CHITRÉ, Panama, October 13, 2024.- Guatemala defeated Belize 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-14) to remain undefeated in the 20th Central American U21 Men’s Championship at the Papa Francisco Gymnasium in Chitré, Panama.
After three days of competition, the defending champions hold a 3-0 record and 15 points. Belize now has a 2-1 record and 8 points.
On Monday, Guatemala (3-0) will have a rest day, while Belize (2-1) will face Panama at 8:00pm local time.
Guatemala led in attacks (41-31) and in serves (7-3), while Belize was stronger in blocks (9-8). Guatemala benefited from 21 errors by Belize, compared to 15.
Yeferson Zavala scored 21 points (15 attacks, 3 blocks, 3 aces) in Guatemala’s victory, and Roberto Recinos contributed 12 points (10 attacks, one block, one ace).
Eleazar Mejía and Kaelen Ingram led Belize with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
Guatemala came back from a five-point deficit (16-21) in the second set with the offense of Roberto Recinos and Yeferson Zavala; Belize then reached set point (24-19) with Brayden Richardson serving, but an attack by Daniel Delgado (who came off the bench), along with a Belize error, allowed Guatemala to tie at 24. Delgado brought Guatemala to set point, and Belize tied at 25 with an attack by Eleazar Mejía. Finally, an attack by Delgado and a block by Recinos on Belize’s Kaelen Ingram secured the set for Guatemala.
Jerry Durán, opposite hitter for Guatemala: “The game started off very tight, with both teams scoring good points. In the second set, things got a bit complicated at the start, but we were able to take advantage of our strength in blocking and won the set. In the third set, we came in with a lot of confidence to win the match”.
Reider Lucas, coach of Guatemala: “In the second set, we were down by five points, and we had already used both timeouts. We had to make a substitution to hold the score, and it worked. We replaced our opposite hitter, and Daniel Delgado came in and helped with two serves that disrupted Belize’s first line of defense. This contributed to our serve getting stronger, and we ended up blocking very well, allowing us to tie the game. Our attitude improved, and both our offense and defense started to perform, allowing us to win the match”.
Kaelen Ingram, opposite hitter of Belize: “It really comes down to who wants it the most. We wanted to win but you have to stick to the plan and that’s what Guatemala did, they had more consistency. Guatemala is a really good team. It’s a loss but it’s not over for us as yet for the gold. We’re going to come out strong again and we’re going to give a good competition as we always planned to do”.
