CHITRÉ, Panama, October 12, 2024.- Defending champion Guatemala earned a dominant victory over Honduras 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-15) on the second day of action at the 20th AFECAVOL U21 Men’s Central American Championship in Chitré, Panama.
Guatemala earned its second straight-set victory, improving its record to 2-0 with 10 points. Honduras remains winless at 0-2.
Guatemala used their entire roster, finishing with a 41-25 advantage in kills, 9-2 in blocks, and 4-2 in service points, while giving away 15 points from errors compared to 21 by Honduras.
Jerry Durán of Guatemala was the top scorer in the match with 14 points. Guatemala’s team captain finished with 10 points. Roberto Recinos and Christian Álvarez also contributed to the win, each scoring 9 points.
Fernando Herrera led Honduras’ scoring with 12 points, followed by Jonathan Meza with 9.
On the third day of the event, Guatemala (2-0) will face Belize (2-0) at 3:00pm, and Honduras (0-2) will play against Costa Rica (0-1) at 8:00pm.
Yeferson Zavala, captain of Guatemala: “My impressions of the match are very positive. We were able to close with a good 3-0 result. Every day we aim to win all our matches with better outcomes. There is still a long way to go. We are going to give it our all to achieve a good result in the competition”.
Jonathan Meza, captain of Honduras: “We’ve faced several challenges. Our main middle blocker got injured in the first training, and we had to improvise a bit with the rest of the players. This has caused difficulties that we’ve been trying to address in morning practices, but we haven’t been able to fully execute and be solid in our game. Tomorrow will be better”.
