SANTA ROSA DE COPAN, Honduras, September 12, 2022.- Costa Rica earned their second win defeating Guatemala 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-18) at the XIV Boys’ U19 Central American Championship of AFECAVOL being held at the Santa Rosa de Copan Gymnasium.
Costa Rica is undefeated 2-0 and has a total of 10 points, while Guatemala has no victories 0-2, with two points.
Costa Rica was more dominant in the second set, jumping to a huge 13-7 advantage with their blocking and that mentally affected the Guatemalan team.
Costa Rica led in blocking by a huge 17-3 margin in blocks; they also led 27-19 in attacks and 7-2 in serves. Guatemala committed fewer errors (24-28) than Costa Rica.
The top scorer of the game was outside hitter Grant Stanley of Costa Rica with 18 points from 11 attacks, 5 blocks and 2 aces. Also contributing to Costa Rica’s win was its captain David Córdoba with 9 puntos, who led in blocks with 6 points.
Opposite hitter Ferdinando González and middle blocker Theo Wandel scored 4 points each for Guatemala.
On day three of competition, Costa Rica (2-0) will face Honduras (0-1) and Guatemala (0-2) meets El Salvador (1-0).
David Córdoba, captain of Costa Rica: “It was exciting today’s victory. We had faced Guatemala during the Pan American Cup, and we knew their game level. We played at our rhythm and came out with a good result”.
Luis Fernando Castañeda, head coach of Guatemala: “Costa Rica is an experienced team, they are good, and they complement each other well, everybody defends and attacks. We attacked strongly, but Costa Rica defended a lot. We will try to win our next three matches and see if there’s a chance to win a medal. This was an important game to get in the competition, after yesterday’s loss against Belize, who by the way is nice to see their level of play”.
