CHITRÉ, Panama, October 10, 2024. – The seven Central American countries are aiming for a medal at the AFECAVOL U21 Men’s Championship, set to take place from October 11 to 17 at the Papa Francisco Gymnasium in Chitré, Panama.
In their first interviews, the coaches agreed that it will be a tough competition, as is customary in AFECAVOL men’s events, and that their goal is to win a medal.

Yamil Herrera, Coach of Belize: “The tournament will be very interesting due to the roster each team is bringing and the competition system, every day is like a final. The seven regular players on our team have experience in this type of event. We believe the athletes will follow the tactical plan we have set for each match and earn good results.
Andrea Genova, Coach of El Salvador: “At the moment, we are preparing for this U21 AFECAVOL competition, which we know will be very good because there are teams with a lot of skill. In recent years, our results have been around fifth place, and we are looking to improve and climb a bit higher since the team we are bringing has more credentials”.
Roberto Argüello, Coach of Costa Rica: “We have a great commitment in this tournament because in the last two editions, we haven’t been able to make it to the podium. We know we have a good team, and our intention is to work hard, stay organized, and achieve a podium finish”.
Reider Lucas, Coach of Guatemala: “Our goal in the competition is to try to achieve a good result. We have prepared well for this type of event. We know the matches will be tough, as they have been in AFECAVOL and all Central America. We believe we can have a good competition, and we are hoping for those results.
Carlos Funes, Coach of Honduras: “Honduras has been in a preparation process since mid-January. We trained hard. Given our recent placements in the younger categories, the players are committed and determined to give their all. We are focused, we have studied the teams we have been playing against, and we hope to finish in a position that reflects our preparation”.
Jorge Luis Mena, Coach of Nicaragua: “Nicaragua’s expectations are the same as always, to finish among the medalists. We know the tournament won’t be easy, as there are several strong teams. We will aim to bring a medal to our country, that’s the goal for all the players, who are well-prepared for this moment. We know all our close rivals, and we are going to give it our all in this tournament”.
Horacio Angulo, Coach of Panama: “Our expectation as a team is to try to be on the podium. We’ve worked very hard with this team. We know that all the teams are coming to fight for a top spot in this tournament. We’re here to take it one game at a time and try to play in a way that benefits us to secure a podium finish”.
