QUOTES

Albert Humes, coach of Belize: “I feel very good; thanks to this victory, we feel more confident for the upcoming matches. I think we had some doubts at the beginning because not the entire team had trained together, but then the players showed what they had trained for, and everything went well”.

Kaelen Ingram, top scorer of Belize: “I feel very good about coming to the tournament; it’s the first time I’ve met the entire team but getting to know each other and seeing what they’ve learned is completely different. Half of the team is in the United States, and the other half is in Belize, but when we play, we do it very well. This was like my first practice with the entire team, but we came with a sharp mindset that we were here for victory”.

Johan Morales, coach of Costa Rica: “We knew about the strength of the Belizean team; historically, they have been like that. There was a work plan that the boys didn’t follow, and for many, as it was their first playing for the national team, nerves got the best of them. Now, we need to correct things because we haven’t lost our chances for medals. It’s only the first game, and we need to focus on tactics and fix the reception, which was terrible today”.

Albert Humes, coach of Belize: “Our expectations are high. Belize is knocking on the door of greatness, of being number one in Central America. Our expectation is to come here and give our best and make our country proud. In fact, we have a fairly young team. We have young players as young as 16, even one who is 15, so most of our players are under 21, some can play in the U19 team and the U17 team. So, we still have a good progression of players for the future greatness of our country”.

Johan Morales, coach of Costa Rica: “We come here with a happy group, very united. We have been working for quite some time, and I believe this is the team I have been able to work with the most because of the time with the boys. We come with young players with a lot of talent and hunger to bring Costa Rica its first gold medal in this category. That’s the goal, to go step by step and steadily. At this age, concentration is crucial, and in the men’s competition, it’s very close, respecting all the opponents, as seen in the Senior Central American Championship”.

Andrea Genova, coach of El Salvador: “We expect to perform well. Our team is not bad; we can fight for a spot on the podium and see if we can get a medal in the competition. We know that everyone has the same goal; it’s a fairly even competition, but some teams stand out more. We will go point by point in each game. It’s the last youth tournament before reaching the senior level, and several athletes are already in the senior national team, which is why the level is very high”.

Reider Lucas, coach of Guatemala: “We want to progress through the event. We know it’s very important because many athletes are part of the senior national teams, and it’s a tournament with a high level in the region. We want our boys to enjoy the competition, continue to develop, and try to achieve the goal match by match, fighting point by point, and having a good competition”.

José Reyes, coach of Honduras: “We have a generation that has had a lot of experience in U19 and U23 tournaments, along with the addition of new young players that we have started to form, with the aspiration of reaching the senior national team. We are happy; we have a renewed group with the desire to do things well, everyone is ready, including the coaching staff, to perform well”.

Jorge Mena, coach of Nicaragua: “We know it’s a tough tournament, and we will try to do our best, but we know that all the teams are strong, and a great tournament awaits us, of a high level. We know our rivals and the level of some countries like Guatemala or Costa Rica, but we are going game by game to see how we can land on the podium and then change the medal, but above all, give our best in each match”.

Eric Lucero, coach of Panama: “We have high expectations, aiming for the podium, as we did years ago. A very good job has been done in forming the national team; we have athletes with good experience in the younger categories. In the U21 category, we managed to get on the podium with a silver medal. We have realized that all the countries in the region are working hard. Volleyball has grown, we have all grown, and we are aiming for the highest level”.

Congratulations to them, even though they did not win, they played a really good match.”

And, Head Coach of the St Vincent and the Grenadines- Eardley Martin was gracious in the defeat, noting that his players gave of their best.

“ The ladies played their hearts out, especially in the fourth set…Throughout the match, we had a serve and receive issue and that affected the setter being able to create any reasonable plays… In short, we made too many simple errors which had our opponents four and five points advantage on us”, Martin reasoned.

He however, expects an improved showing in future matches.

Canada’s Santiago 2023 Beach Volleyball team announced

Although they are still in the first year of their partnership, Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson are one of the top women’s beach teams in the world. Currently seventh in the FIVB World Rankings, they have had a string of Beach Pro Tour top-five finishes in 2023, highlighted by their tournament victory at the Montreal Elite 16 in August. Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson both made their Olympic debuts at Tokyo 2020, with other partners.

“This is special for me in so many ways. I’m grateful the team decided to prioritize representing Canada at the Pan Am Games given the intensity and the rigor of the Olympic qualification schedule,” said Humana-Paredes, who is a member of the Panam Sports Athlete Commission. “Any chance we can get more time playing together will benefit us! And what an opportunity for our team to gain multi-sport Games experience, especially in a setting that will test us in a whole new environment. I’m also the daughter of two Chilean immigrants so this is an incredible moment for my family. This is the first time my Chilean family will be able to watch me play live and the first time I’ve been back in almost a decade. I am already getting butterflies!”

We got a little desperate in the fourth set and that was the difference in there, we started really well but we were not able to keep the advantage.”

USA captures its second win at the Final 6

EDMONTON, CANADA: Sept. 20, 2023. USA defeated Mexico 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-19) at the NORCECA Pan American Cup Men’s Final Six, held September 19 to 24 at the Flair Airlines Hangar (Expo Centre), in Edmonton, Canada.

USA vs Mexico during the Men’s NORCECA Final Six tournament in Edmonton

Jorge Azair, head coach of Mexico: “Today we made a lot of mistakes. Our sideout didn’t produce and our setting was not connecting well with our attacking. But it’s a long tournament, so we put today behind us and look ahead to the next match with the Dominican Republic.”

Jordan Ewert, player #4 USA :  “We came to win today and that’s we did. Serving and passing made the difference – we had a couple of spurts where our serve kind of struggled, but we stayed aggressive and forced them out of system a lot. When they (Mexico) are out of system, we’ve got a good block and defense team, and we were able to get a lot of break points and pull away. We are learning that we are not always clean, but we are getting more comfortable in chaotic situations…. Our goal is to get better as the tournament goes along and be prepared for the finals on Sunday.”

Dan Lewis, head coach of Canada: “I’m happy with the win, but our organization needs to be better. There were a couple of things we needed to do in terms of organization and we weren’t able to execute that well and it opens the door for the opponent. This week we will just try to refine our execution and have discipline. At the international level, we have to be able to execute our plan well.”

Gerardo De Jesus Sanchez, head coach of Puerto Rico: “This is a new group, made up of college students, and we’ve had very little training. Some of them are in school in the United States, and others play in professional leagues. For a first game, we performed quite well against a Canadian team that is well-trained.”

But day after day we will try to improve our performance each match…  Every match for us will be a different story – to improve our performance, our level, and minimize our mistakes.”

Patrick Gasman, captain of the USA: “It’s our first match with this group, we’ve only been together for about three weeks. This was a great first test for us to come out and play as a team and within our system.”

Men’s Final 6 kicks off with a five-setter

EDMONTON, CANADA. Sept. 19, 2023: Cuba and Mexico needed a tie-break set to decide the opening match of the NORCECA Pan American Cup Men’s Final Six Cup, held September 19 to 24 at the Flair Airlines Hangar, at the Edmonton Expo Centre in Alberta

Despite a strong start, the young Cuban team fell to Mexico 2-3 (26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 17-25, 8-15) in a roller-coaster of a match today.

Cuban Alejandro MIguel Gonzalez led all scoring with 33 points; Mexico’s Josué López Rios was top scorer for the winning side with 25 points (including six from the service line).

Cuba led in attack points (60-49), but Mexico led in blocking (11-7), serving (12-5) and made fewer errors.

Match action Mexico vs Cuba

Manuel Espinosa, head coach of Cuba:  “The match for us was with highs and lows because in reality our team could have done a better job after we have won the first two sets and when Mexico changed the game we got a little bit frustrated and we couldn’t get ahead at the moment, but tactically we didn’t do what we were supposed to do as per our technical meeting, we had a lot of errors (39) that at the end lead us to our defeat.”

Jorge Azair, head coach of Mexico: “We started off good; and then it went badly – our sideout was not good in the first and second set. But we made some substitutions – and my team worked well in the third, fourth and fifth set. It’s a young team and for me it’s important that they are calm and motivated. It’s good experience for them.”

Dominica outlasts British Virgin Islands

ROSEAU, DOMINICA. Sept. 19, 2023: Dominica recorded a hard-fought 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-14, 25-19) win over the British Virgin Islands in match two of Pool B, in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association( ECVA) Under-23 Women’s Championship, here at the Massacre Indoor Facility.

Buoyed by home support, Dominica stayed ahead of their opponents in the first set, however, the British Virgin Islands regrouped to take the second.

Dominica readjusted their tactics employing more hitting across the court, much to their benefit in the next two sets.

In his assessment of his team’s win, Dominica’s Head Coach- Albert Loblack was happy with the showing of his charges.

“It was a good win for us… We really wanted to win in three straight sets, but we gave up a set, however, there were lots of positives that we came away with”, Loblack commented.

He thought that his team’s involvement in previous tournaments helped in the overall preparations for the Under-23 championships.

Loblack’s opposite number- Stephen Payne, thought his players gave up crucial points at critical stages of the match, hence their defeat.

“Our girls allowed the match to slip through their hands, by committing too many unforced errors”, Payne related.

Undaunting by the loss to Dominica, Payne expects the British Virgin Islands to reassess the first match and return stronger in their second.

Match three is in Pool A features St Vincent and the Grenadines against St Maarten.

St Lucia stops Antigua in straight sets

ROSEAU, DOMINICA. Sept. 19, 2023: St Lucia registered a 3-0( 25-17, 25- 9, 27-25) win over Antigua and Barbuda, in the opening match of the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association( ECVA) Under-23 Women’s Championships, here at the Massacre Indoor Facility.

Playing in Pool A of the championships, St Lucia started positively, hence won the first two sets with relative ease, but had to dig deep to avoid an extension of the match, as the Antiguans made a fight of it in the third set.

Both teams’ Head Coaches and Captains, gave their assessments of the match.

Stuart Albert- Head Coach of St Lucia  : “It was a good win, which definitely has boosted our morale… We have five players who are playing at this level for the first time… Am glad for the win, although, so we had to dig deep in the third set, but we came out victorious”.

Amalia Louis – Captain of St Lucia: “ I believe we played a good game… We were hungry for the win… We needed the win just to start us off strong, even though we felt a little pressure in the third set”.

Rosemarie Simon- Coach of Antigua: “I am not totally disappointed in the ladies…I think they played really hard in the first set…The opposing team changed their line up in the second set so we had to make some adjustments, but our main hitter got hurt so we also had to make another adjustment and that affected the team a bit … All in all, I am proud of the ladies”.

Jassania Joseph- Captain of Antigua: “ Despite the loss, I am very proud of my team… We came here with the mentally, so we played hard, but St Lucia played a little better”.

Match two features Dominica versus the British Virgin Islands in Pool B.

Coaches optimistic ahead of Pan American Cup Final Six

EDMONTON, Canada, September 18, 2023.- Ahead of the third edition of the NORCECA Pan American Cup Men’s Final Six Cup, September 19 to 24 at the Flair Airlines Hangar, in Edmonton, Canada, the teams’ head coaches spoke about their expectations for this tournament.

Manuel Espinosa, head coach of Cuba:  “The expectations for this tournament are, first and foremost, the development of these athletes who, for some time now, have been able to show the talents we have in Cuba and this competition is a great opportunity to do so.”

Gerardo de Jesus Sanchez, head coach of Puerto Rico: “We come with a young team, mainly from the U.S. colleges, and we want to give many Puerto Rican players the opportunity to develop for the future of the national team.”

Jorge Azair, head coach of Mexico: “Principally, we are preparing for the Olympic Qualification Tournament, which is coming up in China. And we are trying some newer players on the Mexican team. Some players are already in Europe, but we have eight players here that will be with us at the Olympic qualifier.”

Dan Lewis, head coach of Canada: “It’s an interesting tournament because most teams are different combinations, so there are a lot of new faces out there and in that sense you don’t have a ton of time to prepare. There is going to be a lot of adaptation during each game, so it’s a heavy cognitive load for the guys.  … This is half of our Next Gen and half of the U21 squads, so even our guys have not played together as a team that much.  It makes it interesting, but of course, as soon as the whistle blows and the balls start flying, we are going to want to win.”

Alexander Gutierrez, head coach of Dominican Republic: “We have brought a very young team here that are looking for more experience. We’ve worked day after day to improve our level, but this tournament for us is about getting experience more than results. We have six players who are under 20 years old and several U23 players. Our senior team is preparing for the Pan American Games.”

Andy Read, head coach of USA, “We’re looking forward to this NORCECA tournament. We’ve brought a mix of younger guys and some of our older guys. I think it will be a great opportunity for some of the rising stars of NORCECA to shine, and hopefully for USA to play a great tournament.”

I am infinitely thankful to God for my health, for allowing me to play for almost 17 years with the national team, which makes me proud. I am happy to have ended my indoor volleyball career with this group of warriors; that’s what they are, and now it’s time to celebrate”.

Adriana Flores, captain of El Salvador: “We had the opportunity to win the game 3-0, but the coach wanted to give the girls who will be in the under 23 team in the coming months in El Salvador a chance and measure their level. Unfortunately, we couldn’t win that set, but in the next one, we managed to recover our rhythm. Obviously, you always want more, but overall, we had good matches and a good performance, especially considering it’s a young team with a bright future”.

Maria Jiménez Hunter, top scorer El Salvador: “I’m happy to contribute to my team’s victory and motivated for the next tournament. I think it was a good tournament; there were many surprises, teams that weren’t high in the rankings managed to stand out. It was quite an interesting tournament”.

Kevanna Sebastian, vision problems don’t stop her from playing volleyball

Managua, Nicaragua, September 12, 2023 – Kevanna Sebastian, a player from Belize, has become an internet sensation due to her use of sunglasses during the XXII AFECAVOL Women’s Central American Volleyball Cup in Nicaragua.

Born in 1998 (25 years old), has already played more than 40 matches with the Belize national team, but it’s during this competition that she has attracted attention for a particular accessory she uses while playing.

It’s her eye-catching sunglasses that she wears due to a vision problem, making the Belizean middle blocker the talk of volleyball forums and even on Volleyball World social media.

“I have a curve in my right eye. My left eye is stronger. My eyes are very sensitive to bright lights; they give me headaches that lead to migraines. I have trouble driving at night with bright car lights, and my glasses adjust to the light’s brightness to protect my eyes.”

Kevanna Sebastian of Belize

“I started wearing glasses in 2018, but they were regular ones. My vision worsened, and my eyes are very sensitive. If I’m not wearing my glasses, I get a headache, and after that, it turns into a migraine, and then I can’t do anything. What my glasses do is remove the glare and bright light, simply.”

Due to this condition, the use of these glasses had to be evaluated by the event’s medical committee, and they approved their use during the Central American Championship, without imagining that this would set a precedent in the history of international volleyball.

“It’s not a luxury, they’re just glasses, but they are medical prescription. I received them a couple of months ago; before that, I only had glasses for bright light. About three months ago, I started using them. While I was playing, bright light used to affect me a lot; if it hit my eyes directly, I couldn’t see. But now I have no problems, and it doesn’t affect my play; they are comfortable, and there’s no issue in using them.”

Kevanna is aware of the effects of her condition, but that doesn’t stop her from representing her country and motivating the younger generations. Thanks to her new glasses, she can continue playing without any side effects.

William Fernández, coach of Guatemala: “Psychologically, it’s good to finish with a victory. We didn’t meet the goal we had set, without blaming the youth of the athletes, but it’s something to consider. If they stay together, they will achieve good results in the future. They worked well yesterday, as well as today. We had many sets where we didn’t close, like yesterday when we were leading 10-5 (against Nicaragua in the fifth set), but we lacked confidence”.

María Santa Cruz, outside hitter of Guatemala: “Honestly, I’m relieved. I was able to make my serve, but I didn’t have it at the beginning of the tournament until the game against Costa Rica, where I managed to figure out where and how to do it. I’m satisfied with myself and the work we’ve been doing. Also, I didn’t know I had made so many “aces”.  I think overall we were a bit unfocused and couldn’t come together, work as a team properly. It’s a shame that we only achieved it at the end, but we are satisfied with our performance”.

Erik Shoji #22 of the United States celebrates a point

U.S. Head Coach John Speraw: “I thought we served the ball quite well and put a lot of pressure on them. Conversely, I think they are a team that can serve really well. They probably had more errors than they had on Saturday. But when they ripped it, we did a great job of passing. Besides the first few points of the first set when they got some aces, I thought we did a really good job of passing.”

Canada Head Coach Tuomas Sammelvuo: “I think we need a little time to analyze. We were in the final, which is good. Today, USA was very strong. But we could have done a lot better. We lost the game in service and passing. In that game inside the game, USA was better. But they were not receiving so great. We couldn’t stop the speed of their offense and we were struggling with our attacking…. We’ll analyze this tournament, get back to work and get ready for the Olympic qualification. I want to thank all the players and the staff members. They gave their very best for this tournament. Thanks for the organization of the tournament.”

The Dominican Republic is an opponent we know very well; we have faced them countless times, and at times, the matches have been more intense with greater rivalry. Our players showed the determination that was necessary in this type of competition. Against the Dominican Republic, we made a difference, although it wasn’t with the level of rivalry we would have preferred, but we played our game with the performance required to win the bronze medal.”

Dominican Republic Coach Jose Gutierrez Sanchez: “We’ve been so happy about the result. We know we have to work a lot because the job is just beginning. It’s OK for us. We have a young team and we have to continue to work more and more.”

Marcos Sugiyama, coach of Honduras: “Panama’s approach is very strong, and we let our guard down, which is something we cannot do. We were playing at a high level of volleyball, and we let our guard down, which caused us many problems. It’s necessary to fight, despite fatigue, and we got the victory. Tomorrow, we face another battle, and the truth is that every day feels like a final. The girls’ reaction today was good because it’s not easy to always play from behind on the scoreboard and come back to win”.

Andrea Zuñiga, libero of Honduras: “I think we came in a bit overconfident; it was noticeable that Panama was eager to win. They played a great game, defending and attacking everything. I think it was a very tough game, and I felt bad at one point due to the heat and pressure, but my teammate came in and did a great job as well. José Fontes, coach of Belize: “To be honest, I’m not very happy with the game; there are things we need to improve, and today we weren’t very effective. We also gave playing time to some non-regular players; our main setter is injured, and we wanted to see if she was fit to continue in the tournament. We need to keep improving to have more options in the tournament”.

Clara Sabal, libero of Belize: “I feel like we fought hard, and I’m glad that we were able to close the match in the end. We made many minor mistakes between the sets, but I’m glad that our team could come together and finish with the victory. I think we underestimated Panama, and that tends to happen a lot, so it was good that we decided to work hard, and I think our defense and reception were the best”.

Jenny Madrid, coach of Panama: “This is a process in which we go step by step, and we have made progress. We lack preparation and exposure, and as we progress in the tournament, we will improve. Today, we made some adjustments, and they worked; we kept the opponent under control, but in the closings, we couldn’t make the points”.

Tamara Espinoza, standout player for Costa Rica: “I’m very happy to contribute to my team; we are quite united. All the effort is not luck, it’s not a coincidence; it’s pure determination and effort that we’ve given throughout the year. I hope to keep improving for my team and because of my team. We are fortunate to have several players who, no matter what, will contribute on the court”.

Pablo Acuña, coach of Costa Rica: “The good thing about a team is that we all complement each other, and everyone adds to the team, but it was a very difficult match. El Salvador played very well; they taught us not to enter passively against any opponent. If there was something we had to learn today, it is very clear to us”.

Carmen Chávez, libero of El Salvador: “We always play with our hearts; every game we go in with the expectation of winning it. We put in the effort to obtain each victory, and that leads us to improve our attitude and show determination. We all contribute together, and each one does what we must do on the court. For us, losing 1-3 doesn’t disappoint us that much because Costa Rica is a great rival, and we hadn’t won a set against them in a long time”.

In the first set, we were able to give opportunities to players who have hardly played in this tournament, we kept them on the court even though the score was close because they need to gain responsibility while performing.”

René Quintana, coach of Nicaragua: “It’s always good to start with a win. We played against a Panama team that pushed us to tighten up at times, but the important thing is that we came out with the victory. I believe that in some parts of the game, the girls adapted to the opponent’s style of play, and that’s not good. We used the technical timeouts to make some adjustments, and they reacted positively”.

Erica Calero, captain of Nicaragua: “I think there are many things to tune up as the tournament progresses, but tomorrow, we have a tougher match (against Costa Rica). One key is to communicate a bit more because sometimes during the game, we lack that support and encouragement that we all need to give each other”.

Jenny Madrid, coach of Panama: “This is a team that is starting a process with a mix of veterans and under-23 juniors, and it will take some time to blend and achieve our objectives. It has been a couple of long days, and the idea is that as the tournament goes on, we will improve, especially in the technical aspect”.

Hashlyn Cuero, captain of Panama: “It was a long journey we made, but despite that, we came here very willing to compete. We are clear about the work we came to do here. As the days go by, we hope to improve because it’s a young team, and we have some experienced players”.

We knew how to play against Guatemala; we implemented the strategies planned by our coaches, and that helped us secure a convincing 3-0 win”.

Julio Dominguez, Guatemala’s assistant coach: “We faced a very strong and experienced opponent today, and our team didn’t come out with the right attitude. Our tactics and strategy didn’t produce any results, so we hope to transform what happened today. In these short tournaments, anything can happen”.

QUOTES

Pablo Acuña, coach of Costa Rica: “It was a tough start, we had a long trip yesterday, we didn’t find our rhythm as we arrived a bit late, so it was normal for them to start a bit timid, out of sync, somewhat inconsistent. But with each set, we improved, and the bench players, the best ones, started to adapt and did very well”.

Marcela Araya, captain of Costa Rica: “First of all, I want to thank God for the opportunity to be here. I’m very happy to be with my teammates. I think it was a very good game. It’s always challenging to adjust in the first match, to break the ice. I feel good, happy, and I believe the team did a good job, both the players on the court and those on the bench did very well, and that was crucial because we all are important for winning”.

José Fontes, coach of Belize: “In a way, I’m satisfied because the first game is always complicated, especially against a team like Costa Rica. Although they made too many unforced errors, it allowed us to maintain some balance until point 16. However, we couldn’t close out the match, and they deserved the victory”.

Nelissa Ramírez, captain of Belize: “I feel good. I think the first part was challenging because we had to break the ice, and the girls were nervous. I feel we played very hard, fought, and towards the end we lost energy, but at some point, we could have regained our momentum, but it didn’t happen”.

Cuba improved 2-0 at the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Sept. 6, 2023) – Cuba improved to 2-0 at the NORCECA Men’s Senior Continental Championship with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-23) sweep of Suriname on Wednesday at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.

Cuba hopes to sweep the pool by beating the United States in the teams’ final pool play match on Thursday.

Cuba led Suriname in attacks (45-29), blocks (7-3) and aces (7-1). Suriname scored 20 points on Cuba’s errors and gave up 14.

Cuba outside hitters Osniel Mergarejo and Jose Miguel Gutierrez Suarez each finished with 14 points. Mergarejo scored on a match-high 12 attacks, one block and one ace. Suarez scored on eight attacks, two blocks and a match-high four aces.

Cuba’s Alain Gorguet receives

Cuba Coach Jesus Angel Cruz Lopez: “In this second match of the event, we gave some of the athletes on the bench the opportunity to play so that everyone could have participation and be ready for tomorrow’s match against the United States, which determines the first place in the group. We made it our mission to ensure that everyone had some playing time because we don’t know who will be called upon tomorrow. It took a toll on us that many of these young players, despite having played in the VNL, hadn’t played much. Some of them participated in the Central American Games, but many haven’t played a full match in a tournament, and that’s why we saw some errors. Additionally, we still struggle with adapting to the opposing team’s style of play and can’t maintain our game throughout the entire match. Today, after a very good first set with few mistakes, we started making errors in the second and third sets, therefore the contrast in the score.”

Suriname Coach Carlos Orta Fellove: “Yesterday, I was happy when we played the American team. But today, I am happier. We almost won the second set. We were leading the second set. We are playing against big teams. What can I say? I am so proud of my team. I am so happy. I wanted to win at least one set and it was close.”

USA Sweeps Suriname to Open NORCECA Championship

CHARLESTON, West Virginia, USA (Sept. 5, 2023) – The United States opened its campaign at the 2023 NORCECA Men’s Senior Continental Championship with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-10) pool play victory over Suriname on Tuesday at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

Four U.S. players scored in double figures led by opposite Jake Hanes who totaled 14 points on 13 attacks and one ace. U.S. middle blocker Jeff Jendryk added 11 points on eight kills and a match-high three blocks.

Outside hitter Garrett Muagututia scored 11 points and outside Thomas Jaeschke had 10.

Suriname outside hitter Keven Sporkslede led his team with seven points on seven attacks.

United States after beating Suriname

USA Head Coach John Speraw: “It was nice to start this NORCECA tournament with a great win. I thought it was great experience for (setter) Micah Ma’a and Jake Hanes and (libero) Tim McIntosh playing his first match (for the senior U.S. Men’s Team). It was an exciting moment for them. We’ve been working on a lot of aspects of our game over the past month… It was a good opportunity for us to get out there and get a feel for the gym. Now we will look forward to playing Puerto Rico tomorrow.”

USA opposite Jake Hanes: “It’s always fun, especially at home with a U.S. crowd. You only get a couple opportunities like this every few years, so you have to take advantage of it.”

Suriname Head Coach Carlos Orta Fellove: “The first set, I was happy because we scored at least 14 points for the first time in my life against the USA. They played well. I think they learned a lot today. The American team is very good… I am happy with the way my players played, but the more important thing is that they learned.”

Cuba middle blocker Roamy Alonso had five blocks and Puerto Rico outside hitter Klistan Lawrence had four.

Head Coach of Cuba, Jose Angel Cruz:  “A first game is important to start with a victory. Puerto Rico is an opponent we already know; we have played several tournaments against them. The first victory is always important. It’s good to start any tournament with a win.”

Canada won over Dominican Republic to start the Men’s Continental Championship

CHARLESTON, West Virginia, USA (Sept. 5, 2023) – Canada got the 2023 NORCECA Senior Men’s Continental Championship off to a fast start with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-12) pool play win over the Dominican Republic on Tuesday at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.

Canada dominated the match, leading in attacks (39-17), blocks (15-0) and aces (6-2).

Canada had the match’s top four scorers, led by outside hitter Stephen Marr who finished with 14 points on a match-high 11 attacks, two blocks and one ace. Opposite Arthur Szwarc added 10 points on seven kills and three blocks.

Adrian Figueroa paced the Dominican Republic with seven points on seven attacks.

Stephen Maar (CAN) spikes against Dominican Republic

Canada Head Coach Tuomas Sammelvuo: “It’s important to start with a win. I will take the focus and the concentration (away from the match). No matter the score, we were very focused and concentrated. Even if we were leading by a lot of points, it didn’t affect our focus on our own game.”

Canada Captain Nick Hoag: “We try to focus on our side, regardless of who’s on the other side. That’s what we are going to try to do the whole game, especially to get ready for the Olympic qualifier. The big thing we took from this game is if we lower our mistakes, we should be good, so serving a lot of variations and making them play. Our defense is going to do the rest of the job and that’s what we did today. I thought we communicated really well. We stuck to the game plan and if someone got out of the game plan, we got them back right away.”

Dominican Republic Head Coach Jose Gutierrez Sanchez: “It was a very hard match for us. We know it. Canada is a very good team. We have a young team for the future. They pushed our service reception and we made many mistakes. When you have a young team, this happens.”

Seven teams ready to compete at the 2023 NORCECA Senior Men’s Continent Championship

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Sept. 4, 2023).-  Seven teams are ready and excited to compete at the 2023 NORCECA Senior Men’s Continental Championship on Sept. 5-10 at the Charleson Coliseum and Convention Center.

Canada Head Coach Tuomas Sammelvuo: “I have no idea how we will do. We are well prepared. That is the main thing. Every game will be a story in itself. We have done a very big load of work during this preparation. Now, all our thoughts have to be here, not at the Olympic qualifiers. We are happy to be here. I personally am happy to be here to see something that I haven’t seen. It is important to focus on one game at a time and, inside the game, one rally at a time. We would like to grow up during the tournament. On the court, I hope we can see the things that we have been working on.”

Cuba Head Coach Jesus Angel Cruz Lopez: “This is a very important tournament as it grants points for the world ranking. We all know that countries are in the fight for Olympic qualification, and this is an opportunity to earn points and move up in the ranking. That’s why most of the teams are here with their A-team, as we’ve seen in the European and South American tournaments.”

Dominican Republic Head Coach Jose Gutierrez Sanchez: “It is a great pleasure for us to be here. We are clear that this tournament has three levels: USA, Canada and Cuba are in the first level. The second level is Mexico, Puerto Rico and us. The other level is Suriname. The competition for us is trying to play our best and, if possible, to beat Mexico and Puerto Rico. For us, that is the main goal.” –

Mexico Head Coach Jorge Azair: “Our team is young. For us, this tournament is for experience, and we will try to get points for future tournaments.”

Puerto Rico Head Coach Oswald Ontonetti Cameron: “We brought a younger team. We think they are talented. It’s going to be a tough competition. We know that every team brought their best team. Hopefully we will keep improving with every point of every match.”

Suriname Head Coach Carlos Orta Fellove: “It’s a pleasure to participate in the tournament. Suriname volleyball is coming up and growing now. It is always difficult to play teams like Canada and Cuba. We are going to try. We are going to play hard. We are going to show all the teams here that Suriname is improving. We won the Caribbean Cup, which allowed us to come to this tournament. We are going to do our best to win at least one set. I think if we play hard, we have a chance to win one or two sets. I expect all the players to play well, because the most important thing is that we reach at least this level. Cuba, Mexico and USA, they started like us and now they are at the top. I hope Suriname one day will also be at the top.”

U.S. Head Coach John Speraw: “We’re very excited after a month of training and after VNL and some time off to get back into competitive mode. We’ve made some nice improvements over the last month. The team has been focused and intentional about the time that we have, which is very rare, so I think it was valuable. The team is focused on Suriname, which is a team we don’t know very much about. We’re going to go out and try to use this moment to not only win this tournament but prepare for the Olympic qualifier. So it’s a good test to see how much we’ve improved over the last month and get a nice opportunity to see if we can win the NORCECA championship.”

This is Dominican Republic fourth gold medal in the history of the event and third consecutive one (2009, 2019, 2021, 2023).

After beating Canada in the semis yesterday, the “Reinas Del Caribe” excited the crowd coming back after a poor showing in the first set against the reigning Olympic gold medalists, only to win the second. Jordan Thompson led all scoring with 21 points – 17 from attack, 3 blocks, and a serve. Brayelin Martinez contributed 20 points – 18 from attack, and 2 blocks.

Both teams now enter the Olympic Qualification tournaments later this month.

Canada won bronze over Cuba earlier in the day.

Brenda Castillo of Dominican Republic MVP

Marcos Kwiek, head coach of Dominican Republic:  “We are very happy about the victory, for having achieved our goal. We prepared for this tournament, which was very important to us. We started the game poorly, they put a lot of pressure on us, but we managed to turn the match around by playing with a lot of discipline, and that was the best part. A 3-2 game was a spectacle for the crowd, very exciting, the defense played very well, and we delivered.”

Brenda Castillo, MVP from Dominican Republic: “I am very happy about this great victory. We truly played as a team, and that’s what helped us. I am very pleased with the big win against this team, which is the A team of the United States. Thanks to the crowd, wherever we go, there are always many lovely people who support us, many blessings to them.”

Karch Kiraly, head coach de Estados Unidos:  “Congratulations to the Dominican, they made some nice adjustments (after losing the first set). They played a great game – an exceptional game for them and the gold medal. I’m disappointed to be on the losing end of that. Dominican is a quality team and they showed it especially after the first game tonight. They threw more at us than we could handle.”

Canada wins the bronze at the Women’s Continental Championship

QUEBEC CITY, CANADA. September 03, 2023:   Canada pleased its sold-out home crowd today, winning the bronze medal 3-1(25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-16) over Cuba on the final day of the 2023 NORCECA Senior Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship at the PEPS’ Amphithéatre Desjardins-Université Laval.

Canada’s offense produced 53 attack points, compared with 47 for Cuba; dominated in blocking (16-8). Cuba led in service aces 7-5 and errors were 17-18 in Canada’s favor.

Kiera Van Ryk of Canada again led all scoring with 24 points; followed by teammates Jazmine White (14, including 6 blocks), Hilary Howe (10) and Emily Maglio (10).

Greisy Fine led Cuba in scoring with 16 points.  Cuba finishes fourth overall.

Team Canada Kiera Van Ryk digs the ball against Cuba

Shannon Winzer, head coach of Canada:  “I thought the third set was messy, but while we struggled again with first contact in the first two sets, we showed some patience. We know that we are a physical team, compared with Cuba, and we really wanted to show that today. It wasn’t the cleanest volleyball we have played this week, but we did what we had to do to pull off the win. I think it was a real team effort today.

This is preparation for the Olympic qualifier – we wanted to try out some subs in a few different situations and we wanted to try out different lineups and starting rotations. Coming away top three in NORCECA is excellent, but it’s also good preparation. We had a chance to play the Dominican team, who we will face again in China, and we had a good showing against them and learned a lot.”

Hilary Howe, player of Canada: “We went into this tournament really wanting to gun for the final; so the bronze-medal match is always challenging when you want to be in the final. But I’m proud that pulled it together and did the best we could to get the medal and finish strong in the tournament.  It was good for us to come together and compete again before the Olympic Qualifier.”

Osmani García, head coach of Cuba: “It was a match that was defined by anxiety. The inexperience of some players led to anxiety during the game, but we believe that we are still progressing as a team. We won a set and in all of them, we were ahead of Canada, but we couldn’t maintain the lead due to the pressure of competing for a medal; dominating this pressure can only be achieved through playing, having competitive experience, and not just training. We still have many things to work on with this young team, and we have high hopes for continuing to elevate Cuban women’s volleyball.”

St. Lucia reigns as ECVA U19 male Beach Volleyball Champs

Basseterre St. Kitts, September 03, 2023.- St. Lucia duo of Peter and Rio poured in a sterling performance in the finals of the ECVA U 19 competition beach Volleyball. Their opponents were the home team pair of Vikash and Bristol and despite having the support of a small but noisy home crowd they could not find answers to the power and control of Rio in particular.

In the first set, St. Lucia took an early and extended it bigger and bigger as the game went on.  The set ended with St. Kitts and Nevis on 10 points.

A similar pattern started in the second set but this time St. Kitts and Nevis gave a spirited fight back. They were down 0-7 but pulled the score back to within 1 (8-9)

However, that’s the closest they got  as St. Lucia increased their lead once again  and then secured the game at 21-14

Rick Swann coach of the St. Kitts and Nevis team: “I am a bit disappointed in the result but extremely proud of the guys. They showed that they have the ability to fight against tough conditions. This was shown particularly in the second set when they went toe to point with St. Lucia. They (St. Lucia) are a very strong team. Rio is amazing. In order to win we needed to get him off of his game we were not able to do that and so he literally controlled most of the game. This means that we have a lot more work to do and look forward to more battles over the years to come”.

Sheldon Nicholas Coach of St. Lucia: “The guys were able to continue the energy they picked up in the semi-final hence garnering the energy in the finals was easier. We just kept our composure and controlled the game from there. Winning the finals was a great result for us. We will continue to do some more technical work with Peter in particular but at the moment he is pretty solid we have areas to work on including teamwork and communication”.

Earlier, Dominica was able to take Bronze over Grenada in straight sets thereby relegating Grenada to fourth place.

The final places are as follows:-

1. St. Lucia  2. St. Kitts and Nevis 3. Dominica 4. Grenada 5. Anguilla 6. Bermuda 7 St. Vincent  8. Antigua 9. BVI

Dominica takes top spot in ECVA U19 female Beach Tournament

Basseterre, St. Kitts, Sept 03:-Dominica defeated Antigua and Barbuda in straight sets 21 18 21 15 in the finals of the female U-19 beach volleyball competition.

The victory was achieved in a workman-like manner. The pair of Edmund and Bully were the smallest physically in the entire tournament but they had the biggest heart and wore down the opponents with their tenacity

On the opposite side, Carr and Joseph of Antigua came into finals as somewhat the favourites and were given a shock as Bully and Edmund stuck to their guns.

Yahn Joseph Florent Coach of Dominica: “I am over the moon right now, I am just super happy with my girls right now. They are the shortest in the competition and everyone doubted them but it goes to show that height does not win volleyball. It was down to our serving, passing, and communicating with one another and being able to trust one another”.

Coach Olsen Joseph of Antigua:  “My girls fell into the trap of playing to match the style of the opponents and what is worse they were becoming annoyed and frustrated with themselves and as a result their game fell apart. I trust that this motivates them to come and work harder for the next event coming up”.

Earlier in the day, Anguilla took the third spot in a come-from-behind victory over Grenada ( 19-21, 21-18 and 15-8). Grenada missed out on the medal podium and had to settle for 4th.

The overall seeding at the end of the tournament is as follows

1. Dominica  2. Antigua 3. Anguilla 4. Grenada 5. St. Lucia 6 St. Vincent 7. BVI 8. Bermuda

Puerto Rico is sixth at the Continental Championship

QUEBEC CITY, CANADA. Sept. 03, 2023: Puerto Rico capped off the 2023 NORCECA Senior Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship in Quebec with a win and sixth place overall.

Puerto Rico defeated Costa Rica 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 25-9) today in the classification for places six and seven.

Outside hitter Paola Santiago of Puerto Rico led all scoring with 19 points – 15 attack points, 2 blocks and 2 ace serves.

Puerto Rico dominated in all skills – attack 34-14, blocks 18-2, aces 6-1 and gained 17 points from Costa Rican errors (compared with 12 errors on the winning team’s side).

Puerto Rico celebrates a point against Costa Rica

Player Paola Santiago of Puerto Rico : “We knew the NORCECA tournament was going to be a tough tournament for us – we knew were going to face the United States, Canada, Dominican Republic, really high-level volleyball teams. We came in with a winning attitude, but it wasn’t what we expected. I’m glad we ended on a good note as we are getting ready for the Paris 2024 tournament. This is the highest-level competition that we’ve faced this summer.”

Fernando Morales, head coach of Puerto Rico : “It was good to end this tournament on a high note. We have the Olympic qualification tournament (in Japan) coming up soon. So hopefully we can get back to training to prepare for that tournament. … We will have a couple more players in Japan, so we feel thiswas good preparation for the players here.”

Jose Miguel Brinceño, head coach of Costa Rica: “We came to this Norceca Championship with a team of young players, some with experience. During the tournament, we faced very tough matches against the United States, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and today against Puerto Rico, all of which pushed us to our limits. We believe that we improved as the tournament went on. At times, our serving improved, and we were able to put pressure some teams with our serves, but blocking remained a constant challenge due to the strong attacks from our opponents. However, the learning was that we can compete at times against top teams, considering that our main strength was good defense, a lot of courage in those second-ball plays. We hope to continue participating in these tournaments to keep learning and improving.”
