SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 14, 2024.- In a match that was full of emotions, the United States defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 29-31, 25 -18), to achieve its first victory in the 27th edition of the Pan American Men’s Volleyball Cup, an event that takes place in the “Ricardo Arias” Pavilion of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.
The Americans were better in attacks 50-42, in blocks 11-8 and in serves 12-1.
Gabriel García was the most outstanding offensive player for the United States with 19 points followed by Ethan Chaplin and Michael Marshman with 17 and 12 points respectively. For Puerto Rico, the top scorer was Jamal Carballo with 19 points followed by Klistan Vidal with 11.
Andy Read, coach of the United States: I am very proud of the way they played, we had a team from Puerto Rico that responded very well in the third set, but we were able to recover in the fourth and take the victory.
Alberto Torres, coach of Puerto Rico: This is the first game of the tournament, and we knew it was going to be tough going against the United States, but I think we showed that we have the potential to compete with the teams that are in the tournament.
