CASTRIES, St Lucia, February 25, 2024.- The pair of Thornia Mitchell and Renisha Stafford took gold, as Grenada bossed the women’s segment of the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Senior Beach Volleyball Tournament here at the Cul de Sac Bay.
Mitchell and Stafford on day three of the tournament, kept their perfect record intact, defeating St Lucia’s Team One of Chenoa Evans and Denila Prospere 2-1( 22-10, 17-21, 15-9) in the final to take the gold medal.
The Grenadians thus avenged their loss in the 2023 final, as they fell to Evans and Prospere.
Commenting on the victory, Mitchell put it down to composure.
“ For us, it was about assuring each other. We were there for each and pushed ourselves”, she outlined.
Noting that it was always their ambition to be at the top of the podium, Mitchell related, “We came here with the main intention to execute and that is what we did. We are proud of ourselves. This a moment for us and for Grenada to win an ECVA title. It is a dream come true”.
En route to the final, Mitchell and Stafford won 2-0( 21-17 , 21-17) over Bermuda’s Megan Hands and Hailey Moss in the semifinals and overcame Saquanna Duncan and Shanadia Sylvester of St Vincent and the Grenadines 2-0( 21-9, 21-16 )) ,
On the other hand, Evans and Propere beat Dominica’s Zahidu Henry and Nyla Edmund 21-9, 21-5 in the semifinals. This after they had taken care of Antigua’s pair of Sharifa Simmons and Jassania Joseph 2-0 ( 21-9, 21-13) in the quarter finals.
The other quarter finals saw Henry and Edmund outlasting Tenayshestigni Joseph and Clio Phillip, representing St Lucia Team Two 2-1 (21-12, 19-21, 18–16) in their match up, while Hands and Moss defeated St Kitts and Nevis’ Shanella and Shania Harris 2-1(21-9, 11-21, 16-14).
Also, on day three, the British Virgin Island’s team of Zoe Richards and Makalia Powell defeated Anguilla’s Deandra Flemming and Lavesha Richardson 2-0( 21-16, 21-10), in the match to determine the ninth and tenth places.
And, Dominica’s Henry/ Edmund took bronze defeating Bermuda’s Hands/ Moss 2-0 (21-11, 21-17).
