Mexico recovers to defeat Cuba

COLIMA, Mexico, August 6, 2025.- Mexico rallied after losing the first set and defeated Cuba 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 28-26) in the closing match of the Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup this Wednesday in Colima, Mexico.

With the victory, the home team improves their record to 2 wins and 1 loss, while Cuba remains winless at 0-3.

Mexico dominated in attacks 61-45 and in blocks 10-7, while the serves were tied at 7-7.

Sofía Maldonado and Uxue Guereca led Mexico with 23 and 21 points respectively, while Karina Flores added another 16.

For Cuba, captain Dezirett Madan had 14 points, followed by Yanisleidis Sánchez with 13, while Ivy May Vila contributed with 11 and Laura Suarez  add 10.

Nicola Negro, Mexico’s coach: “We played a very uncontrolled first set, the team was nervous, we knew the importance of this match, but then in the second set, we came back with a different spirit and grew in aggression with our serves and attacks. We played very well today.”

Manuel Torres, Cuba’s coach: “It was a hard-fought game from start to finish, at the end, Mexico played better, things went better for them, and well, they got the result.”
