Cafeteros, Gigantes and Plataneros Protect Their Home Courts in LVSM Sunday Action

YAUCO, Puerto Rico, December 7, 2025.- In Sunday action of the Puerto Rican Men’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSM), the Cafeteros de Yauco, Gigantes de Carolina, and Plataneros de Corozal earned victories on their home courts.

At the Raúl “Pipote” Oliveras Coliseum, the Cafeteros handed the two-time defending champions Caribes de San Sebastián their second loss of the season in a five-set battle (25-22, 18-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-9).

With the win, Yauco collected two points, while the Caribes added one in the loss.

With the match tied at two sets apiece, the fifth set featured only one tie (1-1), when San Sebastián’s Pelegrín Vargas scored on a back-row attack. From there, everything went Yauco’s way, as they built a 10-4 lead following a block by Ángel De La Cruz against Corey Chavers.

Yauco moved ahead 12-6 on a kill by Juan Felipe Castañeda from the left side. The set point came at 14-9 with a spike by Brandon Rattray that broke through the Caribes’ block. The victory was sealed on the next rally when Pelegrín Vargas Jr. hit out from position four.

With the two points earned, Yauco remains in second place with a 13-4 record and 34 points, trailing the first-place Caribes, who stand at 15-2 with 41 points.

The Cafeteros’ offense was balanced, led by Juan Felipe Castañeda with 21 points (17 kills, 3 blocks, and 1 ace), followed by Iván Fernández and Brandon Rattray with 14 points each. For San Sebastián, Pelegrín Vargas Jr. led with 22 points.

At the Juan C. Berríos court in Barranquitas, the Plataneros de Corozal defeated the Mets de Guaynabo by scores of 26-24, 25-18, 22-25 and 25-17.

Corozal had four players in double figures: Jalen Penrose with 23 points, Spencer Olivier and Julio Mercedes with 13 each, and Ramón Matos with 11. For the Mets, Inovel Romero scored 22 points in the loss.

The Plataneros earned three points to improve to 11-6 and reach 32 points, tying the Patriotas de Lares for third place. Guaynabo, meanwhile, continues to fall out of playoff contention, sitting last at 2-15 with just 9 points.

At the Guillermo Angulo Coliseum, the Gigantes de Carolina came out on top in another close match, edging Lares 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 24-22).

Carolina added two points to improve to 7-10 and reach 22 points. The Patriotas, who picked up one point in the defeat, now stand at 10-7 with 32 points, tied with Corozal for third place.

Carolina’s main spark was Arnaldo Torres with 32 points, while Jair Santiago led Lares with 29.
