MEXICO, January 22, 2026.– The history of Professional Volleyball in Mexico began to take shape last weekend with the staging of the first official matchday of the Professional Volleyball League in Mexico (LVPMX), held on January 17 and 18, marking a milestone in the development of the sport in the country.
After the opening matches, the Leonas de León, Guanajuato, moved to the top of the standings following a perfect home start against the Freseras de Irapuato, whom they defeated in both matches in straight sets. In the inaugural match, León claimed a 3–0 victory with set scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-17, and followed up with another 3–0 win (25-13, 25-20, 25-16) in the second encounter.
The first season of the LVPMX features six women’s teams, with a total registration of 83 athletes, including 24 foreign players, highlighting the competitive and international character of the new professional circuit.
The competition format includes a single round-robin preliminary phase, running from January 17 to March 22. At the conclusion of this phase, the top four teams in the standings will advance to the semifinals. Both the semifinals and the final will be played in home-and-away series, best of three matches, with the higher-ranked team hosting the decisive games. If a third match is required, it will be played the following day at the same venue.
In Guadalajara, the series between Tapatías and Guerreras de Puebla ended tied. Tapatías claimed the opening match in five sets (25-17, 25-16, 18-25, 18-25, 15-9), while the Guerreras responded with a convincing 3–0 victory (25-16, 25-14, 25-18) in the second match.
Meanwhile, the Coronelas de Durango dominated as visitors against the Gigantes de Aguascalientes, earning two wins. The first was an exciting five-set battle (20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-15), followed by a 3–1 victory (25-15, 25-18, 24-26, 25-20) in the second match.
