament with a 3-0 win gives us five points, which is wonderful”.
Leandro Mejía, captain of Colombia: “We were working towards this based on the intense preparation we had. We know Cuba is a strong rival, and we implemented what we trained for and got the result. We served very well, tactically, and our blocking was well-organized, which helped us strategically”.
Mario Izquierdo, coach of Cuba: “Our reception was very poor, and our outside hitters couldn’t solve some moments. Colombia served effectively, and we couldn’t respond to that technical aspect that affected us. Our second complex didn’t work, and we made many serving errors”.
Adrian Chirino, captain of Cuba: “This is the first game as a group we’ve had in these months. Colombia’s team has good players, and they played their game, and we couldn’t adjust. It’s another experience for us. We made a lot of mistakes, and as the competition progresses, we’ll improve”.
GUADALAJARA, Mexico, August 15, 2023 – Brazil had no trouble securing a 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-17, 25-17) over the Dominican Republic in the first match of Group B at the XVI Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup at the Astros Arena.

Carlos Schwanke, coach of Brazil: “We worked well, our serves were good, something that we managed to make an effect on the Dominican Republic, and it helped us have the perfect tactics to play against them. We played well, it’s the first match of the championship, and we did well with a focused team, aiming to play well”.
Matheus Goncalves, captain of Brazil: “The first game is always very difficult because there’s a lot of excitement, many emotions, and some anxiety, but it’s important to win the first game like this, 3-0. For us, it’s special to have the affection of the audience, the support of the Mexican people, and I hope it continues in the upcoming games as well”.
José Gutiérrez, coach of Dominican Republic: “Playing against Brazil is always a challenge, they are one of the best in the world for a reason. They applied a lot of pressure with their serves, breaking our reception, which put us in a complicated position. This is part of our growth; we have a long way to go, and we hope the players continue adding experience”.
GUADALAJARA, Mexico, August 15, 2023. – United States opened the XVI Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-23) victory over Puerto Rico in Pool A, at the Astros Arena in this City.

Andy Read, coach of USA: “First, I want to acknowledge the work the organizers have done in providing such an excellent stage. It looks impeccable, and the audience is so engaged. I also want to congratulate Puerto Rico for their good work.”
Parker Van Buren, top scorer for the USA: “This is thanks to teamwork, the time we’ve trained together, the confidence we have in each other, and our commitment to doing what each of us is responsible for.”
Oswald Antonetti, coach of Puerto Rico: “There are good things, it’s a young team that needs to improve, gain a bit of character. It’s important for them to get to know each other, keep working, and aim for continuous growth. We got discouraged at one point; these are teams with a strong presence, and that’s part of what we need to improve.”
Omar Hoyos, captain of Puerto Rico: “It was a strong, closely-fought match. At the beginning, we shook off the nerves we had and started playing, although we lost that first set. In the second, we started poorly; it was our first game, and we believe we can take away good things and improve for what’s ahead.”
Guadalajara, August 14, 2023.- The XVI Pan American Senior Men’s Volleyball Cup that will give the last ticket to the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games for NORCECA Confederation and ranking points, will begin this Tuesday at the Astros Arena in Guadalajara.
Cuba, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic have already qualified to Santiago 2023 Games; but the cup will grant to the best NORCECA team ranked at the end of the competition the last ticket for the Pan-American Games.
The coaches of the 10 participating teams agree that this tournament will be very balanced since the Pan American Cup will allow to continue a training process for the new talents, who will get more experience and tactics.
Mario Izquierdo, head coach from Cuba: “We bring a fairly homogeneous group, with players from the base categories who are given the opportunity to get experience to guarantee the reserve for the national teams. For years we have been longing for a so-called ‘second group’, which gives a certain rest to the elite figures that we have established within the senior team.”
Daniel Nejamkin, head coach from Chile: “These help us to prepare for Santiago 2023 will allow us to get there with the best level. The team’s bet is to deliver the maximum in each of the matches and present the best possible level. It is normal to have new players, we are always looking for new talents that come from the base teams to follow the process for the senior team and the best are here. We take the incorporation of young people very naturally.”
Andy Read, head coach from USA: “There are some players who come from the youth process, and compared to the under-21 team this is much more experienced, we have many players who we believe will have the possibility to be in the future U.S. men’s national team. We hope to see them soon on the World Championship and World League rosters. We are looking to improve in the ranking of the tournament and hopefully we will go home with the gold medal.”
Carlos Schwanke, Head coach from Brazil: “We have new talents with the intention of giving them more international experience. When Brazil is in an event the idea is always to be in the first places, to represent the country well. We always try to place our players who are not able to be in the roster of the VNL or World Cups, so that when they go to these tournaments, they already have experience.”
José Gutiérrez, Head Coach from Dominican Republic: “This is our fourth participation in the Pan American Cup, but this year has more teams and that is a special meaning. The idea is to try to continue improving, that the men’s team follows the line of development, because we are showing that it has been growing. We want the team to be able to maintain what it has shown so far, beyond the result that can be presented because there are technical objectives that we need to meet.”
Jorge Azair López, Head Coach from Mexico: “This is a strong tournament, quite even because the powerful countries do not bring their main teams and that makes us think that we have a very even competition. We are at home and always the goal is to win the event. We are in a process with a young team, with rotation of players, but always thinking about going out to win.”
Daniel Lewis, Head Coach from Canada: “We have a really interesting group here, a combination of young and experienced players. Playing in Mexico is great, there are many good teams here and good youth players, that allows players who need to rest and train for other events. We expect a really good tournament, that’s why we’re excited and happy.”
Sebastian Ortiz, Head Coach from Colombia: “We bring a mixed team, with young people and experienced players, who will try to give the best presentation and will be as preparation for upcoming events such as the South American.”
Juan Carlos Alas, Head Coach from Peru: “It is our first tournament in a year, it will help us prepare for the South American Games, but we will not stop competing. We have prepared well, it will help to adjust elements for another competition, we are in a difficult group with powerful teams, but we will fight”.
Oswald Antonetti, Head Coach from Puerto Rico: “It is important to continue with a process with the young players, we know they are talented and will meet a serious level of play and level in the Pan American Cup and we will keep constantly growing and take advantage of every opportunity we have.”

*2020 – GLOBAL PANDEMIC COVID
*2021 – 1ST EDITION WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN CUP FINAL SIX
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 13, 2023.- The opposite of the Argentina’s National Team, Bianca Cugno, was recognized this Sunday as the Most Valuable Player of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium. from Ponce.
In addition, the 20-year-old athlete won the Best Scorer, Best Serve, and Best Opposite awards.
Cugno was the best scorer for Las Panteras to win the gold medal in the final match against Puerto Rico in five sets with 16 points (14 kills, 1 block, 1 ace).
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 13, 2023.- Argentina was proclaimed champion for the first time of the Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup, defeating, 3-2 (25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 19- 25, 15-6), against Puerto Rico on the final date of the twentieth edition of this tournament, which concluded this Sunday at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.
Argentina, led by Olympic (bronze, Seoul 1988) and world (bronze, Buenos Aires 1982) medalist Daniel Jorge Castellani, was able to resist Puerto Rico’s push to take the victory and the gold medal.
Argentina won the first two sets, but Puerto Rico, backed by a huge fan base, rallied dramatically in the third set. The Panthers were dominating the set, 21-17, and the Puerto Ricans came from behind to take it, 25-23. In the fourth, the home team dominated it to extend the match to a fifth set. Then, Argentina came out with everything to seal the victory in five sets.
Puerto Rico and Argentina had met in the group phase, and the result was for the locals.
Bianca Cugno was the best scorer for Argentina with 16 points, (14 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace); Paula Nizetich with 12 points (10 attacks, 2 aces); and Daniela Bulaich with 11 (9 attacks, 1 blocks, 1 ace). For Puerto Rico, Pilar Victoriá with 22 points (21 attacks, 1 ace); Alondra Vázquez with 19 points (18 attacks, 1 blocks), and Paola Santiago with 16 points (15 attacks, 1 ace).
This gold medal is the best presentation of Argentina in the Pan American Cup. Previously, they had won three bronze medals (2008, 2013, 2015).
Puerto Rico, for its part, adds its second silver medal (2016, 2023), and has three bronzes (2009, 2014, 2017).
Daniel Jorge Castellani, Coach of Argentina: “It’s a huge happiness. We have worked very hard. I’m happy for the girls. Resisting, that was the key in the fifth set. We knew that at some point Puerto Rico was going to play its game, that they were going to be supported by the public; but we resisted. We started the tie-break differently and we had control of the match”.
Victoria Mayer, Captain of Argentina: “I am happy for this group that has been fighting for a long time, has been growing, has been doing many things and today we managed to crown it with this championship. It is the beginning of a very long process. I’m happy for the team because they all contributed. The aggressiveness and with the determination that we entered to play, that was the key”.
Fernando Morales, Coach of Puerto Rico: “At the end of the game I told the girls that I am very proud of this group. This is the first year of the replacement and we have completed three finals in three tournaments, we cannot ask for more. Finals are 50-50, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. We couldn’t win today, but we took three steps forward in this tournament because we beat the Dominican Republic, who had to get out of their heads and backs, and we reached the finals. The group grows playing in finals; win or lose, the group grows. I think from the beginning we were out of gas. We could not start. We took the third game at the end and in the fourth, they had a problem putting the ball in. We could never give 100% and it was understandable because we had fifteen sets in three consecutive nights and today five more. Also, in the fifth we were unlucky because the ball didn’t go in. For all the fatigue we carried, it was played well”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 13, 2023.- United States revalidated the bronze medal from last year in Sonora, Mexico; by winning this Sunday in four sets, 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 27-25) against the Dominican Republic in the closing of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachín Auditorium “Vicéns de Ponce.
United States dominated the fourth set, 23-21, and the Dominican Republic rallied to tie the score at 23-23, then 24-24 and finally 25-25. Then, United States got the two consecutive points to close the episode and the game.
This is the fifth bronze medal for the United States in the history of the Pan American Cup. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic, who were the champions of the past two editions, finished in fourth place.
The American team dominated the Dominicans in attacks, 63-55. In blocks, 14-12, and in aces, 6-4, the Dominican Republic led the game.
Simone Lee was the top scorer for the United States with 23 points (19 attacks, 4 blocks); Logan Eggleston with 19 points (15 attacks, 1 block, 3 aces); and Stephanie Samedy with 16 points in attacks. For the Dominican Republic, Gaila González was the best scorer with 25 points (21 attacks, 4 aces); Geraldine González with 17 points (9 attacks, 8 blocks); and Brayelin Martínez with 12 points (9 attacks, 3 blocks).
Brad Rostratter, Coach of Unites States: “I mean that game was electric, and Dominican is a very tough opponent and they played really well. It was a battle for that bronze medal match, and we couldn’t be prouder to take it home. I think the most important piece is we’ve had different people step up in different moments and the more we stay together, the more we get better as a coaching staff and as a team. The better that is for us moving forward down to the Dominican Republic (Final Six)”
Simone Lee, Best Scorer of Unites States: “I’m really excited. We were down in the fourth set, and we were able to comeback really strong. I think that showed just a lot of our team’s grit and fight especially after yesterday losing to Argentina in such a way and to have such a big turn around and play so well together as a team it just makes this moment even sweeter”.
Marcos Kwiek, Coach of the Dominican Republic: “It wasn’t what we wanted, obviously. We wanted to be playing in the final now, but we were able to get a lot out of the tournament. We had a lot of young players in the rotation, and they responded well. This tournament helped us to have the youngsters under pressure starting with the older ones, and that was very positive. Now, our total focus is on the Final Six, NORCECA Continental and the Olympic qualifier.”
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 13, 2023.- Colombia and Peru starred in another South American duel at the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.
Colombia, who was down 2-1 in sets, made a comeback to win the match with scores of 22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 15-7, against Peru and occupy fifth place in the tournament.
Both national teams met in the group stage and played five sets, Colombia taking the victory as well.
Amanda Coneo led Colombia’s offense with 30 points (26 kills, 4 blocks); Ana Karina Olaya with 21 points (18 kills, 3 blocks); and Dayana Segovia with 10 points (9 attacks, 1 block). For Peru, Ysabella Sánchez with 21 points (18 attacks, 1 block, 2 aceS); Flavia Montes and Karla Ortiz added 10 points each.
Colombia dominated Peru in attacks, 72-58; in blocks, 14-11; and in aces Peru surpassed its opponent, 4-2.
Antonio Rizola Neto, Coach of Colombia: “It’s a great victory. We are here because of Cristóbal (Marte, president of NORCECA) Cristóbal put us here. Out of respect for him and his help we are here. It is a joy to come out with the victory and fifth place, it is an important position for Colombia. And I want to dedicate it to Cristóbal for the effort he has made for us to be here. Many thanks to Cristóbal and NORCECA”.
Amanda Coneo, Colombia’s Best Scorer: “We knew it was going to be like a final. Peru was not going to allow another defeat like the previous one. I am very proud of the team that knew how to handle the whole game. We kept a cool head to be able to advance in the other sets. Without them I can’t do anything and each one had its moment. Thank God I was able to contribute to the victory”.
Francisco Hervas Tirado, Coach of Peru: “For us it has been a very interesting tournament. We achieved a bit of what we were looking for, which was to give the team a run, try some things and we have the conclusions that we must continue working on how to improve in those fifth sets, which is costing us a little. I am happy with the work of the girls because they made a great effort in this very tough tournament”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 13, 2023.- Mexico defeated Canada, 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23) this Sunday to claim the seventh position of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.
Canada was dominating the fourth set, 22-19, and Mexico made the final comeback to close the set, 25-23, and claimed victory on the last day of the tournament.
Mexico dominated Canada in all stats with 57-53 in attacks, 10-9 in blocks and 7-5 in aces.
The Mexican opposite Karen Rivera was the best scorer of the match with 27 points (23 attacks, 1 block and three aces); captain Jocelyn Urias with 17 points (10 kills, 7 blocks); and María Fernanda Rodríguez with 10 points in attacks. For Canada, Vicky Savard with 17 points (16 attacks, 1 block); Andrea Mitrovic with 17 points in attacks; and Sydney Grills with 13 points (7 attacks, 2 blocks, 4 aces).
Nicola Negro, Coach of Mexico: “This was our final and happily we got seventh. We expected to be in a better position, but this was our end and we won. The tournament was very positive considering how we got to Ponce and how we have grown. We finished with 4-4 and with important victories against Puerto Rico and Canada. They are victories that give us morale and confidence. We hope to recover the cast and give some continuity to our work”.
Karen Rivera, Best Scorer of Mexico: “We also thought we would close this tournament well because next week we will travel to the Dominican Republic (Final Six), so it is very important for the team’s spirit. I am very happy, and I finish with a good taste in my mouth. Despite the past games, I think I finished in a good way. Happy to contribute to my team”.
Shannon Winzer, Coach of Canada: “I still don’t think we’re really far, really close to our full potential. In this game, I thought when we could pass, we played well, and our passing broke down at the end of that fourth match when we were up 22-19, passing broke down and we lost the game. I think that’s sort of been our story this whole tournament. We struggle to control that first contact and it’s almost impossible to beat teams with our level of passing right now. So, our A team will get back together, we’ll have our full squad for the continental NORCECA championship. This tournament was an opportunity for us to try and develop some young athletes and at the NORCECA we’ll have our full team and we’ll be looking to play for a gold medal there”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 12, 2023.- The Puerto Rican National Team will play for the gold medal against Argentina by defeating the Dominican Republic this Saturday in five exciting sets, 3-2, in semifinals of the XX Pan American Cup Senior Women’s Volleyball at the Juan “Pachin” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.
Puerto Rico took the victory with partial scores of 25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-7.
The Puerto Ricans made a great comeback after losing the second and third sets, to extend the match to a fifth set. Puerto Rican spiker Paola Santiago was the protagonist of the decisive set. With Santiago on serve, Puerto Rico achieved a rally of five consecutive points, including two aces, to obtain a 7-3 lead. She herself attacked for an 8-3 advantage. Puerto Rico had control of the set to win 15-7 and struck out her ticket to the final. Santiago scored seven of Puerto Rico’s 15 points in the fifth set.
Alondra Vázquez was the best scorer for Puerto Rico with 22 points (20 attacks, 2 blocks); Pilar Victoria with 15 points (11 attacks, 3 blocks, 1 ace); and Paola Santiago with 14 points (12 attacks, 2 aces). For the Dominican Republic, Bethania de la Cruz with 20 points (14 attacks, 2 blocks, 4 aces); Brayelin Martinez with 17 points (15 attacks and 2 blocks); and Gaila Gonzalez with 17 points (15 attacks and 2 blocks).
Fernando Morales, Coach of Puerto Rico: “Victory has arrived! We’ve been waiting 11 years for this. We knew this group was going to do it. Maybe we didn’t think it was going to be so soon, but we knew they would. They didn’t go away, without our two most important players Brittany (Abercrombie) and Shara (Venegas). This group does not give up. They don’t doubt them. They are not afraid of anyone, and they have shown it. We had a bad game against Mexico, we came back, and we had three good games in a row (all to five sets). The key today was aggressiveness and Paola Santiago, who came off the bench, changed our game in everything: offensively, serving, she made the rally, and the digs. She did everything in the fifth set. We will look for the gold tomorrow (against Argentina). We are already here; tiredness won’t be a factor. The tournament has been long and strong, but we don’t have to think about anything else”.
Paola Santiago, Outside Hitter of Puerto Rico: “I have no words about this victory. It was great teamwork. We all contributed to this victory. I am very proud of the work we have done this summer. I stayed calm and followed Fernando’s (Morales, coach) instructions to serve Brayelin (Martínez). He was cold-hearted to attack her with the serve and that’s how it was”.
Marcos Kwiek, Coach of the Dominican Republic: “It was a good game. A match in which Puerto Rico was very good in the fifth set. The entire game was good. In the fifth set we were way down. They pressured us well from the beginning with the serve and we didn’t know how to react. Congratulations to them. Tomorrow we will fight for that bronze (against the United States). We are going to go out as usual, a team that will seek the medal and the results, which is very important for us”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 12, 2023.- Argentina surprised United States in the semifinal with a victory, 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 27-25), to advance to the match by the gold medal this Sunday of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachin” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.
The Panthers dominated the first set 23-20. United States managed to tie (23-23) the score. Paula Nizetich attack for the point 24 and Argentina’s set point, but their never reached the final point. United States closed out the set, 26-24. The second was the other way around since United States dominated 23-20 and couldn’t close out. Argentina won the second set and tied the match.
In the third, Argentina dominated the set 24-16, but United States made four straight points to close the lead, 24-20. An error in the service of United States gave the point 25.
The excitement intensified in the fourth set. Argentina was ready to win the game with the score 24-20, but United States had a plan and tied it (24-24), and then at 25-25. The middle blocker Candelaria Herrera attacked twice to close the set, 27-25 giving the victory to Argentina.
Argentina will play this Sunday for the gold medal at 6:00 p.m. United States for bronze at 4:00 p.m. Their opponents will be known at the end of the second semifinal.
Argentinian opposite Bianca Cugno was the best scorer of the match with 23 points (20 attacks, 1 block, 2 aces); Paula Nizetich contributed 15 points (13 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace); and Candelaria Herrera with 11 points (10 attacks and 1 ace). For the United States, Simone Lee with 18 points (16 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace); Taylor Mims with 15 points (14 attacks and 1 ace); and Madeleine Gates with 12 points (7 attacks, 4 blocks and 1 ace).
Daniel Jorge Castellani, Coach of Argentina: “Happiness is what I feel. Congratulations for the girls because they have worked very hard. We had two very important rivals and high-level games with Canada (quarterfinal) and the United States (semifinal). Today we knew that the United States was better than Canada and we had to surpass them. The girls have outdone themselves once again. I am learning to coach women’s volleyball. For me it is all new. Being five (points), eight (points) up, going back down, going up again… it’s all a roller coaster. I must get used to it, but the girls have remained calm, played, and got the game. And tomorrow we are going to enjoy the final”.
Paula Nizetich, Outside Hitter of Argentina: “It is very satisfying to make history again with this group that has been working for a long time. It is a very great emotion to make history with Las Panteras. I told my teammates that Argentina must be always an aggressive team, that we don’t give up, that we have patience and that we play intelligently that the game must change, and it happened. Tomorrow we are going with more desire and more battle-hardened than today”.
Brad Rostratter, Coach of United States: “Argentina played great. They played really, well. They did a lot of things that are high level. (Tomorrow) is an important match so we need to respond and be ready to compete with Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 12, 2023.- Peru will play against Colombia for positions 5/6 of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup, defeating Canada this Saturday in three close sets (3-0) with scores from 25-20, 25-22, 25-21, at the Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.
Peru fell, 3-2, to Canada in the group stage. The Peruvians managed to maintain control of each set and the advantage, when their opponents tried to come from behind.
The triumph guided Peru to the match for positions 5/6 against Colombia this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Canada will play Mexico for positions 7/8.
The captain of Peru, Karla Ortiz, was the best scorer of the match with 20 points (18 kills, 1 block, 1 ace); Ysabella Sánchez contributed with 14 points (13 attacks, 1 ace); and María Paula Rodríguez with 12 points (10 attacks, 1 blocks, 1 ace).
For Canada, Shainah Joseph finished with 12 points (11 kills and one block) and Andrea Mitrovic with 11 pts.
Francisco Hervas Tirado, Coach of Peru: “The team is very proud that the girls are doing an important job. We needed a joy. You work a lot and, in the end, sometimes you fall short, and you don’t quite find that reward. Today I am very happy for them because it was a very important game for everyone. Now, to enjoy it and think about tomorrow’s game (against Colombia). We had already lost 3-2 with Canada and we considered the opportunity to have a challenge; and tomorrow we will have it with Colombia, which we also lost 3-2 and we are going with the same idea. Sometimes life doesn’t give you that opportunity to have a second chance so quickly. We will have it now, and we are going to try to take advantage of it”.
Ysabella Sánchez, Outside hitter of Peru: “We went all out because we wanted to win. We wanted to fight for fifth place because the match we lost with them (Mexico) we lost due to lack of concentration, I think. This time we went all out. For tomorrow we are focused against Colombia. It will be a difficult match, but we are going to give it our all”.
Shannon Winzer, Coach of Canadá: “Tomorrow, we play Mexico. Mexico’s been playing some good volleyball. Today, we absolutely underperformed. Peru did a good job, and they took advantage of our poor performance, and they won the game. It’s difficult to win games when we make so many errors and we can’t have that. This is international volleyball the game moves too quick and there is not a good performance”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 12, 2023.- Colombia defeated Mexico, 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-22) in the seventh day of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup, and will play this Sunday for positions 5/6 at the Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.

For Mexico, captain Jocelyn Urias with nine points (6 attacks, 3 blocks); Karen Rivera with nine (all in attacks); and María Fernanda Rodríguez with eight (6 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace).
Antonio Rizola Neto, Coach of Colombia: “A position we didn’t want to be in. We wanted to be in the semifinal but now the best position is fifth. We must fight for it with everything, as we fought today. We played tactically disciplined, mainly with the quality of our serve, and the blocking made the difference at the end of the third set. Victory always makes me happy.”
Jocelyn Urias, Captain of Mexico: “We entered a little weak. We had to have pushed from the start. Colombia did not enter with all the energy in the world either, and if we had entered with that energy, perhaps the result would have been different. Colombia is a very complete team. It has always been a good fight against Mexico. Tomorrow, we want to close as well as possible and always end with the best”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 12, 2023.- Chile ended its participation in the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup with a three-set victory, 3-0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-18) against Costa Rica at the Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.
This was the first victory for Chile. The Chileans finish in the ninth position of the tournament, and Costa Rica in 10th.

For Costa Rica, Marcela Araya with eight points in attacks; María Fernanda Alfaro with five points (3 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace); and Tannia Carazo with four points, all in attacks.
Alejandro Marín Hormazábal, Coach of Chile: “We are very happy. This victory was what we had been looking for during the tournament, and today it was given to us. We played very well. Returning to Chile and having to face the South American Tournament with a victory is very positive for the spirit of the girls and for us as a staff as well. We leave happy, and at the Pan American Games (in Chile) we are going to fight for a medal”.
Beatriz Novoa, Captain of Chile: “It is always good to finish a tournament with a victory. In this championship we made a good demonstration, compared to other Pan American Cups that we have participated in. Very happy for the group, but we still have many things to improve. I gave the team everything I wanted and what I could. I am very satisfied, but never comfortable. I will continue training and improving”.
Pablo Acuña, Coach of Costa Rica: “The important thing for us in these competitions is to analyze the team’s performance well. We got a lot of feedback on what we can improve at the K1 level because I think it was a big problem. In addition, the reception and attack from the serve. That is what we are looking for in this tournament, to give us the indicators where we must improve to work on them”.

BELIZE CITY, Belize, August 12, 2023 – Guatemala only needed one set to become the Champion of the 22nd edition of the AFECAVOL Men’s Central American Volleyball Cup, and they achieved this against Panama on the last day of competition, winning the game 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18).
Guatemala comfortably dominated in attacks with a 16-point difference, tallying 41-25. The blocks, were 10-4 in favor of Guatemala, while in services, Panama was more effective with 6 to 3.

Guatemala finished the tournament with five wins and one loss, while Panama closed with two wins and four losses.
Reider Lucas, Guatemala Coach: “I said at the beginning in the preliminary inquiry that it was going to be a very balanced tournament, and at the same time, it was going to be very competitive due to the rivalry among the countries. This makes the event even more beautiful. As you can see, the champion is decided on the last day. We are very happy; this is the fourth edition we have won. We trusted a lot of young athletes, and we knew that with them, we could achieve a result. We have athletes with a longer life in volleyball, which helps us a lot within the group. We missed some athletes due to personal commitments, but they are part of this process.”
Horacio Angulo Calderón, Panama Coach: “We faced a quite solid team; we tried to play our game, but Guatemala worked very well. The assessment I make of the tournament is that it’s quite competitive. Guatemala lost to Costa Rica. The teams came to do their job, and it shows that fatigue reveals many things at some point; my team fell due to physical fatigue, we tried and fought until the end.”
BELIZE CITY, Belize, August 12, 2023 – With a score of 3-1, Nicaragua emerged victorious against the hosts in the final match of the AFECAVOL Men’s Central American Volleyball Cup, 25-18, 14-25, 25-19, and 32-30.
Belize dominated in blocks 14-5 and in services with 5-2. In the attack, both countries were tied at 57.

Belize and Nicaragua concluded the tournament with a record balance of three wins and three losses.
Albert Humes, Belize Coach: “The team has put heart and unity to make our country proud, but it hasn’t been good enough for us. We must go back to the drawing board and see where we have deficiencies and resolve them. This has been a great tournament that I have been training for over 30 years, and this is a process where I have seen the teams so competitive, for example, Honduras loses one day and then wins the next day, a constant up and down. So, this is a beautiful tournament this year, and I hope we continue to have tournaments like this. The quality of the product produced by AFECAVOL and delivered to the world is excellent, and we have shown that we can reach the level of major competitions”.
Jorge Mena, Nicaragua Coach: Did not attend the interview.
BELIZE CITY, Belize, August 12, 2023 – In the second match of the final day of the AFECAVOL Men’s Central American Volleyball Cup, Honduras defeated Costa Rica in five sets: 26-24, 25-21, 25-27, 19-25, 15-12.

Honduras and Costa Rica concluded the tournament with two wins and four losses.
Marco Sugiyama, Honduras coach: “Analyzing the tournament, there was a lot of competition between the teams, a lot of imbalances among us, but we need to start the next competition with better performance in order to compete for medals. I am happy with the boys, the competition is very good, and it has been a great joy to participate. We will be better prepared for the next competition”-
Johan Morales, Costa Rica coach: “I am disappointed in myself, I did not expect these results because we have a fairly strong selection. We came with a goal that was not achieved. It was a tournament with many ups and downs, with teams that caused surprises. We knew the two strongest rivals were Guatemala and Nicaragua, and coincidentally, we beat them. We forgot about the other teams. The blow of anxiety and happiness from beating the Champion after approximately eight years of not doing so was a double-edged sword because on the next day, when we played against El Salvador, a team we knew because they even practiced in Costa Rica, they beat us 3-0 and there the team declined psychologically. We tr
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 11, 2023.- Puerto Rico, host country of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup, gave its fans another exciting match in five sets by defeating Colombia to claim the last available spot for the semifinals of the tournament that takes place at the Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.
Puerto Rico made a great comeback after a 1-2 deficit in sets against Colombia to get the victory with scores of 25-20, 17-25, 20-25, 25-20,15-11.
The Puerto Ricans lost the fourth set, 17-19, but managed to tie it (19-19). Colombia called a timeout, but Puerto Rico returned to the court and took off, 21-19. Colombia requested its second time out. Dariana Hollingsworth, Pilar Victoriá, Paola Rojas and Alondra Vázquez made the four points needed to win the fifth set, the match and a ticket to the semifinal.
Alondra Vázquez was the best scorer for Puerto Rico with 18 points (18 kills), Dariana Hollinsgworth with 15 points (14 kills, 1 ace); and Pilar Victoria with 12 points, all in attacks. For Colombia, Ana Karina Olaya with 19 points (18 attacks, 1 ace); Dayana Segovia with 18 points (13 attacks, 2 blocks, 3 aces); and Amanda Coneo with 16 points (15 attacks, 1 block).
Puerto Rico and Colombia finished the game with the same attacks, 57-57. In blocks, the locals dominated Colombia, 8-6; and the South Americans beat Puerto Rico, 8-4, in aces.
Colombia will play for the classification for positions 5 to 8 at 2:00 p.m. against Mexico, and Puerto Rico will face the Dominican Republic at 8:00 p.m. in the semifinal.
Fernando Morales, Coach of Puerto Rico: “It was a victory with a lot of character. I think yesterday’s game drained us a bit, and we didn’t have a lot of energy. This is the best victory of the summer because on a day when we weren’t playing well and we were able to stay disciplined, patient, there was trust between them, we trusted the game plan and we were able to get it out. And great teams put out great games when they don’t play well. Tomorrow, again, with the Dominican Republic we will do the same game plan that worked. We will see what we can change to take the victory. Being in the semifinal is another objective achieved and tomorrow is a fight, which is the first opportunity to win a medal. Let’s go all out tomorrow.”
Alondra Vázquez, Top Scorer for Puerto Rico: “We are happy because qualifying for the semifinals was one of our goals, as well as qualifying for the Pan American Games, and we also want to be on the medal podium. Colombia is a great team. We knew it would be a tough game, that we had to be patient, and we knew they were coming to play well too. At first, we started a bit cold, but then we warmed up. This is a team effort. We practice hard to work as a team, and I’m happy to be part of this teamwork.”
Antonio Rizola Neto, Coach of Colombia: “The idea was always to reach the semifinal. We are making sacrifices with players who are not physically well, and with a setter because María Alejandra (Marín), our captain-setter, is not playing. Angie Melisa is standing out very well on her own with all the pressure on her, and it’s very difficult. I don’t have the option of taking her out of the court to preserve María Alejandra’s health. We’re not happy about not making it to the semifinal, but we must acknowledge that we played a 3-2 match very well and had the possibility of winning the game. I’m pleased with the commitment and fight of my team. Tomorrow we will continue fighting with the determination that characterizes our team.”
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 11, 2023.- Argentina advanced this Friday to the semifinals of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by defeating Canada 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 25- 12) at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.
Argentina had the opportunity to finish the match, 3-0, when in the third set they made a comeback to tie it at 20-20. Then, after another tie at 22-22, Canada was able to control to avoid the sweep. In the fourth set, Argentina made an eight-point rally (8-0) to put the score in their favor, 19-10; and from then on, Argentina did not look back until completing the mission: the semifinals.
Argentinian opposite Bianca Cugno was the best scorer of the match with 25 points (18 kills, 3 blocks, 4 aces); Paula Nizetich with 16 points (13 kills, 1 blocks, 2 aces); and Candelaria Herrera with 16 (10 kills, 6 blocks). For Canada, Andrea Mitrovic with 16 points (16 attacks); Hilary Howe with 16 points (14 attacks, 2 aces); and Shainah Joseph contributed 12 points on attacks.
Argentina and Canada finished tied in attacking points, with 56 each. Meanwhile, the South Americans dominated in blocks, 12-3, and in direct services, 13-4.
Argentina will play this Saturday in the semifinals and waits for its rival at the end of the day. Canada is also on hold for their 5-8 qualifying match.
Daniel Jorge Castellani, Coach of Argentina: “It was the best match played so far. We had been having good productions, but there was always a little more to go. And today, we did that little bit more. Despite the fact that we lost (the fourth set), the team remained calm and composed. I’m happy. Tomorrow in the semifinals we will try to do this, be aggressive and put pressure on our serve”.
Shannon Winzer, Coach of Canada: “I think when we could control first contact, we did a really good job of attacking. I think Argentina did a fantastic job of putting pressure on us from the baseline, and we really struggled to control some of their spin servers. And when you’re passing breakdown, you can’t really run much of an offense. So yeah, I it like again, I think it would have been easy for us to give up in the, you know, fourth set and we didn’t. So, I think, you know, we’re a young team. We have a lot of young players here and I think they’re learning lots right now”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 11, 2023.- Peru defeated Chile, 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-22, 25-16), and will play this Saturday for positions 5 to 8 in the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.
Although Chile fought to win the South American battle and was unsuccessful, they dominated Peru in aces, 6-4. In blocks they finished even, 9-9; and Peru dominated, 50-49, in attacks.
Ysabella Sánchez was the best scorer for Peru with 17 points (16 attacks, 1 ace); Daniela Muñoz with 13 points (11 atacks, 1 block, 1 ace), and Flavia Montes with 12 points (6, attacks, 6 blocks). For Chile, Beatriz Novoa led all scorers with 28 points (24 attacks, 2 blocks, 2 aces); Karen Morales with 11 points (10 attacks, 1 block); and Florencia Giglio with 10 points (5 attacks, 4 blocks, 1 ace).
Francisco Hervas Tirado, Coach of Peru: “The last two games were difficult losing them, 3-2, and fighting, today we saw a whole team showing that we can play well. I think that in the second set the physical part weighed on us; We lost some concentration and, in this sport, when you lose that rhythm, it’s hard. The positive thing is that we were capable in the third set and in the fourth set to pick it up again, and work in a very complicated situation because this tournament is very tough. Tomorrow we will continue playing great games and see how far we get”.
Alejandro Marín Hormazábal, Coach of Chile: “We came with a clear idea of, deep down, trying to beat Peru for the first time in the history in an official tournament, a team that has a lot of history. But we could not. We had a good second set, but we couldn’t hold it. Peru began to play more and made our game difficult. I’m sorry we couldn’t show our best volleyball. Tomorrow we will continue doing our job”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 11, 2023.- Mexico defeated Costa Rica, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-11), and will play this Saturday for positions 5 to 8 in the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup in the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.
Costa Rica played a good first set against Mexico. The Ticas dominated the second technical timeout, 16-15, and were tied at 20-20. Then, Mexico was in control of the rest of the match.
The Mexican outside hitter Aimé Margarita Topete was the best scorer of the match with 16 points (16 attacks); Karen Rivera contributed 12 points (10 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace); and captain Jocelyn Urias with 11 points (9 attacks, 2 blocks). For Costa Rica, Marcela Araya with 11 points (10 kills, 1 block); Tatiana Sayles with seven points (5 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace); and Yuliana González Alfaro with five points (5 attacks).
Mexico dominated Costa Rica in attacks for points, 45-27, and aces, 7-3. In blocks, Costa Rica dominated by the minimum, 5-4.
Costa Rica will play on Saturday at 12:00 noon for positions 9 and 10, and Mexico for classifications 5 to 8. Mexico’s opponent will be known after the results of the sixth day of the Cup.
Pablo Acuña, Coach of Costa Rica: “The girls were in a good mental state today, but we fell again in the middle of the set; and we can’t keep competing. Today it weighed heavily on us at reception. Mexico played a good game of aggressive and tactical service that affected us, and it is something that needs to be improved. For tomorrow we hope to be able to compete and seek to be in the best possible position in the tournament”.
Nicola Negro, Coach of Mexico: “Today we started the game with a bit slow pace and with some technical problems. Later, we managed to adjust and in the final part of the game it was a good presentation for us. Tomorrow is the game to enter the first eight teams and we are going to look for the best possible position”.

The serving pressure was good, our passing was phenomenal; when our passing is good, everything else is good, and it’s all about producing blocks. I feel that tomorrow, if we maintain our passing at a high level, we can defeat Nicaragua in three sets. We just need to come out with fast play and not start slow, apply pressure from the beginning, and finish it that way”.
Richard Smith, Outside Hitter of Costa Rica: “Happy to be in Belize, unfortunately, it wasn’t our tournament. Today’s match was exciting, a face-off, with a Belizean team that has been improving for a while. They have renewed many players and have been dedicated to preparing the players. They have players in foreign university leagues, and right now, they are showing results. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the capacity to rise. The whole week has been a roller coaster for the team, especially emotionally. Also, I think we lacked a little more preparation to get here. We congratulate Belize, who gave us a lesson on the work they’ve been doing at the Central American level”.

We characterize ourselves as athletes as a whole, and I will continue supporting them, fighting every match”.

It was a quite intense duel for us since we have quite a few rookies in the team. Even in this case, we put up a good fight. Lisvel (Eve Mejía) was able to play practically three sets, we released our libero, and it was a hard-fought match. Puerto Rico played an excellent game. I think that this match is useful for the rest of the tournament because it gives them more confidence. They played a tremendous game today. We achieved the objective and now to continue working. We will rest after the tournament.”
Geraldine González, Middle Blocker of Dominican Republic: “The coach told us that we had the responsibility to win for the country and thank God we achieved our goal. We had a responsibility to beat Puerto Rico and we did it.”
Fernando Morales, Coach of Puerto Rico: “We did what we had to do. The Dominican Republic is a great team that makes the play. They made great plays at the end and took the game. That’s what good teams do. We battled hard and played the best match of the tournament so far. Simone Lee, Best scorer of United States: “It’s really exciting. This is like a new group of girls that we’re playing with right now. And I think we’ve just worked so hard to play together as a team and to beat Canada 3-0 was always really nice and to secure our spot in the semifinals on this awesome tournament it’s even better”.
Shannon Winzer, Coach of Canada: “I think it was a, you know, as much as we lost in three, I thought we played better volleyball than we have been playing and we’re still struggling to block balls and I think against a team like the USA who attacked so well, and we need to be able to put up a better block than we did tonight. But some good things, some good service pressure in key moments. And I thought our attackers did a, you know, on the pins, did a really good job than what we’ve seen. So yeah, yeah, it’s fine. We knew that you know regardless of the outcome of this game we were going to finish second or third, so we really want to rest some players as well, but our expectation is still to get into a gold medal game”.

Alejandro Marín Hormazábal, Coach of Chile: “We were dissatisfied because it was a game that we thought we could win, but we couldn’t. We never found the game unlike the previous games, which we played better. As the days go by, the tiredness appears. By not winning any match, the girls are resenting. It is not easy, but we continue with our heads held high”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 10, 2023.- Colombia recovered after losing the first two sets and won the next three to close the group stage with a victory, 3-2 (18-25, 21-25, 25 -20, 25-17, 15-10), against Peru in the fifth day of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.

Antonio Rizola Nieto, Coach of Colombia: “The attitude of the first two sets was not good, we must play more aggressive with Peru and much more focused. When we took the right attitude, we had the result. Peru is a team that plays seriously, and we played unfocused in the first two sets, then we led the game. The second round will be very difficult. We await to meet our opponent and prepare all night.”
Dayana Segovia, Best Scorer of Colombia: “We changed our attitude and things began to work out. We entered the court very calmly and we didn’t fight for the balls. When we changed our attitude, we made things happen for us. This victory is very important for us because it puts us in a good position for the second round. We are happy because Peru is a team with which we play a lot, and they know us well. We knew it would be difficult but, thank God, we were able to get the victory”.
Francisco Hervas Tirado, Coach of Peru: “We were playing very well but these things happen in volleyball. There are moments when we have gotten stuck in a rotation, and we have given them the advantage. From there, we have lost the intensity that we had up to now; and that’s what we needed to beat a team like Colombia. But I’m happy with the team’s effort and we must keep working because there’s still a long tournament left”.

We were coming off a loss against Costa Rica, but that didn’t affect us because we knew we could fight for the championship. Costa Rica’s loss today gives us even more possibilities, and the closest rival was Belize, so we had to win for the ultimate goal”.
Ernest Broaster, Outside hitter of Belize: “This was a shaky night. We faltered in passing, and the attack wasn’t working for us; our service also failed us. We didn’t reach our goal, which is the gold medal, but we’re still in contention for the silver medal; we can win it, but we just need to win the next two matches”.

Bethania de la Cruz, Top scorer of the Dominican Republic: “It was a tough day due to the uncertainty of when we would play, but we managed to maintain focus, and that’s important when things like this happen. Winning in three sets was important due to the time we’ll have to rest.”

Chile ends the preliminary round tomorrow against Mexico at 4:00 p.m.
Daniel Jorge Castellani, Coach of Argentina: “It was important to win from three points, but besides that, we played well. I think it was the most regular game we had where we had almost no bumps. It was a positive (preliminary) round. It is a new process because I have been with the team for three months, we work a lot, we have trained; and now you have to compete. We need this to confirm and continue working.”
Paula Nizetich, Player of Argentina: “We knew it was an important match for us to continue with the qualifying plans, and we entered with that strong mentality from the beginning. We know what we have to do and luckily it came out. Argentina is a battle-hardened team that likes that type of game, and it turned out well. I am content and happy. It was a round of ups and downs, it’s a young team and it’s the first time we’ve started playing with the new coach. Now we have to continue.”
Alejandro Marín Hormazabal, Coach of Chile: “Today we are playing with a team that is coming from the Olympic Games and with a good level. From what we proposed, we were very clear and concise about that, which was to serve very hard so that they couldn’t play with their middles and we could play a little more comfortable in blocking. It was fulfilled at times, but we still need more experience, play more, and little by little we are going to achieve the level that we want. We are happy with the dedication that each player has”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 9, 2023.- Colombia achieved its second victory at the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by defeating Costa Rica, 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-9), on the fourth day of competition at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.
The Colombian players gave the victory to their Brazilian coach Antonio Rizola Neto, who is celebrating his birthday.

Dayana Segovia was the best scorer for the Colombian squad with 14 points (11 attacks, 2 blocks, 1 ace); Laura Grajales contributed 11 points (8 attacks, 1 block and 2 direct services); and Ana Karina Olaya with 10 points (5 attacks, 4 blocks, one ace). For Costa Rica, Marcela Araya with eight points (8 attacks); Tannia Carazo, five points (5 attacks); and Yuliana González Alfaro with two points (2 attacks).
Costa Rica (0-4) closed the preliminary round without victories, and Colombia will play tomorrow against Peru at 2:00 p.m.
Antonio Rizola Neto, Coach of Colombia: “A great birthday present for the seriousness with which the team played today. Costa Rica is a team that is growing and that presented high-quality volleyball, but the human material cannot be changed. They play well, but they are limited in physical condition and my team respected them. We play serious all the time. A score like this represents that we respect the adversary. All the players came on court today, they played, and they presented themselves well. I like this a lot.”
Dayana Segovia, Colombia’s Best Scorer: “This victory is very important for us because it is a difficult game like all the ones we have. We have to add victories to arrive at a good level and in a good position for the rest of the tournament. We have to prepare to close the group stage, then come the quarterfinals which are very important for us, to be on the podium”.
Pablo Acuña, Coach of Costa Rica: “Today we knew it would be a difficult game because Colombia is physically superior to us in height and strength. We didn’t want Colombia to have too many one-on-ones; and we work the blocking well. We read very well the priorities of the setter and that process was what interested us today. The truth is that we are in a very difficult group, and we respect our opponents, but the team’s focus is to continue improving and analyzing what we can improve to be prepared for our Central American Cup well”.

Winning against Argentina, 3-1, is important to achieve our goal in this Cup”.
Daniel Jorge Castellani: Coach of Argentina: “I saw the team better because we were very angry about yesterday’s game (against Puerto Rico). The girls responded very well to that and we started very well. I think we made mistakes that we shouldn’t have made to win the first set, which was quite controlled, and take it to 3-2. Today we rotated, other girls played and we played very well. There are positive things for the team”.

We are happy to be able to win this game.”
Daniel Jorge Castellani, Coach of Argentina: “It’s a bitter result because I think we could have played a little better. It wasn’t a good game for us but, nevertheless, what I rescue is what we fought for, we looked for solutions, options, and despite not having a great game, we were able to stay in the game and be competitive. At the end of the fifth set, the team fell off a bit.”
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 7, 2023.- Dominican Republic, champion of the last two editions (2021/2022) of the Women Senior Pan American Cup, debuted with a 3-0 (25-23, 25 -15, 25-15) against Chile at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.
The champions started their tournament debut a bit cold with a close first set against Chile, but then they showed their power on court to win in three sets.
The Dominicans dominated the Chileans in attacks, 43-23; in blocks they were even, 9-9, and in direct services, 5-5, as well.
Gaila González was the best scorer for the Dominican Republic with 14 points (12 kills, one block, one ace); Madeline Guillén with nine attacking points and Cándida Arias with seven points (5 kills, 2 blocks).
For Chile, Beatriz Novoa scored 14 points (12 kills, 2 blocks), followed by Karen Morales with eight points (5 kills, 3 blocks) and Florencia Giglio with six points (2 kills, 2 blocks, 2 direct serves).
Dominican Republic will play tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. against Argentina, and Chile has the day off.
Marcos Kwiek, Coach of the Dominican Republic: “It’s always a little difficult for us to start because of the pace of the game, the change of play, but it’s normal and we’re used to it. We didn’t play the first day and that’s part of the competition. Today I had the opportunity to practically put them all to play. Bethania (De la Cruz) is playing for the first time this year and we have to get her into the rhythm of the game, because physically she is fine, and these games are good for that, so we have one more option”.
Niverka Marte, Captain of the Dominican Republic: “Happy that all the girls had the opportunity to play because it is important for our development. We come from a very good transition, and these are games that the girls have to enter and show that there is talent. We come to look for the gold medal, God willing, and for the team to maintain its level in each game”.
Alejandro Marín Hormazábal, Coach of Chile: “We played a very good first set. We played equally. Dominican Republic is a very tough team when it comes to attacking, blocking up front, but we played very well from serves, which was one of the virtues we had. Unfortunately, even though we played good volleyball at times, we couldn’t keep it up. For this reason, we couldn’t stay with a win or a set, but I’m happy with the performance of the players”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 7, 2023.- Peru lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-13) to the United States in the second day of the XX Women Senior Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.
The United States is undefeated at 2-0 in Pool A with six straight sets.
With 12 blocks for points, the North American team dominated Peru, which had three. Likewise, the United States dominated in attacks, 40-37, and in serves they finished even, 4-4.
Logan Eggleston was the top scorer for the United States with 15 points (14 attacks, one block), Stephanie Samedy with 13 points (11 attacks, one block, one ace) and Madeleine Gates with 11 points (6 attacks, 5 blocks).

Peru (0-1) will play tomorrow against Costa Rica (0-2) at 2:00 p.m., and the United States (2-0) against Colombia (1-0) at 4:00 p.m.
Brad Rostratter, Coach of United States: “It was great. We’ve gotten to get everyone in and everyone kind of get the first match jitters out of the way, and it was nice to see us put some things together through those last two sets, through the home stretch. It’s just the next step and we just have been preparing on what’s ahead of us and what’s in front of us and we played better today and we’re trying to play better tomorrow against Colombia”.
Logan Eggleston, Best scorer of United States: “It was a fun game to play. I think we’re getting used to each other as a team with a lot of really awesome talent. And we’re just having fun getting to play together. Our expectation is always to win, and we just played at a really high level and I think we’re doing a really good job at the beginning and it’s going to keep getting better”.
Francisco Manuel Hervas Tirado, Coach of Peru: “I think that the first two sets we have endured very well and we have had our options, doing little things that we have been working on and we have been satisfied there, although we have lost the third. The third, we haven’t been able to find the rhythm of the game again and a team like the United States, you pay for that, you pay for it on the scoreboard. We always talk with the girls that the first game is always difficult regardless of the rival because it’s normal. We must continue working and keep thinking about the game that comes tomorrow”.
PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 7, 2023.- Canada achieved its first victory of the XX Women Senior Pan American Cup by beating Costa Rica 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-15) on Monday at the Juan “Pachín “Vicéns Auditorium de Ponce.
After losing the first set, Costa Rica made adjustments and took an early lead in the next two sets but were unable to hold it and Canada took the win.
Canada (1-1) dominated Costa Rica (0-2) in spikes, 41-22, in blocks, 8-3, and in serves, 8-3.
Vicky Savard, from Canada, was the best scorer of the match with 16 points (13 kills, 2 blocks, one ace); Nyadholi Thokbuorn with 13 points (7 kills, 3 blocks, 3 aces); and Sydney Grills with 11 points (8 kills, 3 aces).

Costa Rica will play tomorrow against Peru at 2:00 p.m. and Canada has the day off.
Shannon Winzer, Coach of Canada: “I think we started off a lot better this game than we did the previous game. We managed first contact a lot better, which allowed us to run our offense and I thought we had a few players who had just outstanding service pressure that made it difficult for Costa Rica to control that first pass. So, I think we did some good things. We gave a lot of players a run tonight. And that only, you know, serves us well for the rest of the tournament”.
Nyadholi Thokbuom, Middle Blocker of Canada: “We’re really excited. This is the first time this group has played together, so we’re really hyped up. We’re very happy. I knew I was falling short in other parts of my game so the service line was the only thing that I could control, and I think I did pretty well on that”.
Pablo Acuña, Coach of Costa Rica: “The last two sets we had an advantage, and it went away. The second (set) in rotation four, and the third (set), in rotation three. I think it was Canada’s virtue that they served it very well, and we think we could have made an adjustment in reception earlier to press and win a set that would have changed the match. I like the team up to point 16, after that something happens mentally that is affecting us, and we can’t close the set. But, we are here for that, to see what is happening to correct and make the changes”.
BELIZE CITY, Belize, August 7, 2023.- Once again, the hosts made use of their home advantage and didn’t allow themselves to fall easily in front of their fans, rallying back from a 0-2 set deficit and extending the last match to a fifth set on the second day of the XXII AFECAVOL Central American Men’s Volleyball Cup.

Otto Othon, Captain of Panama: “In tonight’s game, we played well in the first two sets. We have many young players, and it was an experience for them and for us, and the match went to five sets. We need to correct what couldn’t be achieved and hope to play a good match against El Salvador tomorrow”.
BELIZE CITY, Belize, August 7, 2023. – The current Central American champions, Guatemala, made their debut with a 3-2 victory (22/25, 25/19, 18/25, 25/20, 15/9) over El Salvador in the XXII AFECAVOL Central American Men’s Volleyball Cup.

Juan Carlos Vargas, Captain of El Salvador: “We didn’t secure the victory, but we put up a fight. A quite extended 3-2 match, a lot of passion on the court because we were playing against the reigning Central American champions of the past years, and that always motivates us to play well and better. We had a player injured in the fourth set, which made it difficult for us to close the fourth and fifth sets properly. Our spirits are high, there are still four games to go, and we’re looking forward to giving our best performance tomorrow with the goal of winning”.

We are very happy and with the intact goal of winning the tournament. Tomorrow, we have a day off, and on Wednesday, we will defeat Guatemala”.
Miguel Castillo, Captain of Nicaragua: “Today’s game got away from us because we are inconsistent in reception. We knew we were up against a tough opponent, and unfortunately, we couldn’t close the fourth set to go into a fifth. The tournament is just starting, and we will continue to give our all to finish with a medal”.

We have players playing out of position, not their natural position. We played an orderly game. We lacked attack. Now we rest to prepare for Puerto Rico on Tuesday.”
Daniel Jorge Castellani, Coach of Argentina: “Very happy with the victory. There was a bit of nerves at the start of the game, like every first game in a competition, and then we saw the work they did. I really liked the offense. There was a lot of offense.”
Victoria Mayer, Captain of Argentina: “It was a great victory against Mexico. We are a team of young players with others who have more experience. We are very happy to start this Cup with a victory”.

We knew we had to give our best, and it was reflected in the scores. We had to go to the fifth set, but in the end, we steered the ship right. We worked on our serves, which we were struggling with, and thanks to God, we managed to secure the game in our favor”.
Albert Humes, Belize’s coach: “The defeat tonight was very disappointing. I believe that both the players and the coaches made mistakes at some point in the game, and El Salvador capitalized on those mistakes. El Salvador did their homework studying us; they didn’t use power but played intelligent volleyball, and that cost us the match”.

Marco Sugiyama, Honduras’ coach: “We started the game a bit poorly, slow. We need to accelerate our process for the next match. I’ll be talking to the players, and I hope to bring about a change for the next game”.
BELIZE CITY, Belize, August 6, 2023.- The Panama Men’s Volleyball Team made a triumphant debut with a 3-1 victory over Costa Rica (25-17/25-20/22-25/25-15) at the XXII AFECAVOL Central American Men’s Volleyball Cup.
In the first match of the day and the tournament at the Belize City Civic Center, Panama displayed determination to secure the win. They clinched the first set with an eight-point lead (25-17).

On Monday, August 7, Panama will face Belize at 7:30 PM, while Costa Rica will compete against Nicaragua at 2:30 PM.
Horacio Angulo, Panama’s coach: “We had two sets heavily in our favor that we were able to secure. Costa Rica is a challenging team, especially with coaches who understand volleyball and have worked a lot on their float serves, which somewhat gave difficulties to my team’s reception. We managed to take the third set, and in the fourth set, I made a couple of adjustments, subbing out one player and bringing in a young 19-year-old, Gherson Ortíz, who is a rising star in volleyball. The team played well with the system we’ve practiced in Panama, and thank God, we secured the victory”.
Johan Morales, Costa Rica’s coach: “We knew it wouldn’t be an easy match. Panama inflicted a lot of damage with their serves; we couldn’t control them. When we did manage to control them, we ended up one-on-one, but our attackers couldn’t close. These are things we need to change; in such a fast tournament, we can’t afford to stay down or give up. We know our purpose here, and we still have five matches to make certain changes to achieve it. I brought mobility to the team with significant changes, but in the end, it didn’t work out. We made too many unforced errors, and our defensive tactics were lacking. We weren’t at our best, so now we need to regroup and come to play against Nicaragua, another tough opponent”.

Brad Rostratter, Coach of United States of America: “It’s good to start off the tournament that way and to have our team come in and play well. And we definitely had some jitters and started the first set, so it was nice to get settled. We really were just focused on ourselves and how we’re playing and us. In continuity together. And that’s our focus throughout. Tomorrow, we got Peru. So we gotta watch some video prepare, watch ourselves and and upgrade some things”.
Sarah Wilhite Parsons, Captain of United States of America: “I think overall it was a great win. Costa Rica brings a lot of different things at us and I think we did a good job of managing it and just staying together as a team. But it was my first time playing against Costa Rica and I think that they challenged us in a lot of ways and it was a fun match”.
Pablo Acuña, Coach of Costa Rica: “Pablo Acuña, Coach of Costa Rica: “We had no information about this team playing together. We knew of some individuals. It was a difficult start. We were adapting set by set, getting to know the opponent a little more. We told the players that focus was what we could control. Set by set we gave more competition to the United States. We took a step forward, but there is still a lot to improve.”
PONCE, Puerto Rico (August 5, 2023).- The coaches of the National Teams agreed that participating in the XX Women Volleyball Pan American Cup is very important for the pending competitions for the rest of the year.
The tournament will grant two spaces for the NORCECA teams to the XIX Pan American Games in Santiago 2023, that will take place from October 20 to November 5. Without Cuba and Suriname, the teams were divided into two groups, in Group A are Canada, Colombia, Peru, the United States and Costa Rica. In Group B will play Argentina, Chile, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
The first place of each group will advance directly to the semifinals.
Nicola Negro, Coach of Mexico: “We came to this competition with a small team. It is a very articulated competition, with many games, and that will help us to have a better result”.
Francisco Manuel Hervas, coach of Peru: It’s a very beneficial tournament for us because it’s the first tournament we’ve played this year with the Senior team, and it puts us at the gates of the South American Championship (August) and the Olympic qualifiers (September). This tournament is very important for us to see how the team is facing these two official FIVB tournaments with great weight in our planning.
Alejandro Marín Hormazábal, Coach of Chile: “It is very important to be here after 2017, which was our last participation in this competition. Today we are lucky to compete with world-class teams, with teams that come from the Olympic Games and VNL. They are world-class teams and it will help us a lot to prepare for the 2023 Pan American Games”.
Marcos Kwiek, Coach of the Dominican Republic: “It is an important competition for us because it is prior to the Continental Championship and the Olympic qualifier. This tournament contributes a lot to gain game rhythm and experience; and it is a good opportunity for other players to enter the court and gain that experience, which we are going to need. We are 100% focused. All games are important. We have to win”.
Antonio Rizola Neto, Coach of Colombia: “It is a tournament that we respect a lot and we are careful to present ourselves well. Last year we finished in third position, and we hope to improve on that ranking. This is the last tournament before the South American Championship, and it is followed by the Olympic qualification. They are two very important competitions and I come to seek experience for my team, which is very different from last year”.
Fernando Morales, Coach of Puerto Rico: “Our goal is to qualify for the Pan American Games. We know we are at home and we want to give our people a good show. We come from two good tournaments (Final Four and Central American and Caribbean Games), and we know that this tournament is of a higher level and we want to expose our players at this level, and that they continue to have good results. We want to start the second cycle of the year on the right foot”.
Pablo Acuña, Coach of Costa Rica: “Being here is very important for us because in a month we will be in the Central American Cup, which is our main competition and our goal is to win first place. The Pan American Cup allows us to concentrate the team and prepare with high-level rivals. The players are very excited to be able to compete. We hope to improve game by game”.
Shannon Winzer, Coach of Canada: “I think this is a really good opportunity for, you know, some of our senior A team to who maybe didn’t play as much at VNL. And for some of our younger players who are trying to push into the senior A team, we’ve got a really important end of summer with NORCECA Championships being hosted in Canada and with Olympic qualifiers in China. So this is very much a part of our preparation. We’ve come with the what I think is a really strong team and we’re we’re 100% trying to win this competition. Anytime you play in your region, you wanna do a good job”.
Daniel Jorge Castellani, Coach of Argentina: “It is a very important tournament for us. We played some friendly matches in Argentina before arriving. This tournament has a higher level, and, in the programming, it is a tournament that will give us competition and feedback, to continue growing for the South American Championship and Olympic qualifiers. We never have expectations. We always go out to play 100%, to give our best, and to be prepared for whatever arises on the field of play”.
Brad Rostratter, Coach of USA: “We have a really exciting team. We have a mixture of girls who have played a lot with the USA jersey and logo on the jersey and we also have some girls will be their first time wearing the jersey and representing our country, and some of them are fresh and out of college and some of them have been playing pro for a few years and have been able to get an opportunity to represent our country. So, it’s a really exciting mix of young and experienced athletes. Our expectation is to really grow throughout this next month that we’re together. We’ve had two weeks of training and now we’ll be on the road for a month with this tournament here and then the Final Six afterwards. So, the expectation for us is just keep going. Getting better and obviously compete for every single point in every single match and see where that gets us”.
