Mexico Advances Directly to the Semifinals in Asunción 2025

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay, August 19, 2025.- Mexico advanced directly to the semifinals of the men’s volleyball tournament at the II Junior Pan American Games Asunción 2025, after dominating Pool A with three consecutive victories and no defeats.

In their final group stage match, Mexico defeated Paraguay in straight sets 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-17), showcasing strength across all areas. With this result, the final Pool A standings were defined with Mexico in first place, followed by Colombia, Guatemala, and Paraguay.

In the quarterfinals, Colombia will face Cuba and Guatemala will meet Argentina, while Paraguay will compete in classification matches for positions 5 to 8.

The first set was marked by Mexico’s offensive power (12-9 in attacks), which managed to neutralize Paraguay’s blocking advantage (4-0). Eduardo Garza led Mexico’s offense, while José Gaete was the main scoring reference for the home team.

In the second set, Mexico adjusted its blocking and gained greater performance, with Jared Toy standing out as the top scorer. In the third set, Lorenzo Martínez and Bryan Vásquez joined the offensive effort, and a block by team captain Juan Salvador García —who came off the bench— against Alejandro López sealed the victory for Mexico.

Mexico outperformed Paraguay in attacks (38-32), blocks (10-4), and service aces (3-0). They also conceded 17 points on unforced errors while benefiting from 24 mistakes by their opponent.

Jared Toy was the only player to reach double digits, scoring 12 points and establishing himself as the match’s top performer.

Mexico’s opposite hitter, Lorenzo Martínez, said after the victory: “We achieved the goal we set from the moment we knew which group we were in. We knew the opponents would be tough, and we prepared well to face them as if they were finals. Now we have a rest day to fine-tune the details we missed in the group stage; we want to be ready for the semifinals. From the quarterfinals onward, the matches become more demanding.”
