PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, June 7, 2023.- Teams from the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada won all three of their preliminary round matches to advance undefeated to the quarterfinals of the NORCECA Continental Beach Volleyball World Championship Qualifier in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Andrew Benesh and Miles Partain of the United States in Pool A easily defeated Jesario Ebanks/Stephen Watson of Cayman Islands 2-0 (21-4, 21-4) and dominated Oscar Martinez/Hayerling Goris of the Dominican Republic 2-0 (21-15, 21-14). Benesh and Partain’s most battled performance was overcoming Cubans Jorge Alayo and Noslen Diaz (21-19, 26- 24) who also move into the quarterfinals.
Garrett Bucklin and Robert Cronshaw of the U.S. Virgin Islands managed two beat the two Central American tandems in Pool C, first they overpowered Danier Dyner/Jhostin Varela of Costa Rica 2-0 (21-18, 21-19) and Andy Blanco/Luis Garcia of Guatemala 2-0 (21-13, 21-17), followed by their third victory against Jamaica´s Mark Blake/Javian Smith 2-0 (21-12, 21- 5).
Canadians Sam Schachter and Daniel Dearing had no setbacks in their three Pool B victories. Sam and Dan first defeated Joseph Clercent/Sheldon Descartes of Saint Lucia 2-0 (21-8, 21-10), followed by a 2-0 (21-12, 21-14) over Franklin Flores/Armando Guatemala of El Salvador and closing the day 2-0 (21 -18, 21-16) against Ruben Mora and Dany Lopez of Nicaragua.
In addition to Dominicans Oscar Martinez/Hayerling Goris, three Central American pairs will also compete in quarterfinals, Danier Dyner/Jhostin Varela of Costa Rica, Andy Blanco/Luis Garcia of Guatemala and Rubén Mora/Dany López of Nicaragua.
Winners of the quarterfinals that start at 8:30 (local time) on Thursday, will win the ticket to the 2023 Beach Volleyball World Championship and will advance to semifinals here at Los Corales Beach in Punta Cana.
