August 2, 2023.- United States move 2-0 in Pool D at the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U19 World Championship on Wednesday with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 26-24) victory over Japan in Osijek, Croatia.
United States was dominant with a 13-4 advantage in blocks, both teams scored on 34 kills. The U.S. also led 5-3 in serves.
Outside hitter Abby Vander Wal led the U.S. again with 14 points on 12 kills, one block, and one ace. Middle blocker Ayden Ames totaled 12 points, combining six kills with her six blocks. Middle blocker Anyanwu Favor finished with nine points on five kills, two blocks, and two aces.
Also in Pool D, Serbia overcame Mexico 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-17). Serbia finished with a huge 40-28 advantage in kills and 7-4 in aces. Mexico led 5-4 in blocks, allowing 24 points on errors.
Türkiye downed Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-16) in Pool B. The Europeans led in every skill, attacks (37-28), blocks (5-4) and serves (8-5), scoring on 24 opponent errors against 14.
Dominican Republic are 1-1 after falling 3-1 (26-24, 15-25, 25-16, 25-23) in Pool B to Germany. Dominicans outplayed Germany 10-9 in blocks and 7-6 in serves. Germany led in kills 47-44. Dominican Ariana Rodriguez led all scorers with 21 points on 16 kills, 2 blocks and three aces.
In Pool C Szeged, Hungary, Italy won their duel to Canada 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-19), leading 40-22 in kills, 9-4 in blocks and 11-1 in serves.
On Thursday, United States plays Mexico, Dominicans go up against Türkiye, Puerto Rico battles Croatia and Canada faces Bulgaria.
