PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, June 7, 2023.- Women duos of the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico advanced undefeated to the quarterfinal round of the NORCECA Continental Beach Volleyball in Punta Cana, a Qualifier tournament to the 2023 World Championship.
USA’s duo of Kelley Kolinse and Haley Harward easily defeated Cubans Amanda Armenteros and Yenifer Rivera 2-0 (21-10, 21-10) in Pool A. Then they controlled two Central American tandems, that of Yvonne Soler and Laura Molina of El Salvador 2-0 (21-4, 21-8), and Guatemalans Natalia Giron and Estefanie Bethancourt 2-0 ( 21-17, 21-20).
Canadians Shanice Marcelle and Sophie Bukovec went undefeated in Pool B, first defeating Chlouie Gaetos/Deajra Tulloch of Cayman Islands 2-0 (21-7, 21-7), then over Lolette Rodriguez and Socorro Lopez of Nicaragua 2-0 (21-13, 22-20), followed by a 2-0 (21-10 , 21-9) victory against Ximena Núñez and Kianny Araya of Costa Rica.
In Pool C, Allanis Navas alongside Maria Gonzalez started their campaign with two solid wins. First with a 2-0 (21-11, 21-5) win over Chauna Kelly and Petal Smith of Jamaica, followed by a 2-0 (21-4, 21-6) against Melanie Valenciana and Bailey Foy of U.S. Virgin Islands. Dominicans Bethania Almanzar and Julibeth Payano were resilient in the end, but Navas and Gonzalez pulled off their third win 2-0 (21-12, 23-21).
Also advancing into the quarterfinal round are Bethania Almanzar/Julibeth Payano (DOM), Ximena Núñez/Kianny Araya (CRC), Amanda Armenteros/Yenifer Rivera (CUB), Natalia Girón/Estefanie Bethancourt (GUA), y Socorro López/Lolette Rodriguez (NCA).
The quarterfinal competition starts this Thursday at 8:30 am (local time) on the sand courts located at Los Corales Beach in Punta Cana, the winners will qualify to the 2023 World Championship in Tlaxcala, Mexico and will advance into semifinals.
