August 7, 2023.- United States advanced to the FIVB Girls U19 World Championship quarterfinals on Monday by defeating the Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 2-24) in Osijek, Croatia.
United States (6-0) will play Brazil (4-2) in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. The time has not yet been announced. The Dominican Republic (2-4) will face Argentina (4-2) in the matches for positions 9-16.
Outside hitter Abigail Vander Wal was the American leading scorer with 13 points, one more than middle blocker Favor Anyanwu. Dominican outside hitter Katielle Vargas topped all scorers with 18 points.
Puerto Rico (2-4) lost their quarterfinal 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21) to Japan (5-1). Opposite Miku Akimoto left the court with 16 points and outside hitter Riri Kasai with 13 on the Japanese side, while outside hitter Elena Garcia and opposite Grace Mar Villanueva each scored 14 for Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico will also play for positions 9 to 16 against China (5-1) in Szeged, Hungary.
Mexico (1-5) and Canada (1-5) will battle each other for positions 17-20. On Monday Mexico beat Germany 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 26-24) and Canada prevailed 3-1 (25-19, 27-25, 16-25, 25-23) over Chile.
