CHITRÉ, Panama, October 14, 2024. – Costa Rica defeated El Salvador in a remarkable comeback, 3-2 (20-25, 26-28, 25-16, 26-24, 15-9), on the fourth day of the 20th AFECAVOL U21 Men’s Central American Championship at the Papa Francisco Gymnasium in Chitré, Panama.
With the win, Costa Rica improved to a 2-1 record, while El Salvador remains winless at 0-4.
Costa Rica (2-1) will face the current champion Guatemala (3-0) on Tuesday, October 15, at 3:00 p.m., and El Salvador (0-4) will have a rest day.
Costa Rica recovered from a 0-2 set deficit with an 11-7 blocking advantage and committed fewer errors, 27-39. El Salvador led in attacks 61-59 and in serves 7-3.
Denzel Jiménez led Costa Rica with 16 points, all on kills. Jeremy Vanega scored 15 points (9 attacks and a match-high of 6 blocks). Johan Cerdas and Kevin Parra contributed to the win with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Abner Cano from El Salvador led all scorers with 22 points (19 attacks, 3 aces), followed by Ricardo Alegría with 20 points (16 attacks, 2 blocks, 2 aces). Julio Jiménez added 13 points, and Andrés Reyes contributed 10.
El Salvador started strong and fought hard to win the second set, which was tied several times before a tight 28-26 finish, thanks to an opponent error and a powerful attack from Ricardo Alegría. Costa Rica was dominant in winning the third set, and in the fourth, they had another close finish, closing it out with an attack from Ignacio Morales and an error from El Salvador to force the fifth set. Costa Rica sealed the tie-break with a 9-5 advantage in attacks, benefiting from five errors by El Salvador.
Oswaldo Chacón, libero of Costa Rica: “It was a very tough match against El Salvador. We were down 2-0, but by working as a team, we were able to achieve anything. I’m very happy with the whole team because it’s not easy to come back like that. For the rest of the championship, we’ll give it our all to try and reach the podium and, if possible, win the championship”.
