Caribes “steal” a thriller in Lares and take a 2-0 lead in Semifinal A of the LVSM

LARES, Puerto Rico, December 28, 2025. – The two-time champions, Caribes de San Sebastián, stole the second match of Semifinal A of the Men’s Superior Volleyball League by prevailing in four sets (25-20, 29-31, 25-17, 25-20) over the Patriotas de Lares at the Félix Méndez Acevedo Coliseum, once again before a sold-out crowd.

With the victory, the Caribes take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, in which the first team to win four matches advances to the final.

The Patriotas managed to level the match at one set apiece after coming from behind, following a squandered 23-21 lead by the Caribes late in the second set.

Two consecutive attacks by Pablo Guzmán tied the set, which remained tight until point 29. Lares closed the set 31-29 with a middle attack by Jonathan Rodríguez, followed immediately by a block on Mark Frazier in zone two.

In the third set, the Caribes pulled away 18-12 with an ace by Corey Chavers and never looked back. They reached set point at 24-16 after a block on Jair Santiago in zone two and closed the set 25-17 with another block, this time by Mark Frazier on Pablo Guzmán, to take control of the night two sets to one.

The fourth set began with San Sebastián leading 8-3, including another ace by Chavers. However, the Patriotas responded with a 7-2 run to take a slim lead. From there, both squads engaged in a dramatic finish, with the Caribes maintaining a one- or two-point advantage down the stretch.

With the score at 21-20, San Sebastián strung together four straight points: an attack from zone four and an ace by Chavers, a successful spike by Ezequiel Cruz from zone two, and finally an attack by Pelegrín Vargas from zone four to seal the victory.

San Sebastián dominated the statistics: 61-44 in attacks, 13-8 in blocks, 7-3 in aces, 51-40 in digs, and 27-24 in assists. Lares was superior in receptions, 52-45.

The Caribes’ balanced offense was led by Mark Frazier (27 points), Pelegrín Vargas (21), and Corey Chavers (20). For Lares, Jair Santiago scored 15 points and Johan León added 13.

The series continues Tuesday, December 30, at the Luis Aymat Cardona Coliseum, home of the Caribes de San Sebastián.

Semifinal B will play its second match this Monday, December 29, at the Carmen Z. Figueroa Coliseum in Corozal, where Yauco leads the series 1-0.
