William Robinson, head coach of Cuba: “The team didn’t perform as expected. They were erratic in the first set; we improved every element of the game in the second set (K1, K2) and we couldn’t take advantage of our six-point lead. We must work on our serves and blocks. Mexico knew how to defend and that hurt Cuba”.

Tomorrow against Cuba we are hoping to perform better, they are physically strong”.

We will go on finding a better rhythm as the tournament advances”.

Camara Fatoumata, captain of Belize: “We expected Cuba to be bigger and more advanced, but we are in the same league. Because we have never played a continental championship before this was completely new for the team and I think we were too scared. Cuba was a beatable team, so we fell short in mentality. The next match we must come out believing we belong in this tournament”.

William Robinson, head coach of Cuba: “It was a good start, I expected more from them because they have more power blocking and serving. They showed strength in attacks, and they didn’t fail despite the opponent served with effect. This match helped us to drop “the ice” of the first match, for tomorrow we will come more confident against Puerto Rico”.

José Fontes, head coach of Belize: “We were all nervous, both the girls and the technical staff because it’s our first experience playing a Norceca. I am satisfied with the first match; we will grow as the championship develops; we are leaving this match knowing they can give more”.

USA (7) MCKENNA WUCHERER ATACKS

Rachel Fairbanks, captain of United States: “I was a solid win. One of our main focuses is being a more aggressive team and we did a good job of that, we could have improved in small balls, getting small tips. We love celebrating and it was a fun game”.

Dan Fisher, head coach of United States: “I liked that we were consistent, we didn’t give up a lot of runs in a row and that we were able to get a lot of players in; we’ll see how it goes. This is going to be a long tournament because we’re going to play every single day, maybe two times in a day so I think how we managed the load of the players was important”.

William Fernández, head coach of Guatemala: “The team started out shy because they were facing the champion of this age-group, a world power and senior Olympic champion, it’s a strong physical team and good technically. Guatemala was able to control the receiving on moments and that helped us play, we must improve in receiving to execute better”.

Newcomers Portes-Martinez win NORCECA Beach Tour in Varadero

VARADERO, Cuba, May 14, 2023.- NORCECA Beach Tour newcomers, Lázaro Portes and Daniel Martínez of Cuba surprised in their two last performances, sensationally conquering the second stage.

The victory of Portes and his giant partner (2.17 meters tall) over the experienced USA’s Troy Field and Tucker Silila in three exciting sets (21-18, 19-21, 15-10) in 55 minutes, was unexpected.

«I believe it was a tactical performance and not taking in account our physical preparation and technique, and how we might benefit from our height, we also had to think about what to do on the court», said Martínez Campos, son of Mabel, former player of many national indoor teams.

Nevertheless, their amazing feat was beating the Cuban A team of Noslen Díaz and Jorge Luis Alayo, who in 2022 won four NORCECA Tour medals, the NORCECA world championship qualifier, ranked 17 in worlds and champions of the I Junior Central American and Caribbean Sea and Beach Games of Santa Marta, Colombia, and this year newcomers at the Beach Pro Tour with an outstanding performance.

Portes and Martinez didn’t think of their opponent’s history nor their condition of tournament favorites. They followed coaches Alvarez Cutiño and Walfrido Salas instructions just to play. They remained connected, determined, and in 42 minutes they earned the sensational victory 21-14 and 21-18.

Varadero Men’s Gold Medal Match

«I am excited to have beat our compatriots, who we respect because in such a short time they have significant results, it’s wonderful», Lazaro expressed, who is shorter but skillful which combines with Daniel’s extraordinary height.

Just like in last years’ first time competing, Diaz and Alayo couldn’t win in Varadero, but they claimed the bronze once again after dominating Mexicans Jorge Barajas and Gabriel Cruz 21-16 and 21-18 in 36 minutes .

Precisamente Barajas y Cruz cayeron en la otra semifinal frente a los norteños Field y Tucker en dos parciales por 2-0 (14-21, 19-21).

Fifth place went to Canadians Jake MacNeil and William Russell, who without setbacks defeated Dominicans Oscar Martínez and Francisco de Jesús Goris 2-0 (21-11, 21-15).

Full results of this phase are at Cuba 2023 NORCECA Beach Tour.

USA wins second consecutive gold at U19 Pan American Cup

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 14, 2023.- United States claimed their second consecutive gold medal defeating Mexico 3-0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-18) at the Girls U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup at Dolores Martinez Coliseum in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico.

Keegan Cook, coach of United States: “I am so impressed by what Mexico did during bracket play, so we expected a battle. We just wanted to play close to our best, which we did in the first set, starting off strong. I am thankful to see these wonderful athletes perform at this level”.

Luis Bañuelos, coach of Mexico: “USA’s margin of error is minimum, they attack over our blocking, and they are a more physical team than ours. This kind of competition allows us to prepare for other international events like the world championship which is close to happen.

Puerto Rico wins the bronze medal in four sets

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 14, 2023.- Host Puerto Rico won the Girls U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup bronze medal defeating Costa Rica in four sets 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 29-27, 25-12) on Sunday at Dolores Martinez Coliseum in Juana Diaz.

Eduardo Galraza, coach of Puerto Rico: “We were up at the beginning of the sets, thinking of the win and in the fourth set I asked the girls to treasure the lead. Unlike yesterday that we couldn’t catch up with Mexico, today my middle hit the ball in, and our outside hitters were freer. We went to four because Costa Rica has a lot of energy”.

Edivaldo Bonilla, coach Costa Rica: “I am impressed with my team’s performance. They played the first two sets very well, and the third set could have gone either way and in the end Puerto Rico closed. We must go on gaining more international experience, even if they are young players, Puerto Rico has a history that strengthens them to be on top. It was a tournament of great level and we competed well, we dispatched a big team from our area (Dominican Republic).

USA defeats Costa Rica in three sets to reach the Gold Medal match

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 13, 2023.- United States defeated Costa Rica in three sets 25-14, 25-20, 25-6 to reach the gold medal match of the Girls’ U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup in Puerto Rico.

This is the second time in a row that the United States reaches a final and will battle for the title they won last year in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while Costa Rica is making history reaching their first medal match. Both await their opponent between Puerto Rico and Mexico.

The Americans held huge margins over Costa Rica, kills  (36-11), blocks (6-0) and aces (19-2), but Costa Rica committed fewer errors (14-27).

Abigail Vander Wal, outside hitter of USA was the only player who scored double figures, with 12 points on 9 kills and three aces. Blair Bayless contributed with 9 points and Loganlynn Parks scored 7 points, including a match-high of 5 aces.

Nhya Barley from Costa Rica ended with 4 points.

Abigail Vander Wal, top scorer of United States: “Our energy was a lot better in the third set; in the second set we had miscommunications, and it just wasn’t going right. I’m sure we can keep our energy going into the gold medal match. We served tough in the last game and it’s definitely one of our strengths”.

Keegan Cook, coach of United States: “Costa Rica has had a wonderful tournament, in the second set they had a nice service-pressure, they didn’t stop playing after a difficult first set, so I give them the credit and our communication was poor. It was a nice response in the third set after I told them it didn’t send a nice message for tomorrow. I believe Puerto Rico is the most improved team in the tournament and if we face them tomorrow, we’ll need to do our best; it’s the match you hope to play in front of the home crowd. These are young teams and they’re learning the difference between expectations and aspirations, certainly many expect a lot from them, but this is just a small step in their careers”.

Keisy Fernández, setter of Costa Rica: “After losing two sets we lost energy. I think the United States had a lot of energy in the third set hence the score difference. Tomorrow we are coming with a good attitude to battle for the bronze medal, we are going to watch the other semifinal to prepare for either one. We want to win a medal for Costa Rica”.

Canada will face Dominican Republic for fifth place

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 13, 2023.- Canada beat the U.S. Virgin Islands in straight sets 25-12, 25-16 and 25-13 to play for fifth place against the Dominican Republic at the Girls’ U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup in Puerto Rico.

Canada presented a different line-up to come out on top mostly from the service line with a 22-5 margin, and leading 23-18 in kills. Both teams scored 4 points from blocks, but Canada limited their errors to 14 against 26.

Canadian opposite hitter Abagayle Guezen scored 10 aces from her 19 points as the leading scorer of the match. Middle blocker Isabella Tehrani tallied 11 points and outside hitter Sophia Hansen added 6 points.

Krystal Eddy ISV and Sophia Magus CAN, battling the ball

Misha Hameed, libero of Canada: “I am very proud of my team, we pulled out a strong win today and we like to continue building on our performances. I am looking forward for tomorrow’s match against the Dominican Republic, we’re looking to push ourselves to a new level and hopefully come out with fifth place”.

Jadyn Webb, libero of U.S. Virgin Islands: “Canada is a great team. Our team has made a couple of changes in the last days of practice, and we have adjusted to them. We are still working on minimizing unforced errors and we’re getting better each day. Tomorrow, we want to commit less errors in serves, clean up serve-receive and put pieces together to come out with a win”.

Dominican Republic will play for fifth place

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 13, 2023.- Dominican Republic will play for the fifth place after defeating Honduras 3-0 (25-9, 25-9, 25-7) of the Girls’ U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup in Puerto Rico.

Crismeily Paniagua, DOM, defense

Marcos Macedo, coach of Dominican Republic: “Tomorrow will be our final, we will come for the best result possible in the tournament which is fifth place. Yesterday against Costa Rica was atypical, they played well and battled a lot, in the end they deserved the victory. Now is the moment to study, look where we committed errors, and learn. All athletes have defeats, and they must learn to improve, maybe without a negative outcome, they couldn’t grow”.

Marvin Ulloa, coach of Honduras: “It was a bad performance; I understand my team being afraid of Dominican Republic because their level has dropped a lot. On the occasions we had control of the ball we were able to attack, we scored aces and we blocked, but they were afraid to receive. I believe we will face the U.S. Virgin Islands tomorrow, they are strong and tall, but with technical deficiencies, if my girls come with energy we can perform well”.

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 12, 2023.- Costa Rica caused a major upset defeating Dominican Republic in five thrilling sets 3-2 (20-25, 28-26, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13) to move into semifinals of the U19 Girls NORCECA Pan American Cup in Puerto Rico.

Angélica Rodriguez of Costa Rica celebrates huge win of Costa Rica over Dominican Republic

Angélica Rodríguez, captain of Costa Rica: “The key to our success today was attitude. We never gave up. We were aware of the great team they are, the good players they have and their prototype, but we never stopped believing in ourselves. I want to thank my team’s effort; I was confident in myself and what I did was transmit that security and confidence to my team”.

Ailyn Liberato, captain of Dominican Republic: “Our game level was too low, because of our excess of confidence. Costa Rica had more desire to win, they wanted to battle more than us, they left all on the court, a respectful opponent”.

Edivaldo Bonilla, coach of Costa Rica: “As the tournament develops, the team is growing and looking better. Maybe from ten matches we play against Dominican Republic me might win one and it was today, a historic win for our volleyball. I want to thank all the coaches who have taught these girls from little, it’s a recognition to their work and today we are enjoying the win. Tomorrow we will face the best team of the area and we will come out to compete”.

Luz Solano, opposite of Mexico: “It’s exciting because it’s what we’ve all been working for and it showed on the court, our enthusiasm, communication, and the desire to keep on battling up to the end. For me, the ups and downs during the match were my nerves of what the game meant”.

Luis Bañuelos, coach of Mexico: “Canada was a great opponent and knew how to take advantage of the opportunities. The positive of the game is the energy of my team, they never dropped their arms and kept on battling. To move into the gold medal match I believe the team needs to focus better on following instructions, in the strategy and the tactical changes. We are going to help them to focus better”.

Taylor De Boer, captain of Canada: “Definitely a tough loss on this one. We all went out with aggression and I really think we fought through it, as well as Mexico; it was a good fight. We have more to give than we let out some moments, but we should be proud of ourselves. We’re still in a warrior mindset, going with whoever we play”.

We are adjusting better as a team for tomorrow’s match which is really important to advance into the next round. Elena García, captain of Puerto Rico: “We worked hard the entire match, we worked under pressure, we united as a team when we needed to, and we did our best. We get going under pressure. Our strength was our attitude as a team, but there’s space to improve our communication”.

Taylor de Boer, captain of Canada: “It’s definitely not the outcome we were hoping for, there were a lot of rollercoaster moments, I guess we’re still figuring out as a team how we can play and work together and this is a test for that. Puerto Rico is a solid team, with a very aggressive attacking technique and I think that really got us, they were not afraid, and we must do the same. We need to play our game and our system”.

Eduardo Galarza, coach of Puerto Rico: “The girls have prepared themselves, our culture in Puerto Rico is to work under pressure; the team performed better when they were pressured. Tomorrow there’s a strong sport rivalry with Dominican Republic, but we are good friends, it will be a good match; we will have a video session to study them, but we must start strong and not be under pressure to perform”.

Christine Biggs, coach of Canada: “Some ups and downs, there are some areas we are hoping to smooth out and clean up as we move forward, but I’m confident we’re going to be a better team next time. We got more to offer in our block-defense, there’s small adjustments to make for tomorrow’s match”.

Dominicans defeat Honduras in their opening match

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 9, 2023.- Dominican Republic defeated Honduras 3-0 (25-10, 25-6, 25-9) in their opening match at the Girls’ U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup at the Dolores Martinez Coliseum in Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico.

Alessandra Hernández, captain of Honduras: “For our level of play, I believe we played well, also this is the first international event for the team. We are young players, and we can continue to learn. We were influenced by nerves”.

Marcos Macedo, coach of Dominican Republic: “Tradition says we are a strong team and we proved on the court. The instructions were for them to play with intensity, with their maximum commitment and they were disciplined, that is what we’re bringing for tomorrow’s match against Puerto Rico, it’s an important match for us”.

Marvin Ulloa, coach of Honduras: “It’s the second occasion that we start against Dominican Republic, it was in 2012 and Gina Mambrú had us down 11-0 on serves. My team started the first set performing well, but they failed in receiving and we couldn’t perform. The few times we received, we responded”.

Mexico debuts winning over Costa Rica

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 9, 2023.- Mexico won 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-15) over Costa Rica in their debut at the Girls’ U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup being held at Dolores Martínez Coliseum in Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico.

Costa Rica surprised Mexico jumping to an 11-8 lead in the first set, but quickly turned things in their favor to earn the win in pool A.

Aime Topete, MEX, attacks

Italia Bernal, captain of Mexico: “We were tense in the beginning, but we got into rhythm on point 11 of the first set, I believe we are ready, and it was only to warm up. I liked the connection we had and the enthusiasm we showed. We hope to keep on winning and with a great attitude”.

Angelica Rodríguez, captain of Costa Rica: “It was an interesting match, we tried to do the best possible for a clean performance. We would have liked to win a set, nevertheless we were close and with a good advantage in the first set, that was very important for our attitude”.

Luis Bañuelos, coach of Mexico: “The entire team was immersed in the game, no matter if the players were starters or came off the bench; they all had the same spirit and the energy to win. The nerves won a bit in the beginning, and we hope it won’t happen again, for several this is their first international experience”.

Edivaldo Bonilla, coach of Costa Rica: “We lacked more aggressiveness, we failed a lot of serves in key moments and that downed the team mentally. We must work on blocking better; we aren’t used to moving around the triple-block in the center at a national level and that damages us at an international level. Tomorrow, we face the strongest team in the tournament (United States) and we will try to solidify some things so our last pool-play match can progress us to the quarterfinal round”.

Calissa Minatee (USA) spikes

Julia Blyashov, United States captain: “We had a lot of fun today, it feels amazing. We were a little bit anxious and worried about showing how the U.S. plays because it’s a big deal to wear the USA jersey. We are figuring out things together. There’s a lot more that we can do, and we were a bit relaxed in the second and third sets. I am super excited to show what the USA is all about”.

Jala Dixon, U.S. Virgin Islands captain:  “We played a great game today; we went out fighting strong and I am so proud of my team. I can’t wait to see what the whole week has for us. We need to be steadier with our service, at the beginning the team was shaky but we progressed as the match developed. Overall, we did great”.

Keegan Cook, United States coach: “In the first and second set we were a little disorganized in serve-receive and a few too many service errors, but when it was good it was really good, and I enjoyed watching some players making their debut. By the end of the tournament the girls will be better in communicating”.

Isaac Raphael, U.S. Virgin Islands coach: “This is the first time ever being in a competition at this level with this age-group and facing USA as a first match was a bit tough. We relaxed a little bit more in the second set and I am not disappointed, we know there’s a lot to work on, it’s a great experience for the girls”.

Kloth and Nuss come back to win Uberlândia Elite16

UBERLANDIA, Brazil, April 30, 2023.- Americans Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss recovered from a first-set loss to celebrate their first victory at an Elite16 event at Praia Clube following their three-set (16-21, 24-22, 15-13) win over Australians Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho in the gold medal match.

This week’s Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event in Uberlândia didn’t start the way Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss planned, but the Americans couldn’t have hoped for a better finish as they stood at the top of the podium in Brazil at the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday.

Brazilians Eduarda ‘Duda’ Lisboa and Ana Patrícia Ramos, who defeated the Americans in their opening match on Thursday, took bronze in front of their home fans.

All Beach Pro Tour Uberlândia Elite16 matches are available on VBTV.

The same resilience the Americans showed to recover from their opening-match loss and advance all the way to the gold medal match was also displayed in the final, as Kloth and Nuss came back from a first-set setback to turn the tables and top the Tokyo Olympic silver medallists in the tiebreaker.

“They’re an incredible team,” Nuss said about their comeback. “We respect them a lot and it’s always fun when we get to play them. One of my bracelets says ‘trust’ and that’s what we did after we lost the first set. We trusted our team and trusted our training. We live in Louisiana, where it’s just as hot and humid as here, so we really felt like we were home. We were feeling good, so it was just about trusting our team.”

The Australians were also the opponents Kloth and Nuss faced when they won their second Beach Pro Tour title, at last year’s Kuşadası Challenge. The two now have four gold medals at the international level, having also won last year’s Coolangatta Futures and the 2023 La Paz Challenge.

“We are absolutely thrilled,” Kloth remarked. “We put everything we had to win each of the matches we played this week. We had so much fun and played in front of an incredible crowd the entire time. We’re obviously on a high right now, but tomorrow we’ll go back and do the same things we’ve been doing. We know the Olympic race is going to be really tight and we have to keep getting stronger.”

Frishman and Caldwell Champions at Aguascalientes

AGUASCALIENTES, Mexico, April 23, 2023.- Chase Frishman and Cody Caldwell won the championship match of the first stage of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour in Aguascalientes in a tie-break 2-1 (14-21, 22-20, 15-7) over the home team of Juan Virgen and Miguel Sarabia.

Chase and Cody had a tough start against powerhouse Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Miguel Sarabia whose energy in the first set kept them off balance.

“In the first set they beat us well and got the crowd going, I was kind of exhausted. Mexico is a very respectful team, Virgen an Olympian and Sarabia super skilled,” said Chase Frishman. “In the second set my partner had a couple of big plays which turned the momentum and could feel his belief which catapulted us; my side-out started to steady out giving me confidence” he added.

For Chase this is his second gold medal, he won in Cuba back in 2018 which is a great comeback to the international tour of NORCECA. As for Cody Caldwell, not only is it his first medal ever, but it’s his first time competing at NORCECA.

Caldwell explained about what they did to turn things in their favor, “Mexico played the first set with a lot of force, and we couldn’t touch them. We changed our strategy, we started serving more aggressively and I slowed down my block, it was the defense strategy that made the difference”.

For Juan Virgen and Miguel Sarabia this is their third silver medal together at NORCECA.

Chase Frishman and Cody Caldwell of United States Aguascalientes Champions

On their way to the gold medal match, Frishman and Caldwell won their semifinal 2-0 (21-14, 21-18) against Canadians Kopp and Chambers. Virgin and Sarabia won the all-Mexican semifinal to Gabriel Cruz and Oziel Aguirre 2-0 (21-15, 21-16).

FIVB Volleyball Empowerment Stirs Domino Effect On Canadian Women’s Volleyball

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, April 13, 2023.- Volleyball Canada President Mark Eckert spoke to FIVB.com on how they are building a successful program with Volleyball Empowerment support.

The Canada women’s national volleyball team has seen considerable improvement in its performance and results on the international stage, with Volleyball Canada President Mark Eckert crediting this success to the sustainable program their National Federation has put in place with valuable support from FIVB Volleyball Empowerment.

“So, you do all those things and you hope that you’d get results, and I’ll be honest: I’m not supposed to say it myself, but everyone in the world saw how well we performed at the World Championship. The VNL was one thing. We were the second-ranked challenger team in the VNL. Our goal was to try and stay in the VNL, so we exceeded those expectations. We had a high finish at the World Championship, and I appreciate the fact that the team were quite angry that they didn’t make it to the next round. So they are starting to change their mindset too.”

Jennifer Cross and Kiera Van Ryk block a shot from VNL 2022’s best scorer Britt Herbots

In 2019, Canada won the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup and earned a promotion to the FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL). In order to ensure the team’s success at the next level, Volleyball Canada applied for support via the world-leading FIVB Volleyball Empowerment program, which aims to empower national teams to reach their full potential.

In 2020, a two-year coach support project via Projects Platform was approved for the Canada women’s national volleyball team, and this was then bolstered by 12 months of targeted support in 2021 and 2022 via Volleyball Empowerment.

The assistance received from Volleyball Empowerment initially helped Volleyball Canada hire Shannon Winzer as full-time head coach of the team a couple of seasons ago. The FIVB’s investment later helped with further staffing costs, including coaching, medical and mental performance specialists as well as technology for athlete monitoring and data assistance. Additionally, the FIVB supported Volleyball Canada with a Gerflor floor, which is now used for major volleyball competitions hosted in the country, including the VNL.

Canada inaugurate their new Gerflor floor with a VNL win over powerful Türkiyein Calgary

Canada finished 14th in its first VNL season in 2021. The following year, the team improved to 12th, leaving three of the challenger teams behind. At the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022, held in the Netherlands and Poland, the team finished third in its first-phase pool to progress to the second phase, where they ended up just below the pool’s cut-off for the quarterfinals, finishing 10th in the final overall rankings of the World Championship. It was Canada’s best-ever result in the history of the competition. Their previous best dated back to the 1974 and the 1982 editions, when they took 11th place. Canada’s standing in the FIVB World Ranking also improved and the team is currently ranked 14th in the world.

“We are a better team. We are not a team that people look at and go let’s just mark that off in our calendar,” said Eckert.

Canadian players celebrate at the 2022 World Championship

Those results meant that Canada could now aim even higher in the future.

“I would say we walked into this thinking it was a long play. We were looking at [the Olympic Games] Los Angeles 2028, and even in my discussions with the Volleyball Empowerment team we were talking about LA, but with the speed at which our performances have improved, there is a real opportunity to go to Paris 2024. We believe we have a real chance to qualify, so our short-term goal is now: go to Paris!”

According to the recent draw for the FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifiers, Canada will compete with hosts China, Czechia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, the Netherlands, Serbia and Ukraine for the two Paris 2024 spots available from Pool A in September. Before that, the Canadians will try to improve further in the VNL as they set off on their third consecutive campaign in the competition.

Alexa Gray in action

“Besides that, our goal is to create a sustainable program that has a better depth of field of athletes, so we have more to choose from and more people fighting for positions. We want our players to be in a program that they want to stay in longer. Typically, prior to Volleyball Empowerment, we had them stay for only one Olympic cycle. Now we’re getting multi-quad athletes staying in the program, which is remarkable for us,” said the Volleyball Canada President.

Most importantly, at Volleyball Canada, Volleyball Empowerment is viewed as the support needed to build a sustainable system of volleyball development with long-term domino effects.

“It was one of our stated goals that getting some money would be a lever for getting us more money. We were successful in getting Olympic solidarity from the Canadian Olympic Committee. Then we got money from another government source, again based on getting money from the FIVB and others. So we started to perform and we got money from a partner called Own The Podium…” explained Eckert. “So it is kind of like a domino effect. When you give a little bit, and a little bit more, more people join in, and there is more opportunity.

“Also, as your team gets better, so your players start getting better pro contracts, so they play in better teams and better leagues, so they get to improve a whole lot more as well…”

All the details of the FIVB’s Volleyball Empowerment and development programs are available through the Data Visualisation Tool that can be accessed here.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, April 4, 2023. – USA Volleyball is proud to announce the 20 athletes selected for the 2023 Girls U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup Roster.

Twelve players from this group will be chosen to compete at the 2023 Girls U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup on May 7-15 in Ciudad de Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico. The team will train April 30-May 6 at the Anaheim National Team Training Center.

Minnesota women’s Head Coach Keegan Cook will serve as the U19 team’s head coach. Krista Hendrickson and Cursty Le Roux will assist Cook.

“We are thrilled to welcome this specific group of athletes to the U19 National Team,” Cook said. “The team training for the Pan American Cup is comprised of a diverse range of ages and national team experience. What they do share for certain is a bright future with USA Volleyball.”

Two players on the 2023 Girls U19 roster return from the 2022 team that won the Girls U19 Pan American Cup and qualified for the 2023 FIVB U19 Girls World Championship: outside hitter Julia Blyashov and setter Izzy Starck. Pools set for U21 men’s, U19 men’s and U19 women’s World Champs

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, March 31, 2023.- The drawing for the FIVB World Championships men’s U21 and U19 age categories, as well as that for the U19 women’s competition were conducted in Lausanne on Friday and were streamed live on the **Volleyball World YouTube channel**.

As for the draw for the U21 women’s tournament will take place in Mexico City on May 12.

U21 Men’s World Championship

The two finalists of the U19 Men’s World Championship two years ago, winners Poland and silver medalists Bulgaria, will clash with each other in a Pool C encounter that is likely to be the most anticipated match in the first phase of this year’s U21 competition in Bahrain.

The 16 teams to compete in the capital Manama from July 7 through 16 were drawn into four round-robin pools of four. All pool winners and pool runners-up will continue the race for the medals in another two pools of four for the second phase of the tournament. The top two teams from those pools will qualify for the semifinals. All teams will continue playing in the competition to determine the final standings in the places from 1st to 16th.

Pool A: Bahrain, Iran, Thailand, Tunisia

Pool B: Italy, Brazil, Egypt, Mexico

Pool C: Poland, Bulgaria, Canada, India

Pool D: Argentina, Belgium, Czechia, United States

U19 Men’s World Championship

The U19 Men’s World Championship will unfold from August 2 through 11 in San Juan, Argentina. 20 teams from all five continents will battle it out to take over the throne from Poland. The representatives of 2021 silver medalists Bulgaria and bronze medalists Iran lead Pools B and C, respectively. Hosts Argentina, who are also reigning South American youth champions from 2022, headline Pool A, while continental runners-up Brazil and incumbent European youth champions Italy will go head to head in Pool D.

The first four teams in the final standings of each pool will move on to the eighth finals to start the direct elimination phase. The remaining four teams, as well as all knockout round losers will keep playing to fix the final standings in all classification positions.

Pool A: Argentina, Egypt, United States, Serbia, Costa Rica

Pool B: Bulgaria, India, Japan, France, Slovenia

Pool C: Iran, Nigeria, Columbia, Puerto Rico, Korea

Pool D: Italy, Brazil, Belgium, Mexico, Chile

U19 Women’s World Championship

Pool D can reasonably be dubbed “the group of death” as representatives of many powerful volleyball nations will take on each other as they try to make it among the top four of the pool and advance to the eighth finals. The pool includes the United States and Serbia, who met in the bronze medal match of the U18 Girls’ World Championship two years ago, but also a few other strong teams that will make the outcome completely unpredictable. The other three pools are also quite impressive, especially Pool C, where 2021 U18 silver medalists Italy will take on mighty Brazil.

The U19 Women’s World Championship will be held in Osijek, Croatia and Szeged, Hungary from August 1 through 11. While the top four teams from each of the four pools will progress to the eighth finals and then hope to keep winning on the way to the final, all 24 participants will continue competing to determine the final standings in the places from 1st to 24th.

Pool A: Hungary, Argentina, Egypt, Cameroon, China, Chile

Pool B: Croatia, Türkiye, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Nigeria, Germany

Pool C: Italy, Brazil, Thailand, Peru, Canada, Bulgaria

Pool D: United States, Serbia, Poland, Mexico, Japan, Korea

Mushtaque Mohammed inducted into Sports Hall of Fame in T&T

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, March 30, 2023.- Mushtaque Mohammed, the former T&T Volleyball Federation President and current president of the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association CAZOVA was inducted into the First Citizens Sport Foundation Hall of Fame in Trinidad and Tobago.

The 60-year-old Mohammed was one of the nine current or former national sports personalities who were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 2022 First Citizens Sports Foundation Awards ceremony themed ‘Passing the Baton’ which was held at MovieTowne, Port-of-Spain, on Sunday.

The winner of the 1993 WITCO Sport Foundation Administrators Award as head of the T&TVF Mohammed, and a member of the Federation International Volleyball (FIVB) Executive said, “this recognition is indeed a humbling and proud experience”.

He added, “When I started in administration it was never to get recognition but to assist the development of the sport, however, being recognized for your contributions is always a good feeling especially when it is from a national perspective”.

The Piparo-born Mohammed added, “Induction into the Hall of fame is a great recognition, and it means that my involvement is now etched into the history of Sports in T&T”.

A Vice President both at the FIVB and North Central American and Caribbean Confederation of Volleyball (NORCECA) Mohammed stated, “I came from a very humble beginning playing sport in my village in Piparo and with the discipline, dedication and the pursuit of excellence, I was able to make this contribution to sport as a volunteer, serving selflessly at all levels to positively impact the youth and our society at large”.

Among his achievements, Mohammed was key to the success of the T&T senior women’s volleyball team’s qualification to two major events, the FIVB Women’s Grand Prix and World Championships, the first time ever in both instances as a result of his assistance to the T&TVF in planning and developmental program which commenced in 2009 and formed the pathway for T&T to qualify for the 2018 FIVB World Championships which was held in Tokyo Japan.

Mohammed was also the pioneer and first president of the National Schools Volleyball Association, which was formed in September 1990, and assisted with organized tournaments in the schools and paved the way for the development of our younger volleyball players to become National players.

The development of sport was trusted upon him in NORCECA in 2001 and since then the sport in the islands and Central America has grown significantly, which led to him being recognized by the FIVB and appointed as President of its Development Commission in 2016.

The FIVB  has trusted the Development Commission on his shoulders since May 2017 and the development of the sport has initiated many new projects to enhance the growth of both volleyball and beach volleyball.

As an official Mohammed has participated as supervisor of numerous multi-sports events such as the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, Pan American Games, NORCECA Tournaments, FIVB World championships, World Cups and three Olympic Games.

Cheng and Hughes continue in spectacular form with Tepic Gold

TEPIC, Mexico, March 26, 2023.- Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes have been a force in the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour since they became partners for the second time in their careers, last November, and the Americans celebrated their fourth title in the last four months on Sunday, at the Tepic Elite16, in Mexico.

The two dropped their first set in the tournament to Brazilians Eduarda ‘Duda’ Lisboa and Ana Patrícia Ramos in the gold medal match at the Amado Nervo Auditorium, but still managed to overcome the reigning world champions in the tie-breaker (21-14, 15-21, 15-10) and stand at the top of the podium. Australians Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho took bronze.

All Beach Pro Tour Tepic Elite16 matches are available on demand on VBTV.

Cheng and Hughes have been nearly unstoppable in their second stint as partners, having won four of the six Beach Pro Tour events they competed at since their reunion, including the 2022 Beach Pro Tour Finals.

Champions also at both the Challenge and the Elite16 tournaments held in Torquay, Australia, last year, the Americans have won 29 of the 33 international beach volleyball matches they played in the last four months.

“It’s been amazing,” Hughes reflected. “I’m so happy to be playing with Kelly and just working with our entire team. We’re putting together the right strategies and working as hard as we can. We have all the support back home and that’s what makes a good team.”

Hughes and Cheng dropped only one set in their campaign in Tepic

After a brief point exchange in the first few plays, Hughes started to make a defensive impact in the match and generated and converted several counterattacks, giving the Americans an 11-7 lead. An ace from her increased their advantage to 13-7 right before the technical timeout. Forcing errors from the Brazilians and maintaining their side out steady, Cheng and Hughes remained in control until the end and won the set 21-14 with a kill from Hughes.

The Brazilians started the second set stronger and jumped ahead at 5-2 with a block from Ana Patrícia on Cheng. The two took a 12-9 lead into the technical timeout and improved their advantage to five points at 15-10 when Cheng made an offensive error. More stable, the South Americans had no issues continuing ahead until the end and tied the gold medal match when Duda put the ball down with a tip to make them win the set 21-15.

Both team’s offences started the tie-breaker in a good rhythm and the Americans got the first break at 6-3, with Cheng blocking Ana Patrícia and Hughes digging the Brazilian blocker and putting the ball down in consecutive plays. A transition kill from Duda and a hitting error from Cheng brought the difference down to a single point at 8-7, but the Americans got back-to-back points to get up 10-7 and secured the title with a block from Cheng that ended the set 15-10.

Clancy and Mariafe stepped on the podium for the second time this season and the fifth in their last six events by taking bronze in Tepic and repeating the finish they got in the season-opening Doha Elite16, held in February.

The Tokyo Olympic silver medalists had to work hard, but downed Italian qualifiers Marta Menegatti and Valentina Gottardi in the tie-breaker (16-21, 21-17, 19-17) to finish third in Mexico.

The Beach Pro Tour continues next week, with a Futures tournament set to take place in Coolangatta Beach, Australia, from Wednesday to Sunday. The next Elite16 event will be played in Uberlândia, Brazil, from April 26-30.

The main draw begins on Thursday, at 9:00 local time (16:00 UTC) and the first 16 pool matches in each gender will be played. By the end of the day, each team will have played a pair of matches in Tepic.

Americans Tri Bourne and Chaim Schalk were among the four men’s teams that succeeded in the men’s qualifier. A new team for the 2023 season, the two are playing in just their second tournament as partners and looking to bounce back from a 19th-place finish last week in La Paz, where they dropped both of their matches.

“Honestly, we didn’t feel at our best out there, but we’re working, we’re a new team,” Schalk remarked. “We’re working through stuff and it was awesome to find that energy and will to make it happen no matter what today. These qualifiers are absolutely gnarly, there are some amazing teams from all over the world here and to get through it was huge for us. We’re hungry and want to make a long run in the tournament.”

The Americans were challenged by a pair of Austrian teams on the qualifier in Tepic, overcoming Martin Ermacora and Philipp Waller in two sets (21-17, 21-15) and Robin Seidl and Moritz Pristauz in the tie-breaker (16-21, 21-19, 15-13).

Kloth and Nuss secure La Paz Challenge title

LA PAZ, Mexico, March 19, 2023.- Second-seeded Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss ended a solid week at the 2023 Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour La Paz Challenge with the gold medals around their necks as the 25-year-old Americans were the winners of the event held in Mexico.

Kloth and Nuss prevailed in the all-American gold medal match against Savvy Simo and Toni Rodriguez, taking their compatriots down in two sets (21-16, 21-13) to claim the title. Brazilians Tainá Bigi and Victoria Lopes finished third in La Paz.

All Beach Pro Tour La Paz Challenge match replays are available on VBTV.

The Americans were strongly challenged by compatriots Simo and Rodriguez at the start of the gold medal match and trailed until the middle of the opening set, when they found their rhythm, took control and never looked back.

“What a battle,” Nuss reflected. “Hats off to our fellow Americans, what a game and what a tournament they had. We got into the final knowing it was going to be a very tough match and only focused on our side of the net. The atmosphere here in La Paz has been absolutely unreal and this is what beach volleyball is about. We loved it.”

Playing in only their second international season, Kloth and Nuss have already secured their third Beach Pro Tour title, following victories at last year’s Kuşadası Challenge, in Türkiye, and Coolangatta Futures, in Australia. The Americans have played in 11 international tournaments together and never finished outside of the top ten.

“It was a very difficult tournament,” Kloth remarked. “There were so many great teams playing and a lot of three-set matches that could really have gone either way. And the fans were amazing, there was such a great turnout to every single match that we played. It was such a fun tournament .”

United States wins back to back NORCECA Boys U19 Pan American title

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, March 18, 2023.- United States beat Mexico 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) to win back to back Boys U19 Pan American title on Saturday in Guatemala City.

United States won their second gold medal in a row undefeated (5-0) against Mexico just like last year; in 2011 they won a bronze medal also over Mexico. This is Mexico’s third silver medal in a row and in 2017 they beat Chile for the gold; Mexico ended the event 4-2.

The U.S. held a 47-33 advantage in attacks and a huge 10-4 margin in blocks; both teams scored two points from serves. United States committed 16 unforced errors against 26 from Mexico.

Sean Kelly (USA) top scorer

Outside hitter Sean Kelly of United States scored a match-high of 16 points on 14 kills and two blocks. Outside hitter Sterling Foley added 12 points on 9 kills, two blocks and one ace, followed by opposite hitter Finn Kearney collecting 11 points on 10 kills and one ace.

Outside hitter Ines Vargas and opposite hitter Julio Serrano topped Mexico’s scores with 12 points each.

Matthew Fuerbringer (USA) head coach

Sean Kelly, top scorer of United States: “I feel amazing being back here in Guatemala, there’s a lot of fans supporting us, it’s awesome to play with the team again and we felt so connected. We could have been better, but a win is a win. I believe our serving and blocking can still improve”.

Matthew Fuerbringer, head coach of United States: “I expected a battle. The change the coach made by putting Vargas (#7) as opposite was really good for his team, gave them a lot of options in offense, they have a great setter with good ball control; they’re such a tough team and they don’t make mistakes and they battled. I am really proud of my boys, there were a lot of tough moments being close and it got intense, they could’ve hesitated but instead they went harder and made the plays that mattered”.

Oscar Viña, head coach of Mexico: “My team battled and battled, but there was a moment when they couldn’t give more, mostly when we reached point 22 in the first two sets they lost energy and in the third at point 18 they couldn’t give more. This happens when you face a powerful team like the United States, we need more elements on the team”.

Puerto Rico battles five sets to win the Bronze Medal

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, March 18, 2023.- Puerto Rico battled five sets against Costa Rica 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12) to win the bronze medal of the NORCECA Boys U19 Pan American Cup on Saturday in Guatemala.

After the five grueling sets, Puerto Rico celebrated their second consecutive bronze medal, third bronze medal in the history of the event. They also won a silver medal in 2011. For Costa Rica, this is the first time a Central American team plays for a place in the podium.

Puerto Rico bounced back from a nail-biting first set loss only to keep on battling strong to stop Costa Rica who performed formidably.

We committed too many errors, in the first set we failed 9 serves, in the second set 7 and not being able to win the first set damaged us. Traveling from Costa Rica our goal was to finish among the first four positions, now we are thinking of reaching the podium”.

Theo Wandel, central de Guatemala: “The team’s concentration wasn’t at its best, we failed in receiving and there was no back row defense, they scored mostly there. We must recover mentally because there are two days of competitions left”.

Oscar Viña, head coach of Mexico: “I made several variations in the second set because I need to know how my bench players perform, I made five changes; I saw the opportunity to do it now thinking that our next matches will be more demanding. I was part of the errors; I take the learning”.

We are now in the semifinals, we are going to give our all and we have a small dispute against Mexico, we want to win if we get to face them”.

Carlos De Sevilla, head coach of Puerto Rico: “We are glad, the boys executed the game plan we practiced today, we felt comfortable compared to other matches. Luis Fernando Castañeda, head coach of Guatemala: “Today was our turn to lose, Puerto Rico plays very well and they adjusted their serves well, complicating our reception. The team battled against one of the powerhouse of the area, but we lack experience and practice matches which in the end affects us. Matthew Fuerbringer, head coach of United States: “After the match I spoke to the team about completing our first stage, completing our goal of 3-0 and winning the stage. Now it’s a lot about recovery, we must be smart to recover and get together to watch some video with the guys so everyone can get better, especially those whose first time on the court was today; get as much time as we can in this day and a half to get ready for the medal round”.

David Córdoba, captain of Costa Rica: “United States is a physical team, they are very structured during the game and I believe they weren’t superior the entire match, we couldn’t take advantage of those moments when they weren’t, we were one or two points of catching up with them Now we wait for the result of the next match”.
