CHITRÉ, Panama, October 14, 2024. – Panama is undefeated with a five-set victory, 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 18-16), against Belize at the 20th AFECAVOL U21 Men’s Central American Championship on Monday night at the Papa Francisco Gymnasium in Chitré, Panama.
Panama stands unbeaten at 3-0 after four days of competition, while Belize holds a 2-2 record.
On the fifth day of competition, Belize (2-2) will face Honduras (0-4) at 5:30 p.m., and Panama (3-0) will play against Nicaragua (2-1) at 8:00 p.m.
Panama secured the win by capitalizing on 40 errors from Belize compared to their 23, and with an 8-6 advantage in aces. Belize dominated in attacks 69-53 and in blocks 14-11.
Four Panamanian players scored in double digits, with David De León leading with 20 points. Víctor Araúz and Víctor Pérez each added 13 points, and David Della Sera contributed 10.
The top scorer of the match was Belize’s Kaelen Ingram with 31 points, followed by his teammate Eleazar Mejia with 27, including a match-high of 4 aces. Preston Smith and Ryan Usher scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, with Usher recording a match-high of 6 blocks.
The game was a back-and-forth battle, with each team taking turns winning sets, and each rally full of energy. The match ended dramatically, as Belize recovered from a two-point deficit (12-14), saving two match points against Panama, both on errors. Belize tied the score at 14 with a block by Preston Smith against David De León. Panama once again reached match point (16-15) thanks to De León’s offense, but Belize tied it at 16 with a spike by Kaelen Ingram. Víctor Pérez then scored two consecutive attack points to secure the win for Panama.
Jesús Moreno, libero of Panama: “From the start, we knew the game wouldn’t be easy, and Belize proved it. We were able to win thanks to the coaching staff and the team’s effort”.
Daunte Gill, libero of Belize: “We were technically together as a team. We made some simple mistakes, but we couldn’t keep the momentum for the team. We’ll just have to play hard for our next two games and try to win a medal”.
