PEPS’ Amphithéatre Desjardins-Université Laval.

Marcos Kwiek, head coach of Dominican Republic:  “It was a very difficult match. We knew we needed this victory to reach the final and secure a medal. We studied Canada extensively, the girls gave their all, and I’m happy with the work they did. I congratulate Canada for the great match. Matches against Canada are always highly competitive. We trained hard, and the girls knew what they had to do; sometimes, under the pressure of the game, a player might stray, but the instruction was for them to stick to the game plan. Now, it’s time to focus on the United States.”

Shannon Winzer, head coach of Canada: “It wasn’t the result we wanted, but I actually thought we played pretty good volleyball. I thought at no stage did we give up. Everyone who came on court did really well and I thought we battled. It’s hard to lose a game like that knowing we played pretty good volleyball, but Dominican has been playing great volleyball. They were the team that came up on top tonight. We want that bronze; our goal has been top three and we would have like to be in that gold-medal match, but we’ll take a bronze. Cuba has been playing well, so we have to re-group and re-focus”.

Grenada males and Dominica females take top seed at ECVA U19 Beach Volleyball Day 1

Basseterre, St. Kitts September, 2nd – When the sand settled at the Marriot Beach on the Atlantic side of St. Kitts, it was Grenada males and Dominica females who took the pole positions in the male and female categories respectively at the end of day 1 in pool play.

In the male category, it was the Grenada team that surprised everyone with their dominance over their opponents. They were unbeaten winning by huge margins over BVI (21 -3 and 21 – 5) and comfortable margins (21- 12 and 21- 12 )over Bermuda.

St. Lucia too were unbeaten when they played their games against St. Kitts and Nevis and Antigua Barbuda. The St. Kitts and Nevis opponents challenged for a while could not extend the fight losing 21 -12 and 21 -15.

However, Antigua and Barbuda made them sweat for almost every point but eventually, St. Lucia persevered winning 21-18 and 21 -16. It was this point ratio that gave Grenada the edge over St. Lucia.

Attaining the number 1 seed after being in this type of competition for the first time made Coach Deannedre John very pleased. “I am very proud of my boys as I think they listened and executed what I was trying to impart. I know it might get tougher as we go along but regardless of the outcome they have already made me proud”. She said.

In the female category, it was Dominica that eclipsed the 7 other teams for the top spot. They won comfortably against BVI (21-15 and  21-6)

Added to that,  they pipped archrival St. Lucia 2-1 after losing the first set (13-21, 21-15, and 15-6).

“We did well, very well, I was satisfied that the girls kept their composure and executed when it was necessary”.  Coach Joseph Florent said.

Matches continue on Sunday 3rd September including quarter-finals, semis, and finals in both categories to determine the eventual winners

St. Kitts and Nevis Welcomes ECVA U19 Beach Volleyball Tournament

Basseterre, St. Kitts September, 2nd – Everyone lauded the idea of having a male and female competition in this age category with the long-time objective of having the best ECVA team compete in the World Youth Games in 2025.

Nine male teams and eight female teams will compete with each other and the eventual winner in the long run will get the opportunity to compete as an ECVA entity in the NORCECA segment of the World Youth games (U21) in 2025.

Consequently, there was a common theme among all the coaches. It is mainly about development but winning was a secondary objective.

Coach Alli Settle of Bermuda was excited about the proposal being played out. “This is definitely about development for us as we have brought some new girls and boys to this competition, but of course, along the way, we hope to win some games.” She said.

Jason Liburd coach of the Anguilla team said that it was a great idea. “The introduction of this competition aligned itself with the goals and objectives for volleyball in Anguilla as we too try to grow the sport. Also, it comes at a time when we are preparing for an indoor competition in October. Hence it is all about the transferring of skills from the hard court to the sands”. He intimated

Rick Swann, the head coach of the beach volleyball teams in St. Kitts and Nevis had this to say. “Every time one enters a competition one wants to win but for these boys, it is an opportunity to grow and learn each time they step onto a court”. He said

The view of first-time Deanne John of Grenada was an assessment of progress while in competition. “I believe in exposure, I think it is a good initiative and a chance for us to learn and grow and improve next time around. It will be their first time in a competition like this hence there will be no pressure just to do their best”. She concluded.

Olsen Joseph o Antigua and Barbuda was focused both on the long term and the present. “We are hoping to do well but this is also a pilot project so we are looking to see where we are so we can chart a development course. I think it a great idea as by the time we get to the U 21 level we can compete”. He said.

“We are cautiously optimistic in a competition of this nature. This is a combination of both wanting to win as well as development. We have just one experienced person on each team and so the focus is also building”. Said  Sheldon Nicholas of St. Lucia.

Coach Arnel Horn of St. Vincent and the Grenadines was excited over the prospect of playing in this tournament. This is definitely about development but we want to win a few games along the way.  This is an ideal opportunity for them to learn as it is their first time and so they are all ecstatic” He Stated.

Coach of the Dominica team Yan Joseph Florent’s eyes lit up when he was asked for his opinion. “It’s not just a good idea it’s a great idea as it gives us a chance to learn and grow. Both teams are new to the sand and it’s now an opportunity for them to apply what they learned. He noted.

Matches in both males and females begin simultaneously on September 2nd at 9 a.m. on the sands of the Atlantic Beach now known as the Marriott Beach. There, the nervousness will dissipate and competition will be in full swing.

Osmani García, head coach of Cuba: “We were aware that today’s match was going to be uphill because the United States is one of the top four best teams in the world. Nevertheless, as a coach I am glad because we executed things on court that we hadn’t accomplished in other matches, such as combinations and aggressiveness. There were rallies in which we put up with the pressure but obviously the United States is a great team. We will keep on focusing on improving our team for what’s left in the tournament and the rest of the year.”

Match action Mexico against Puerto Rico

Nicola Negro, head coach of Mexico: “Yesterday (after the loss to Puerto Rico in five sets) I said we have a second chance.  You don’t always get a second chance…  Today, in the second and third sets we came back from gaps, and this is a good sign. Fifth place in NORCECA is a start for us; we are working with a new generation of players. It’s a long path and now we have the Olympic qualifier in front of us, which will be a great experience for these players. Some rest, and then we will focus on that.”

Ivonne Martinez, Mexico player (setter): “We knew that it was going to be a hard game and that we couldn’t relax at any moment. I think we were very disciplined in some aspects, such as defense. We served really well. We study them a lot, so when we were down we played ball by ball and we stayed calm. We had a lot of attitude and a good spirit during this match.”

Fernando Morales, head coach of Puerto Rico, “I think it was a good match overall, Mexico just closed the sets better than us. I think we played better than yesterday. We are missing some of our key players, and we’re learning to play without them and it’s been hard. We have another chance tomorrow to close the tournament with a win (for sixth place against Costa Rica).”

Nicola Negro, head coach of Mexico: “Definitely a tough match for us, we know the potential of the attack of the Dominican team, but today they did a great job also in block and defense. The entered the court so aggressive against us. We could play with them in the first set, but from the second set they really made it hard for us. We know that we have some distance with this type of team and we have to work to reduce this gap. But for us, now we focus on tomorrow and we have a chance to finish fifth. We play against Puerto Rico and of course we are still not happy about the way the match turned out yesterday and now we have a second chance against them tomorrow.”

Cuba blocking Puerto Rico

Fernando Morales, head coach of Puerto Rico, “We never found the rhythm of our game and I think that’s been the story of the whole tournament. We have a young group that’s played a lot of tournaments, I think this is our fifth this year, and it’s no excuse but they are showing signs of fatigue. We have to find a way to manage it better so we can be better for the last two games, and we’re going to try to come back stronger tomorrow.”

Osmani García, head coach of Cuba: “Today, we are very pleased with the team because despite the injuries and all the complications we have experienced since coming from the Dominican Republic, we talked to the players and did a tactical job that worked perfectly. The team’s fighting spirit continues to grow. The team is coming together like a family in volleyball. We are very happy. We gave the due respect to Puerto Rico, which has a high level, they play very good volleyball, but today things went in our favor.”

USA advances to semis after win over Dominican Republic

Team USA celebrates a point against Team Dominican Republic

Karch Kiraly, head coach of USA: “Dominican is a really good team and a very dangerous team that eliminated Serbia from this year’s VNL; that beat China, the silver medalist in VNL. We love it when we get a chance to play a really good team across the net. They started pushing us right out of the gate; we were not clean at all (in the first set). The good news was that we got better as we went along.”

Marcos Kwiek, head coach of Dominican Republic: “I think we played two very good sets, at a high level, we started well, point by point. We dropped our intensity in the third set. The United States is a team that’s very tough to face if you stop serving well because they play very fast. We had some good moments, and we need to take advantage of these matches at this level, these opportunities are good for our team’s growth. Now, we need to prepare well to face Mexico in the quarterfinals, we’ll study them, train for it tomorrow, and be ready.”

Puerto Rico takes Mexico down in five sets

QUEBEC CITY, CANADA. August 31, 2023: The 2023 NORCECA Senior Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship saw its first five-set match today, with Puerto Rico beating Mexico 3-2 (27-25, 17-25, 14-25, 25-23, 15-11).

The first set was a back-and-forth battle, but Mexico handily won the next two. Puerto Rico adjusted its strategy to come back and win the fourth set and tie-break.

Despite the loss, Mexico had the edge in attack points (65-61), blocks (15-12), aces (6-2) and the teams were equal in errors at 23.

Mexico’s Grecia Castro López led scoring with 23 points; while Puerto Rico’s Paola Santiago was the winning teams top scorer with 20.

Puerto Rico will face Cuba in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

The tournament runs through to September 3 at the PEPS’ Amphithéatre Desjardins-Université Laval, Quebec.

Team Puerto Rico celebrates their victory against Team Mexico

Fernando Morales, head coach of Puerto Rico: “Puerto Rico against Mexico is always a really hard match and almost always five sets. They came out strong and we didn’t… the first set made it possible to go to five…. We adjusted our block, which was all over the place in the first three sets and then we adjusted – we blocked a lot of balls and it gave us a chance to dig a lot of balls in transition. … We are happy as we wanted to finish second and get a better match-up in the quarterfinals.”

Nicola Negro, head coach of Mexico: “It was a game that I think honestly we could have closed 3-0. We managed the end of the first set really badly; and then won two sets at 17 and 14, so we could have put a big difference between us and Puerto Rico. But then when you let them come back, this is a team that knows how to play. The fourth set was point by point, and the tie-break we were already in a difficult position. This was a big chance for us to play Cuba tomorrow (in the quarterfinals) and to think that we could say something in this competition. But I know we have to work a lot – first of all on our mentality before the technical part of the game.”

Cuba earns its first win at the Continental Championship

QUEBEC CITY, CANADA. August 31, 2023: Cuba swept a young Costa Rican squad 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-9) as Group B pool play continued Thursday afternoon at the 2023 NORCECA Senior Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship in Quebec, which runs from August 29 to September 3 at the PEPS’ Amphithéatre Desjardins-Université Laval.

Cuban Ivy Vila Wittingham led all scoring with 14 (10 attacking points, 2 blocks and 2 aces).

Cuba advances to the tournament quarter finals, which are held on Friday.

Cuba celebrates against Costa Rica

Regla Torres, assistant coach of Cuba: “The team looked a bit better both in blocking and serving, but we would have liked to see what we saw today in the previous matches. The United States and the Dominican Republic are higher-level teams, and it seems to me that our team was under pressure. Hopefully, this is a step forward for the upcoming games.”

Jose Miguel Brinceño, coach of Costa Rica: “We are happy with the first set against Cuba, we knew we could have a better performance than we did against the United States and the Dominican Republic, however, we didn’t maintain the same level of attack and confidence during the second and third sets. We made some changes, aiming for a better block in position two, but we are lacking in blocking our opponents. Our serving was good, we targeted the sidelines and avoided serving to the libero. Cuba’s attacking power was greater than ours.”

Canada sweeps Puerto Rico to clinch spot in semifinals

Quebec City, CANADA. August 30, 2023: Canada won their second-straight match of the 2023 NORCECA Senior Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship in Quebec City, earning a bye to the semifinals on September 2.

Despite a hard push from Puerto Rico in the third and ultimately final set, the Canadians took the match 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-23), marking their second sweep in as many games. With the win, Canada clinched first place in Group A, allowing them to move past the quarterfinals and into the top-four. They’ll now see how the results play out over the next two days of the tournament before finding out who they’ll face in the semifinals.

Captain Alexa Gray led scoring with 12, followed closely by Emily Maglio and Kiera Van Ryk with 11.

Canada led in both attacks (35-29) and block points (14-6), while Puerto Rico had one more ace than Canada 2-1.

On the Puerto Rican roster, it was Neira Ortiz, Elaine Vazquez Rivera, Pilar Marie Victoria, who carried the team in points with eight apiece.

Canada celebrates victory against Puerto Rico

Fernando Morales, head coach of Puerto Rico: “I think we played a great match. We know they’re a great team and they played a great match, so when they play at that level it’s hard. We didn’t play our best match either. We came back in that third set and that was important for us. Knowing how important tomorrow’s game is for us, ending on that note is very important. We’re going to go study the game, study Mexico, and we know that our chances to be in the top four – that was our main goal – it’s 90 percent of winning tomorrow so we have a better quarterfinal crossover sitting in second than third.”

“We were trying to get back to 100 percent, we had two players out sick and one injured so we’re trying to move them around and see what works best for us. Hopefully by tomorrow we get a good rhythm and can finish the tournament on a good note. Tomorrow is the most important match of the tournament for us. If we win tomorrow, then we get a good rhythm going into the quarterfinals and then to that top four.”

Shannon Winzer, head coach of Canada: “I thought we played good volleyball tonight, we were pretty clean. I thought Brie (King) did a great job of running the offense. What we saw was Puerto Rico really show up and battle towards the end. They played amazing defense and it made for an exciting finish. I thought we executed the game plan well and we played good volleyball.”

“I think we’ll probably take one day off and then get back to practice. We’re going to have a really strong opponent on Saturday, so making sure that we’re well rested but also that we’re really sharp and prepared for that game. I think it’s no different then when we’re playing VNL when we get that day or two off.”

Dominican Republic attacks against Costa Rica

Marcos Kwiek, head coach of Dominican Republic: “Now we must prepare for tomorrow’s match, to close pool-play, and to determine the first place in the pool. It’s a very important and challenging game. We have faced the United States many times, the matches are very close, but they have star players in their team. Today was a good game to give rest to key players who are important and need to be more rested for tomorrow. Now we are going to study videos and try to do our best for a good match tomorrow.”

Jose Miguel Brinceno, coach of Costa Rica: “I consider that today against the Dominican Republic, we had a better performance than yesterday; yesterday we showed a lot of respect to the United States. We have faced the Dominican Republic in other tournaments, and that gave us more confidence that we could play better today. We had several strong plays in defense, attack, and even in blocking. I am satisfied with the game we showed. However, throughout the tournament, we will progress and improve, and against Cuba tomorrow, I hope we have an even better performance. In this match, our middle blocker Nhya (number 18) was the most important player in attack; she is a player with a great future, being only 16 years old, and she played very well against a very high-level opponent. Overall, the team did not hold back in any aspect against a strong rival.”

Cuba succumbs to USA on day two of the NORCECA Championships

QUEBEC CITY, Canada. August 30, 2023 : Team USA’s strong offense was too much for a young Cuban squad today at the 2023 NORCECA Senior Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship in Quebec, Canada, which runs from August 29 to September 3 at the PEPS’ Amphithéatre Desjardins-Université Laval.

UnitedTeam USA Chiaka Ogbogu hits a shot against Team Cuba  States vs Cuba

Karch Kiraly, head coach of USA: “Every point of every match is important here, but our team is doing a nice job of controlling the things that we’ve been working on in terms of our first ball touch and our service pressure … We are looking forward playing Dominican Republic – we have a lot of respect for them; it’s a great team, one of the great teams in our zone. We’ve played them a lot in the last 10 years plus.. it’s wonderful to face the challenge that they present.”

Osmani García, head coach of Cuba: “We knew we would face the Olympic champion, one of the best teams in the world, and our athletes brought an individual commitment for technical-tactical development. The first set was played with a lot of insecurity; they entered feeling a lot of pressure. Later, as the game dynamic progressed, there was some improvement, not as much as desired, but the players’ mood improved, and they started gaining confidence. Some blocks worked, which was what we had planned. The counterattacks were varied. We’re not happy, we’re not satisfied, but the team continues to grow little by little.”

Brie King of Canada setting against Mexico

Nicola Negro, head coach of Mexico: “I congratulate my players for their performance because we arrived here in a difficult situation, most of us only last night, very late. Our setter was sick just before the game, but the girls that were on the court showed a good will and spirit. There is a difference between us and Canada, especially in attack – that’s the big gap. We put a bit of pressure on serve, but they had solutions for us in transition because of their quality of play.  It’s a small pool of three teams, so the second match is key for us. We need to recover and bring our energy against Puerto Rico.”

Shannon Winzer, head coach of Canada: “I do think that we showed up with a little bit of nerves today and we played through that. I don’t think we played the cleanest volleyball to start off. But we found some rhythm and by the third set we looked more like ourselves. It was great to start off with a game like this and hopefully have some momentum going into the match with Puerto Rico tomorrow. Mexico is a tough serving team and I thought we did a good job coming around to controlling first contact after a rough start.”

Yonkaira Peña (DOM) attacks against Cuba

Marcos Kwiek, head coach of Dominican Republic: “It was a good start. Beginning a tournament by winning a match 3-0 is good, but we need to keep working hard towards the goals we want to achieve in this competition. Today, the goal was to give rhythm to players who were coming from a break and who had only been training; almost all the players had the opportunity to play.”

Osmani García, head coach of Cuba: “We knew that the match against the Dominican Republic was going to be tough; the Dominican Republic is a high-level team and should reach the podium here. Actually, our team didn’t perform even at 50% of its capabilities, even though we are aware of injuries and some accumulated fatigue. They lacked attitude on the court that we need to recover during the rest of the event to perform better in the competition.”

United States celebrates against Costa Rica

Karch Kiraly, head coach of USA: “I thought our team today did a really nice job of honoring our opponent by playing really hard against them; and honoring the game. We took care of the things that we could control – we’ve been working hard over the last few weeks on the speed of our offense and that really showed. So, some nice things coming out of today. “

Jose Miguel Brinceño, coach of Costa Rica: “It was a match that demanded a lot from us. We have a young team against a highly experienced American team, they are the Olympic champions. We had some flashes of good plays, but blocking was one of our weaknesses. Our serving was relatively good, but we were up against a strong team.”

Coaches looking ahead to an important competition in Canada

QUEBEC, Canada, August 28, 2023.- The 2023 NORCECA Senior Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship in Quebec, Canada, runs from August 29 to September 3 at the PEPS’ Amphithéatre Desjardins-Université Laval.

Shannon Winzer, head coach of Canada: “This really important for ranking points, but whenever we are playing within our region, we want to be one of the top teams.  The last time we played in the NORCECA Championship we were third and our intention is to improve on that result, and we want to see ourselves in that gold-medal game. I think this sets the tone for the rest of the summer – I think we’re in a really good spot. Playing at home is so exciting – the environment that they have created here in Quebec is amazing to be part of it. It adds an extra element of wanting to do our best on this stage.”

Jose Miguel Brinceño, coach of Costa Rica: “The expectations we have are that there will be a lot of learning from the team we’re bringing, which is quite young. We have under 19 players, some players who are starting in the senior team process, and players who have had significant international participation. We hope that these players fit in well and that in the upcoming years, they become a strong foundation for the senior team. “We want to learn from the best teams, participate in the best way, and give our best performance in every match, so that with each game we improve progressively.”

Osmani García, head coach of Cuba: “We arrived here right after a very strong tournament in the Dominican Republic, and our group is still covered in the dust from the plane. The expectations will be to strategize day by day and seek the highest number of ranking points. At this moment, we are not qualified for the pre-Olympic events; we are looking to form a group towards the Pan American Games.”

Marcos Kwiek, head coach of Dominican Republic: “It’s my first time competing here in Canada with the Dominican team; I’ve been with the team for 16 years and it’s my first time here. We are very excited with the tournament. It’s a very important tournament. I don’t take this as a preparation tournament, it’s a very important tournament, it’s part of the Olympic qualifier. We are here to compete at a great level, it’s obvious that every team here wants the same goal, and we are one more team who wants to win the tournament; it’s part of our preparation for the qualification for the Olympic Games”.

Victor Javier Gutierrez, manager of Mexico: “Mexico always comes to do the best possible in all events, and this time is no exception, so we expect a good event for Mexico. It will be a great competition; apparently, the teams that are here are coming with their top players, so it will be a strong and interesting competition.”

Fernando Morales, head coach of Puerto Rico, “We’re looking to be in the last four, the semifinals. So we will try to win our group and be directly in the semifinals. If not, the goal is to win the quarterfinal match and then after that try to get a medal. But our first objective is to be in those semifinals.

We have had a good summer so far; we have played in three tournaments and in all those tournaments we have been in the finals. We know this will be a harder, but we want to be in that semifinals and fight for a medal.”

Karch Kiraly, head coach of United States: “We’re really excited about competing in our zone in our Continental Championship; they happen every two years and are really important in our ranking points – they often happen at the end of the season when teams are trying to reach their peak and hone their game. It’s not only a great test in itself, but also great preparation for the many teams who are here who will be competing very soon afterward in the Olympic qualification process. This is an important combination of tournaments. “We love playing great competition across the next. … We’re looking forward to that.”

Brad Rostratter, coach of the United States: It was a very exciting game with a very exciting atmosphere, we are very happy to have competed here and to have competed with a team as strong as the Dominican Republic and achieved victory, I think that if I would not have used different lineups in previous games to keep everyone on pace and without our depth on the bench this would not have been possible.

Marcos Kwiek, coach of the Dominican Republic: It was a game fought all the time, that leaves us happy, today we faced a team that was very consistent, very solid in all aspects, we tried to make some changes, some adjustments and it didn’t work out for us but it’s part of what we have done, rotate players, at no time during the tournament did we have the same six players playing all the time so that they were in rhythm, but that is what we need, put young people to play with that pressure so that they learn, now comes a tournament Continental that is very important and we have to play with more intensity.

Cuba wins bronze in Final Six

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, August 26, 2023.- After losing the first set, the Cuban team made adjustments to win the next three and defeat Mexico in a tight match 3-1 (22-25, 25-17 , 25-17, 25-18) and take the bronze in the NORCECA Pan American Cup Final Six.

Cuba outscored Mexico in spikes 49-42 and in blocks 15-4.

Gretell Moreno, captain of Cuba: It was a very difficult game, Mexico went out on the court to give it their all, I think they studied the first clash they had with us well and were able to come up with a tactic that cost us work at the beginning of the game but in general it was a good game where both teams won in development, which in the end was what we came to this competition for.

Joseline Landeros, captain of Mexico: We knew it was going to be a difficult match, we started well following the instructions and with a positive attitude and the cause of the result we had was not being able to close the sets.

“The players were very focused today. Super focused, it’s unbelievable how focused they are. This is a great group; they’re working so hard. Amazing”.

Isaac Helsinga, best player from Canadá: “I feel pretty good. I know it’s a big feat playing Mexico in Mexico. So it was super fun just to get out there. The one thing that stood out for us today that we all did amazing job at was just block defense”.

“We did a lot of game plan on what to expect from the attackers and we did a good job at figuring out how to manipulate our arms and our footwork so that we could get lots of blocks and lots of digs”.

Concentration and confidence are important for a young player, and that’s where you see the result”.

It’s my first time playing in this position, and for me, it’s a positive aspect to be among the top scorers. I feel very good about that. Coaches Expectations for the Final Six

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, August 19, 2023.- During the preliminary meeting of the Women’s Final Six Tournament, the coaches of the six participating teams discussed their expectations for the event.

Leivis García, coach of Cuba:

For us, participation in this tournament is very important since it is the first after the Pan American Cup for Seniors held in Puerto Rico, in which we could not participate, and we have new figures in the team because it is projected to medium and in the long term and the expectations are to seek to raise the competitive level and find a good place within the event.

Marcos Kwiek, coach of the Dominican Republic:

We are the venue, it is the second time that this Tournament has been held in the Dominican Republic, the expectation is to play at a good level, to be able to reach the final and play in front of our fans and that it will serve as a very good preparation for the Continental that will be held in Canada from August 27 to September 4.

Nicola Negro, coach of Mexico:

We want to try some new players who had not been with the team and this is a competition that prepares us for the NORCECA Continental of Canada and also for the Pre-Olympic, which are two very important events and we are here hoping to get the best result.

Carolyn O’Dwyer, coach of Canada:

I think we have a very young team, there are some athletes who joined the Senior team just now in the Pan American Cup that was held in Puerto Rico but we have trained hard throughout the summer so our expectations are high and we consider ourselves a strong team for this tournament.

Brad Rostratter, United States coach:

We want to continue doing what we did in Puerto Rico, continue to grow as a team and continue to be one of the strongest teams in the area. We are in a good moment and we are going for the victory in this Tournament.

Kenneth Martinez, assistant coach of Puerto Rico:

The team is relatively young, made at the last moment, the projections are to see their development, how they develop to continue offering them opportunities.

Sometimes you can tell when we’re having a hard time finding the rhythm, but having a slow start and then finding it and getting the result is important to us.”

Sebastian Blanco, Peru’s top scorer: “At first I was very nervous, I felt that I had a lot of pressure in the game and I had to assume what the coach had told me. I started from less to more and the work I’ve done these days has been reflected in today’s result”.

Sebastián Ortiz, coach of Colombia: “The second set boosted our spirits to face the match. Then we were very focused and secured the victory 3-0, which possibly takes us to the quarterfinals”.

Liberman Agamez, top scorer of Colombia: “It was important to win today. The second set gave us some trouble because Peru is a great team, and we knew it would be challenging. But after that second set, we regrouped a bit and managed the game. The key was reception and blocking; it helped us a lot and was very important”.

Juan Carlos Gala, coach of Peru:  “We started the first set very poorly, we recovered, but couldn’t sustain it. In the second set, it was the same, our own mistakes allowed the opponent to stay alive, and in the third, everything fell apart. It’s very difficult to recover after a second set played like that, but well, we have to continue, this is not over”.

Canada pre match protocol

Daniel Lewis, coach of Canada: “Well, it was a very important victory for us. It wasn’t as important for us to win as it was to play better. I asked some of the players to adopt a slightly different style of play, and they were able to execute it. It’s really nice to get the win. Dominican Republic is a very strong attacking team, and they put a lot of stress on us, especially in that second set. We couldn’t adapt until the third and fourth sets. But I’m very proud of my boys. They were under a lot of pressure, and they executed well”.

Isaac Heslinga, top scorer of Canad: “We started a bit tense, but as we progressed in the match, we began to realize that almost everything was working out as we wanted, as we needed to, and we trusted our training. One positive aspect was ensuring that we stuck to our fundamentals in blocking. We took advantage on the service side, managing them well and keeping them effective. We started playing and developing as a team, found some rhythm, and ended with a good victory”.

Tomas Parraguirre, Chile’s top scorer: “It felt really good to get back to our level after yesterday’s defeat. We are happy to continue advancing in this tournament and keep going. What we have been doing is preparing for the Pan American Games at home, but these tournaments are a goal in themselves, and we always want to play and fight with the bests”.

Dusan Bonacic, captain of Chile: “We are very happy, it was a categorical 3-0, we had control and the rhythm throughout the game, it was not something we expected because Puerto Rico is a tough opponent, but it’s good that everything went our way, I congratulate the whole team”.

Oswald Antonetti, Coach of Puerto Rico: “On one side there is frustration, disappointment, on the other we think that it is an inevitable process of growth with young players of 19-20 years old. Peru took advantage of the attacks 39-30, but Cuba was better in blocking 10-5 and in serves 3-2. But the unforced errors were what tipped the scales in favor of Peru, which has a 1-1 record and will face off against Colombia this Thursday, while Cuba (0-2) will face Mexico.

The Peruvian captain, Eduardo Romay, finished with 14 points, while Sebastián Blanco and Maikel Jaramillo finished with 8 points each. Meanwhile, Cuba had Yohan León, with 12 points, as its best scorer.

Peru celebrates defeating Cuba

Juan Carlos Gala, coach of Peru: “The team played much better today, we organized our tactics, and it was an even match, unfortunately Cuba was not in its day, they could not play with their serve and that weakens them. We are happy, we come to this, to learn and when you win you also learn; It is one of the virtues that we have that we always try to learn something new. Now we wait for the match against Colombia”.

The middle blocker Daniel Urueña, from Peru: “Yesterday we were left with a bitter taste of not defeating the host, but today we came out more focused and organized to face Cuba, which is a power team, and we managed to get the victory. The strategy and discipline we had made the difference today.”

Mario Izquierdo, coach of Cuba: “We drew up a technical plan and we were not able to comply with it. We were playing even when the indications that the technical group raised were fulfilled, but after point 15, the athletes were not able to maintain tactical discipline while Peru fulfilled this better than us. We fell with our reception again and our complex 1 (K1) has not been very effective”.

Brazil tops Group B after beating Canada in straight sets.

Guadalajara, August 16, 2023.- Brazil secured first place in pool B by beating Canada 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-21) on second day of XVI Men’s Senior Pan American Cup.

Canada debuted the tournament and found a very strong Brazilian team in attacks and serves, scoring 10 aces, especially with Darlan Ferreira and Marcus Evangelista.

Brazil was better in attacks 36-28, in blocking they were surpassed by Canada 4-3, but made a large difference in serves 10-1, finishing with 24 errors against 26 by the Canadians.

Marcus and Darlan finished with 12 points each for Brazil, while Isaac Heslinga had 9 points for Canada.

Canada will play the Dominican Republic for second place in group B this Thursday at 4:00 p.m., while Brazil finished top in this pool undefeated advancing to next round.

Brazil celebrates defeating Canada

Carlos Schwanke, coach of Brazil: “we reached our first goal which was to advance to next round, now we must wait for our opponents, and we are going to work based on that. Once again it was a good game, it allowed us to give other players space to gain experience, which is an important part for us.”

Marcus, Brazil wing spiker: “I feel very good, we played well, we managed to overcome adversity and we controlled the game in difficult moments and above all we didn’t were too confident during the match. A good teamwork, I am very happy for everyone and now we must wait for our opponents since we are qualified for the next round”.

Daniel Lewis, coach of Canada: “Brazil is a great team, for them it was their second match, and they were already familiar with the game. The first set was one of adjustments for the boys, in the second they had already found their rhythm and played well, which you could see by the final score of the set. I think that at critical moments we weren’t making the right plays, we were able to extend the match to a fourth set, although Brazil handled the pressure well.”

Fynnian McCarthy, captain of Canada: “I feel a bit frustrated with how we started, we weren’t as good as we expected. Throughout the game we were growing and increasing our level matching to what we’ve trained for the last 10 weeks. We’re getting better and the first match is always difficult. I think we feel good about the path we’re on.”

Kyle McCauley, USA Wing Spiker: “There was a great atmosphere in Guadalajara and that makes me and all the guys on the team feel very good for the game as we came out with great energy. We all contributed a lot to the win today and we feel satisfied about that.”

Daniel Nejamkin, Chile’s coach: “The United States played very well, we could never find our game; In the second set we managed to find ourselves a little more due to the opponent’s mistakes than due to our own successes’ points. We hope we can play better tomorrow.”

The tournament begins with the 16 teams split into four pools, with each of them playing their pool opponents once over the first three days of competition.

The third and fourth-placed teams in their original pools will compete for positions 9-16 in pools G and H while the squads that get the same positions in pools E and F will play for positions 5-8.

All 16 teams will be in action on the opening day of the event, with four matches taking place in each host city. In Leon, hosts Mexico will face Japan at 20:30 local time (02:30 UTC, Friday).

Played from 1977 to 2021, the U20 World Championship had nine different winners. With six victories (1987, 1989, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007), Brazil is the most successful nation in the category, followed by Russia/USSR (1991, 1997, 1999) and China (1995, 2013, 2017) with three and Korea (1977, 1981), Cuba (1985, 1993) and Italy (2011, 2021) with two. Germany (2009), the Dominican Republic (2015) and Japan (2019) complete the list of winners.

Among the players that stood out in earlier editions of the tournament are Cuba’s Mireya Luis, Russia’s Ekaterina Gamova, Brazil’s Jaqueline Carvalho, Japan’s Saori Kimura, Italy’s Monica De Gennaro, the Dominican Republic’s Brenda Castillo, Türkiye’s Zehra Gunes and China’s Zhu Ting.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, August 15, 2023 – Mexico won a dramatic five-set battle against Peru 3-2 (23-25, 25-10, 25-19, 30-32, 15-10) in a Group C match that concluded the first day of the XVI Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup.

Peru claimed the first set, which was closely contested with a tie at 15-15 in attacks. Mexico recovered quickly and easily secured the second and third sets, but in the fourth, Peru rallied and put up a strong offensive resistance. In the fifth set, Mexico took an early 5-0 lead, enough to secure their first victory.

Monster Block Mexico vs Peru

Jorge Azair López, coach of Mexico: “We had many errors, I think the beginning is always tough. We got ourselves into a lot of trouble with reception and attacking, but the important thing is that we pulled through, and we’ll improve in the upcoming matches”.

Pedro Rangel, captain of Mexico: “We need to improve our mindset. We have the physical qualities, but at times, I feel like we get too confident, we let our guard down, and we can’t do that. We need to work on that because this group is very strong in other aspects”.

Juan Carlos Gala, coach of Peru: “These matches are like this. We had to face the home team, and our team was very inconsistent at times. The goal is to improve day by day, and we saw that in the way we reacted in the fourth set. I’m happy even though we didn’t secure the victory”.

Eduardo Romay, captain of Peru: “It was a match with a lot of ups and downs, we lacked consistency. We’re happy to have taken the fourth set; it helped us a lot emotionally. But I believe the second and third sets are unacceptable. For us, a fifth set was very valuable because I think we even had the chance to win”.

Colombia surprises reining champion Cuba in Pool C of the Men’s Pan American Cup

Colombia led in attacks 35-33, blocks 9-6, and Cuba managed 4 aces compared to Colombia’s 2 , with Colombia also capitalizing on 30 unforced errors from their opponents while committing only 18.

Piza from Colombia attacks and overtakes Cuba’s blockers

Sebastián Ortiz, coach of Colombia: “Colombia has a strong service, and today we did very well with variations in service speed. Cuba had some weaknesses that we knew how to take advantage of. It was a great match and starting the tournament with a 3-0 win gives us five points, which is wonderful”.

Leandro Mejía, captain of Colombia: “We were working towards this based on the intense preparation we had. We know Cuba is a strong rival, and we implemented what we trained for and got the result. We served very well, tactically, and our blocking was well-organized, which helped us strategically”.

Mario Izquierdo, coach of Cuba: “Our reception was very poor, and our outside hitters couldn’t solve some moments. Colombia served effectively, and we couldn’t respond to that technical aspect that affected us. Our second complex didn’t work, and we made many serving errors”.

Adrian Chirino, captain of Cuba: “This is the first game as a group we’ve had in these months. Colombia’s team has good players, and they played their game, and we couldn’t adjust. It’s another experience for us. We made a lot of mistakes, and as the competition progresses, we’ll improve”.

Carlos Schwanke, coach of Brazil: “We worked well, our serves were good, something that we managed to make an effect on the Dominican Republic, and it helped us have the perfect tactics to play against them. We played well, it’s the first match of the championship, and we did well with a focused team, aiming to play well”.

Matheus Goncalves, captain of Brazil: “The first game is always very difficult because there’s a lot of excitement, many emotions, and some anxiety, but it’s important to win the first game like this, 3-0. For us, it’s special to have the affection of the audience, the support of the Mexican people, and I hope it continues in the upcoming games as well”.

José Gutiérrez, coach of Dominican Republic: “Playing against Brazil is always a challenge, they are one of the best in the world for a reason. They applied a lot of pressure with their serves, breaking our reception, which put us in a complicated position. This is part of our growth; we have a long way to go, and we hope the players continue adding experience”.

Andy Read, coach of USA: “First, I want to acknowledge the work the organizers have done in providing such an excellent stage. It looks impeccable, and the audience is so engaged. I also want to congratulate Puerto Rico for their good work.”

Parker Van Buren, top scorer for the USA: “This is thanks to teamwork, the time we’ve trained together, the confidence we have in each other, and our commitment to doing what each of us is responsible for.”

Oswald Antonetti, coach of Puerto Rico: “There are good things, it’s a young team that needs to improve, gain a bit of character. It’s important for them to get to know each other, keep working, and aim for continuous growth. We got discouraged at one point; these are teams with a strong presence, and that’s part of what we need to improve.”

Omar Hoyos, captain of Puerto Rico: “It was a strong, closely-fought match. At the beginning, we shook off the nerves we had and started playing, although we lost that first set. In the second, we started poorly; it was our first game, and we believe we can take away good things and improve for what’s ahead.”

Pan American Senior Men’s Volleyball Cup with equal level, according to coaches

Guadalajara, August 14, 2023.- The XVI Pan American Senior Men’s Volleyball Cup that will give the last ticket to the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games for NORCECA Confederation and ranking points, will begin this Tuesday at the Astros Arena in Guadalajara.

Cuba, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic have already qualified to Santiago 2023 Games; but the cup will grant to the best NORCECA team ranked at the end of the competition the last ticket for the Pan-American Games.

The coaches of the 10 participating teams agree that this tournament will be very balanced since the Pan American Cup will allow to continue a training process for the new talents, who will get more experience and tactics.

Mario Izquierdo, head coach from Cuba: “We bring a fairly homogeneous group, with players from the base categories who are given the opportunity to get experience to guarantee the reserve for the national teams. For years we have been longing for a so-called ‘second group’, which gives a certain rest to the elite figures that we have established within the senior team.”

Daniel Nejamkin, head coach from Chile: “These help us to prepare for Santiago 2023 will allow us to get there with the best level. The team’s bet is to deliver the maximum in each of the matches and present the best possible level. It is normal to have new players, we are always looking for new talents that come from the base teams to follow the process for the senior team and the best are here. We take the incorporation of young people very naturally.”

Andy Read, head coach from USA: “There are some players who come from the youth process, and compared to the under-21 team this is much more experienced, we have many players who we believe will have the possibility to be in the future U.S. men’s national team. We hope to see them soon on the World Championship and World League rosters. We are looking to improve in the ranking of the tournament and hopefully we will go home with the gold medal.”

Carlos Schwanke, Head coach from Brazil: “We have new talents with the intention of giving them more international experience. When Brazil is in an event the idea is always to be in the first places, to represent the country well. We always try to place our players who are not able to be in the roster of the VNL or World Cups, so that when they go to these tournaments, they already have experience.”

José Gutiérrez, Head Coach from Dominican Republic: “This is our fourth participation in the Pan American Cup, but this year has more teams and that is a special meaning. The idea is to try to continue improving, that the men’s team follows the line of development, because we are showing that it has been growing. We want the team to be able to maintain what it has shown so far, beyond the result that can be presented because there are technical objectives that we need to meet.”

Jorge Azair López, Head Coach from Mexico: “This is a strong tournament, quite even because the powerful countries do not bring their main teams and that makes us think that we have a very even competition. We are at home and always the goal is to win the event. We are in a process with a young team, with rotation of players, but always thinking about going out to win.”

Daniel Lewis, Head Coach from Canada: “We have a really interesting group here, a combination of young and experienced players. Playing in Mexico is great, there are many good teams here and good youth players, that allows players who need to rest and train for other events. We expect a really good tournament, that’s why we’re excited and happy.”

Sebastian Ortiz, Head Coach from Colombia: “We bring a mixed team, with young people and experienced players, who will try to give the best presentation and will be as preparation for upcoming events such as the South American.”

Juan Carlos Alas, Head Coach from Peru: “It is our first tournament in a year, it will help us prepare for the South American Games, but we will not stop competing. We have prepared well, it will help to adjust elements for another competition, we are in a difficult group with powerful teams, but we will fight”.

Oswald Antonetti, Head Coach from Puerto Rico: “It is important to continue with a process with the young players, we know they are talented and will meet a serious level of play and level in the Pan American Cup and we will keep constantly growing and take advantage of every opportunity we have.”

Argentina, led by Olympic (bronze, Seoul 1988) and world (bronze, Buenos Aires 1982) medalist Daniel Jorge Castellani, was able to resist Puerto Rico’s push to take the victory and the gold medal.

Argentina won the first two sets, but Puerto Rico, backed by a huge fan base, rallied dramatically in the third set. The Panthers were dominating the set, 21-17, and the Puerto Ricans came from behind to take it, 25-23. In the fourth, the home team dominated it to extend the match to a fifth set. Then, Argentina came out with everything to seal the victory in five sets.

Puerto Rico and Argentina had met in the group phase, and the result was for the locals.

Bianca Cugno was the best scorer for Argentina with 16 points, (14 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace); Paula Nizetich with 12 points (10 attacks, 2 aces); and Daniela Bulaich with 11 (9 attacks, 1 blocks, 1 ace). For Puerto Rico, Pilar Victoriá with 22 points (21 attacks, 1 ace); Alondra Vázquez with 19 points (18 attacks, 1 blocks), and Paola Santiago with 16 points (15 attacks, 1 ace).

This gold medal is the best presentation of Argentina in the Pan American Cup. Previously, they had won three bronze medals (2008, 2013, 2015).

Puerto Rico, for its part, adds its second silver medal (2016, 2023), and has three bronzes (2009, 2014, 2017).

Argentina players celebrate

Daniel Jorge Castellani, Coach of Argentina: “It’s a huge happiness. We have worked very hard. I’m happy for the girls. Resisting, that was the key in the fifth set. We knew that at some point Puerto Rico was going to play its game, that they were going to be supported by the public; but we resisted. We started the tie-break differently and we had control of the match”.

Victoria Mayer, Captain of Argentina: “I am happy for this group that has been fighting for a long time, has been growing, has been doing many things and today we managed to crown it with this championship. It is the beginning of a very long process. I’m happy for the team because they all contributed. The aggressiveness and with the determination that we entered to play, that was the key”.

Fernando Morales, Coach of Puerto Rico: “At the end of the game I told the girls that I am very proud of this group. This is the first year of the replacement and we have completed three finals in three tournaments, we cannot ask for more. Finals are 50-50, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. We couldn’t win today, but we took three steps forward in this tournament because we beat the Dominican Republic, who had to get out of their heads and backs, and we reached the finals. The group grows playing in finals; win or lose, the group grows. I think from the beginning we were out of gas. We could not start. We took the third game at the end and in the fourth, they had a problem putting the ball in. We could never give 100% and it was understandable because we had fifteen sets in three consecutive nights and today five more. Also, in the fifth we were unlucky because the ball didn’t go in. For all the fatigue we carried, it was played well”.

United States revalidated the bronze medal by defeating the Dominican Republic

PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 13, 2023.- United States revalidated the bronze medal from last year in Sonora, Mexico; by winning this Sunday in four sets, 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 27-25) against the Dominican Republic in the closing of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachín Auditorium “Vicéns de Ponce.

United States celebrates winning the bronze medal

Brad Rostratter, Coach of Unites States: “I mean that game was electric, and Dominican is a very tough opponent and they played really well. It was a battle for that bronze medal match, and we couldn’t be prouder to take it home. I think the most important piece is we’ve had different people step up in different moments and the more we stay together, the more we get better as a coaching staff and as a team. The better that is for us moving forward down to the Dominican Republic (Final Six)”

Simone Lee, Best Scorer of Unites States: “I’m really excited. We were down in the fourth set, and we were able to comeback really strong. I think that showed just a lot of our team’s grit and fight especially after yesterday losing to Argentina in such a way and to have such a big turn around and play so well together as a team it just makes this moment even sweeter”.

Marcos Kwiek, Coach of the Dominican Republic: “It wasn’t what we wanted, obviously. We wanted to be playing in the final now, but we were able to get a lot out of the tournament. We had a lot of young players in the rotation, and they responded well. This tournament helped us to have the youngsters under pressure starting with the older ones, and that was very positive. Now, our total focus is on the Final Six, NORCECA Continental and the Olympic qualifier.”

Amanda Coneo scored 30 points in Colombia’s victory over Peru

Antonio Rizola Neto, Coach of Colombia: “It’s a great victory. We are here because of Cristóbal (Marte, president of NORCECA) Cristóbal put us here. Out of respect for him and his help we are here. It is a joy to come out with the victory and fifth place, it is an important position for Colombia. And I want to dedicate it to Cristóbal for the effort he has made for us to be here. Many thanks to Cristóbal and NORCECA”.

Amanda Coneo, Colombia’s Best Scorer: “We knew it was going to be like a final. Peru was not going to allow another defeat like the previous one. I am very proud of the team that knew how to handle the whole game. We kept a cool head to be able to advance in the other sets. Without them I can’t do anything and each one had its moment. Thank God I was able to contribute to the victory”.

Francisco Hervas Tirado, Coach of Peru: “For us it has been a very interesting tournament. We achieved a bit of what we were looking for, which was to give the team a run, try some things and we have the conclusions that we must continue working on how to improve in those fifth sets, which is costing us a little. I am happy with the work of the girls because they made a great effort in this very tough tournament”.

Mexico finished in seventh place by beating Canada

PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 13, 2023.- Mexico defeated Canada, 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23) this Sunday to claim the seventh position of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.

Canada was dominating the fourth set, 22-19, and Mexico made the final comeback to close the set, 25-23, and claimed victory on the last day of the tournament.

Mexico dominated Canada in all stats with 57-53 in attacks, 10-9 in blocks and 7-5 in aces.

The Mexican opposite Karen Rivera was the best scorer of the match with 27 points (23 attacks, 1 block and three aces); captain Jocelyn Urias with 17 points (10 kills, 7 blocks); and María Fernanda Rodríguez with 10 points in attacks. For Canada, Vicky Savard with 17 points (16 attacks, 1 block); Andrea Mitrovic with 17 points in attacks; and Sydney Grills with 13 points (7 attacks, 2 blocks, 4 aces).

Mexico vs Canada

Nicola Negro, Coach of Mexico: “This was our final and happily we got seventh. We expected to be in a better position, but this was our end and we won. The tournament was very positive considering how we got to Ponce and how we have grown. We finished with 4-4 and with important victories against Puerto Rico and Canada. They are victories that give us morale and confidence. We hope to recover the cast and give some continuity to our work”.

Karen Rivera, Best Scorer of Mexico: “We also thought we would close this tournament well because next week we will travel to the Dominican Republic (Final Six), so it is very important for the team’s spirit. I am very happy, and I finish with a good taste in my mouth. Despite the past games, I think I finished in a good way. Happy to contribute to my team”.

Shannon Winzer, Coach of Canada: “I still don’t think we’re really far, really close to our full potential. In this game, I thought when we could pass, we played well, and our passing broke down at the end of that fourth match when we were up 22-19, passing broke down and we lost the game. I think that’s sort of been our story this whole tournament. We struggle to control that first contact and it’s almost impossible to beat teams with our level of passing right now. So, our A team will get back together, we’ll have our full squad for the continental NORCECA championship. This tournament was an opportunity for us to try and develop some young athletes and at the NORCECA we’ll have our full team and we’ll be looking to play for a gold medal there”.

Puerto Rico for the gold!

PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 12, 2023.- The Puerto Rican National Team will play for the gold medal against Argentina by defeating the Dominican Republic this Saturday in five exciting sets, 3-2, in semifinals of the XX Pan American Cup Senior Women’s Volleyball at the Juan “Pachin” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.

Puerto Rico took the victory with partial scores of 25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-7.

The Puerto Ricans made a great comeback after losing the second and third sets, to extend the match to a fifth set. Puerto Rican spiker Paola Santiago was the protagonist of the decisive set. Puerto Rican Head Coach Fernando Morales

Fernando Morales, Coach of Puerto Rico: “Victory has arrived! We’ve been waiting 11 years for this. We knew this group was going to do it. Maybe we didn’t think it was going to be so soon, but we knew they would. They didn’t go away, without our two most important players Brittany (Abercrombie) and Shara (Venegas). This group does not give up. They don’t doubt them. They are not afraid of anyone, and they have shown it. We had a bad game against Mexico, we came back, and we had three good games in a row (all to five sets). The key today was aggressiveness and Paola Santiago, who came off the bench, changed our game in everything: offensively, serving, she made the rally, and the digs. She did everything in the fifth set. We will look for the gold tomorrow (against Argentina). We are already here; tiredness won’t be a factor. The tournament has been long and strong, but we don’t have to think about anything else”.

Paola Santiago, Outside Hitter of Puerto Rico: “I have no words about this victory. It was great teamwork. We all contributed to this victory. I am very proud of the work we have done this summer. I stayed calm and followed Fernando’s (Morales, coach) instructions to serve Brayelin (Martínez). He was cold-hearted to attack her with the serve and that’s how it was”.

Marcos Kwiek, Coach of the Dominican Republic: “It was a good game. A match in which Puerto Rico was very good in the fifth set. The entire game was good. In the fifth set we were way down. They pressured us well from the beginning with the serve and we didn’t know how to react. Congratulations to them. Tomorrow we will fight for that bronze (against the United States). We are going to go out as usual, a team that will seek the medal and the results, which is very important for us”.

Argentina surprised United States and will play for the gold medal.

PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 12, 2023.- Argentina surprised United States in the semifinal with a victory, 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 27-25), to advance to the match by the gold medal this Sunday of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachin” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.

The Panthers dominated the first set 23-20. United States managed to tie (23-23) the score. Paula Nizetich attack for the point 24 and Argentina’s set point, but their never reached the final point. United States closed out the set, 26-24. The second was the other way around since United States dominated 23-20 and couldn’t close out. Argentina won the second set and tied the match.

In the third, Argentina dominated the set 24-16, but United States made four straight points to close the lead, 24-20. An error in the service of United States gave the point 25.

The excitement intensified in the fourth set. Argentina was ready to win the game with the score 24-20, but United States had a plan and tied it (24-24), and then at 25-25. The middle blocker Candelaria Herrera attacked twice to close the set, 27-25 giving the victory to Argentina.

Argentina vs United States

For the United States, Simone Lee with 18 points (16 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace); Taylor Mims with 15 points (14 attacks and 1 ace); and Madeleine Gates with 12 points (7 attacks, 4 blocks and 1 ace).

Daniel Jorge Castellani, Coach of Argentina: “Happiness is what I feel. Congratulations for the girls because they have worked very hard. We had two very important rivals and high-level games with Canada (quarterfinal) and the United States (semifinal). Today we knew that the United States was better than Canada and we had to surpass them. The girls have outdone themselves once again. I am learning to coach women’s volleyball. For me it is all new. Being five (points), eight (points) up, going back down, going up again… it’s all a roller coaster. I must get used to it, but the girls have remained calm, played, and got the game. And tomorrow we are going to enjoy the final”.

Paula Nizetich, Outside Hitter of Argentina: “It is very satisfying to make history again with this group that has been working for a long time. It is a very great emotion to make history with Las Panteras. I told my teammates that Argentina must be always an aggressive team, that we don’t give up, that we have patience and that we play intelligently that the game must change, and it happened. Tomorrow we are going with more desire and more battle-hardened than today”.

Brad Rostratter, Coach of United States: “Argentina played great. They played really, well. They did a lot of things that are high level. (Tomorrow) is an important match so we need to respond and be ready to compete with Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic”.

Peru advances to the match for positions 5/6

PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 12, 2023.- Peru will play against Colombia for positions 5/6 of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup, defeating Canada this Saturday in three close sets (3-0) with scores from 25-20, 25-22, 25-21, at the Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.

Peru fell, 3-2, to Canada in the group stage. The Peruvians managed to maintain control of each set and the advantage, when their opponents tried to come from behind.

The triumph guided Peru to the match for positions 5/6 against Colombia this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Canada will play Mexico for positions 7/8.

The captain of Peru, Karla Ortiz, was the best scorer of the match with 20 points (18 kills, 1 block, 1 ace); Ysabella Sánchez contributed with 14 points (13 attacks, 1 ace); and María Paula Rodríguez with 12 points (10 attacks, 1 blocks, 1 ace).

Peru vs Canada

For Canada, Shainah Joseph finished with 12 points (11 kills and one block) and Andrea Mitrovic with 11 pts.

Francisco Hervas Tirado, Coach of Peru: “The team is very proud that the girls are doing an important job. We needed a joy. You work a lot and, in the end, sometimes you fall short, and you don’t quite find that reward. Today I am very happy for them because it was a very important game for everyone. Now, to enjoy it and think about tomorrow’s game (against Colombia). We had already lost 3-2 with Canada and we considered the opportunity to have a challenge; and tomorrow we will have it with Colombia, which we also lost 3-2 and we are going with the same idea. Sometimes life doesn’t give you that opportunity to have a second chance so quickly. We will have it now, and we are going to try to take advantage of it”.

Ysabella Sánchez, Outside hitter of Peru: “We went all out because we wanted to win. We wanted to fight for fifth place because the match we lost with them (Mexico) we lost due to lack of concentration, I think. This time we went all out. For tomorrow we are focused against Colombia. It will be a difficult match, but we are going to give it our all”.

Shannon Winzer, Coach of Canadá: “Tomorrow, we play Mexico. Mexico’s been playing some good volleyball. Today, we absolutely underperformed. Peru did a good job, and they took advantage of our poor performance, and they won the game. It’s difficult to win games when we make so many errors and we can’t have that. This is international volleyball the game moves too quick and there is not a good performance”.

Match action Colombia vs Mexico

Antonio Rizola Neto, Coach of Colombia: “A position we didn’t want to be in. We wanted to be in the semifinal but now the best position is fifth. We must fight for it with everything, as we fought today. We played tactically disciplined, mainly with the quality of our serve, and the blocking made the difference at the end of the third set. Victory always makes me happy.”

Jocelyn Urias, Captain of Mexico: “We entered a little weak. We had to have pushed from the start. Colombia did not enter with all the energy in the world either, and if we had entered with that energy, perhaps the result would have been different. Colombia is a very complete team. It has always been a good fight against Mexico. Tomorrow, we want to close as well as possible and always end with the best”.

We leave happy, and at the Pan American Games (in Chile) we are going to fight for a medal”.

Beatriz Novoa, Captain of Chile: “It is always good to finish a tournament with a victory. In this championship we made a good demonstration, compared to other Pan American Cups that we have participated in. Very happy for the group, but we still have many things to improve. I gave the team everything I wanted and what I could. I am very satisfied, but never comfortable. I will continue training and improving”.

Pablo Acuña, Coach of Costa Rica: “The important thing for us in these competitions is to analyze the team’s performance well. We got a lot of feedback on what we can improve at the K1 level because I think it was a big problem. In addition, the reception and attack from the serve. That is what we are looking for in this tournament, to give us the indicators where we must improve to work on them”.

INTERVIEWS

Reider Lucas, Guatemala Coach: “I said at the beginning in the preliminary inquiry that it was going to be a very balanced tournament, and at the same time, it was going to be very competitive due to the rivalry among the countries. This makes the event even more beautiful. As you can see, the champion is decided on the last day. We are very happy; this is the fourth edition we have won. We trusted a lot of young athletes, and we knew that with them, we could achieve a result. We have athletes with a longer life in volleyball, which helps us a lot within the group. We missed some athletes due to personal commitments, but they are part of this process.”

Horacio Angulo Calderón, Panama Coach: “We faced a quite solid team; we tried to play our game, but Guatemala worked very well. The assessment I make of the tournament is that it’s quite competitive. Guatemala lost to Costa Rica. The teams came to do their job, and it shows that fatigue reveals many things at some point; my team fell due to physical fatigue, we tried and fought until the end.”

INTERVIEWS

Albert Humes, Belize Coach: “The team has put heart and unity to make our country proud, but it hasn’t been good enough for us. We must go back to the drawing board and see where we have deficiencies and resolve them. This has been a great tournament that I have been training for over 30 years, and this is a process where I have seen the teams so competitive, for example, Honduras loses one day and then wins the next day, a constant up and down. So, this is a beautiful tournament this year, and I hope we continue to have tournaments like this. The quality of the product produced by AFECAVOL and delivered to the world is excellent, and we have shown that we can reach the level of major competitions”.

Jorge Mena, Nicaragua Coach: Did not attend the interview.

INTERVIEWS

Marco Sugiyama, Honduras coach: “Analyzing the tournament, there was a lot of competition between the teams, a lot of imbalances among us, but we need to start the next competition with better performance in order to compete for medals. I am happy with the boys, the competition is very good, and it has been a great joy to participate. We will be better prepared for the next competition”-

Johan Morales, Costa Rica coach: “I am disappointed in myself, I did not expect these results because we have a fairly strong selection. We came with a goal that was not achieved. It was a tournament with many ups and downs, with teams that caused surprises. We knew the two strongest rivals were Guatemala and Nicaragua, and coincidentally, we beat them. We forgot about the other teams. The blow of anxiety and happiness from beating the Champion after approximately eight years of not doing so was a double-edged sword because on the next day, when we played against El Salvador, a team we knew because they even practiced in Costa Rica, they beat us 3-0 and there the team declined psychologically. We tr

Fernando Morales, Coach of Puerto Rico: “It was a victory with a lot of character. I think yesterday’s game drained us a bit, and we didn’t have a lot of energy. This is the best victory of the summer because on a day when we weren’t playing well and we were able to stay disciplined, patient, there was trust between them, we trusted the game plan and we were able to get it out. And great teams put out great games when they don’t play well. Tomorrow, again, with the Dominican Republic we will do the same game plan that worked. We will see what we can change to take the victory. Being in the semifinal is another objective achieved and tomorrow is a fight, which is the first opportunity to win a medal. Let’s go all out tomorrow.”

Alondra Vázquez, Top Scorer for Puerto Rico: “We are happy because qualifying for the semifinals was one of our goals, as well as qualifying for the Pan American Games, and we also want to be on the medal podium. Colombia is a great team. We knew it would be a tough game, that we had to be patient, and we knew they were coming to play well too. At first, we started a bit cold, but then we warmed up. This is a team effort. We practice hard to work as a team, and I’m happy to be part of this teamwork.”

Antonio Rizola Neto, Coach of Colombia: “The idea was always to reach the semifinal. We are making sacrifices with players who are not physically well, and with a setter because María Alejandra (Marín), our captain-setter, is not playing. Angie Melisa is standing out very well on her own with all the pressure on her, and it’s very difficult. I don’t have the option of taking her out of the court to preserve María Alejandra’s health. We’re not happy about not making it to the semifinal, but we must acknowledge that we played a 3-2 match very well and had the possibility of winning the game. I’m pleased with the commitment and fight of my team. Tomorrow we will continue fighting with the determination that characterizes our team.”

The Panthers struck out their ticket to the semifinals

PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 11, 2023.- Argentina advanced this Friday to the semifinals of the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by defeating Canada 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 25- 12) at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.

Argentina had the opportunity to finish the match, 3-0, when in the third set they made a comeback to tie it at 20-20. Then, after another tie at 22-22, Canada was able to control to avoid the sweep. In the fourth set, Argentina made an eight-point rally (8-0) to put the score in their favor, 19-10; and from then on, Argentina did not look back until completing the mission: the semifinals.

Argentinian opposite Bianca Cugno was the best scorer of the match with 25 points (18 kills, 3 blocks, 4 aces); Paula Nizetich with 16 points (13 kills, 1 blocks, 2 aces); and Candelaria Herrera with 16 (10 kills, 6 blocks). Argentina vs Canada

Argentina will play this Saturday in the semifinals and waits for its rival at the end of the day. Canada is also on hold for their 5-8 qualifying match.

Daniel Jorge Castellani, Coach of Argentina: “It was the best match played so far. We had been having good productions, but there was always a little more to go. And today, we did that little bit more. Despite the fact that we lost (the fourth set), the team remained calm and composed. I’m happy. Tomorrow in the semifinals we will try to do this, be aggressive and put pressure on our serve”.

Shannon Winzer, Coach of Canada: “I think when we could control first contact, we did a really good job of attacking. I think Argentina did a fantastic job of putting pressure on us from the baseline, and we really struggled to control some of their spin servers. And when you’re passing breakdown, you can’t really run much of an offense. So yeah, I it like again, I think it would have been easy for us to give up in the, you know, fourth set and we didn’t. So, I think, you know, we’re a young team. We have a lot of young players here and I think they’re learning lots right now”.

Peru defeated Chile and will play for the classification of positions from 5 to 8

PONCE, PUERTO RICO, August 11, 2023.- Peru defeated Chile, 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-22, 25-16), and will play this Saturday for positions 5 to 8 in the XX Senior Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium in Ponce.

Francisco Hervas Tirado, Coach of Peru: “The last two games were difficult losing them, 3-2, and fighting, today we saw a whole team showing that we can play well. I think that in the second set the physical part weighed on us; We lost some concentration and, in this sport, when you lose that rhythm, it’s hard. The positive thing is that we were capable in the third set and in the fourth set to pick it up again, and work in a very complicated situation because this tournament is very tough. Tomorrow we will continue playing great games and see how far we get”.

Alejandro Marín Hormazábal, Coach of Chile: “We came with a clear idea of, deep down, trying to beat Peru for the first time in the history in an official tournament, a team that has a lot of history. But we could not. We had a good second set, but we couldn’t hold it. Peru began to play more and made our game difficult. I’m sorry we couldn’t show our best volleyball. Tomorrow we will continue doing our job”.

For tomorrow we hope to be able to compete and seek to be in the best possible position in the tournament”.

Nicola Negro, Coach of Mexico: “Today we started the game with a bit slow pace and with some technical problems.
