Argentina Earns Direct Ticket to the Junior Pan American Games Semifinals

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay, August 12, 2025.– Argentina secured a direct berth to the semifinals of the women’s volleyball tournament at the II Junior Pan American Games Asunción 2025, finishing first in Pool A with an undefeated 3-0 record.

In their final pool play match, Argentina defeated Costa Rica 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-22). The Central American team, with a 1-2 record, now awaits the final standings to determine the round they will play in the next stage.

The South Americans started with complete dominance in the opening set. In the second, Costa Rica, led by Ivanny Blackwood and Priscilla Alfaro, tied the score at 15 points, but Argentina, with María Victoria Matich and Keila Llanos leading the way, regained control. Valentina Gartenbank added key points to close the set.

Maria Matich ARG

In the third, Costa Rica took a five-point lead (13-8) thanks to the offense of María Sofía Torres and serves by María del Sol Venegas, along with unforced errors from Argentina. However, Lara Espeche, Paula Tomasa, and Matich led a comeback to tie at 15. The score stayed close until Matich blocked Melina Abraca for match point, and team captain Josefina Ossvald sealed the victory from the service line.

Argentina led in attacking points 37 to 20, blocking 11 to 6, and service aces 7 to 5, committing one more error than Costa Rica (21-20). Matich and Ossvald led the Argentine offense with 15 and 11 points respectively, both scoring 5 blocks, while Paula Tomasa added 10 points. Venegas was Costa Rica’s top scorer with 8 points.

Head Coach of Argentina, Eduardo Allona, highlighted the competitive level of their recent opponents: “Costa Rica played well and pushed us, just like Paraguay did yesterday. I think volleyball in both regions (South America and NORCECA) is improving. We’re already among the top four teams in the tournament.”

Costa Rican coach Braulio Godínez valued the experience as part of the team’s growth: “It was an exciting match. We played the first set too timidly, with a lot of insecurity. We improved in the second set, played more aggressively, and took more risks. In the final stretch of the third set, which was quite good, the double substitution we tried didn’t work, but it’s all part of the team’s learning process. Our goal is the Central American Games in Guatemala. Here, we hope to win one of the next three matches.”

Mexico Secures Quarterfinal Spot in Asunción

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay, August 12, 2025. – Mexico defeated Chile 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) on the final day of the women’s volleyball group stage at the II Junior Pan American Games Asunción 2025, securing their place in the quarterfinals.

Middle blocker Arleth Márquez, along with Aimé Topete, played key roles in helping Mexico rally from a six-point deficit (12-18) in the first set, a lead built by Chile through the offensive efforts of Florencia Aguilera, María Véliz, and Esperanza Basualto. Mexico adjusted and took the tightly contested opening set.

Jimena Salinas MEX

In the second set, the Mexican squad dominated with authority and extended the gap without major trouble. The third set was tied at 16 points apiece before Márquez and setter Jimena Salinas, from the service line, pushed Mexico ahead to seal the straight-set victory.

Mexico held the advantage in attacks (42-29) and serves (12-5), while Chile led in blocking (11-7). Both teams committed a similar number of errors, Mexico 11, Chile 14.

We are known for our grit and battling until the end. We listened to our coach’s instructions, and, for the second set, we corrected our mistakes, paid close attention, and found areas for improvement. We are already in the quarterfinals, now it’s about continuing to improve, fine-tuning details, and going for more.”

Chilean middle blocker Esperanza Basualto commented: “We are a young team, with an average age of 17, and that’s why we lack a bit of grit and experience. We’ve had ups and downs, but we are satisfied with what we are building. Due to our age, we need more consistency and the ability to recover after losing a point.”

We have a similar technical and physical level, but the volume of play we have in Central America and NORCECA benefits us a lot, and today that made the difference.”

Juan Carlos Núñez, Puerto Rico coach: “We achieved one of the goals we set for ourselves since we arrived at this tournament, which was to be on the podium, no matter what medal it was, we were coming off two consecutive losses, so this teaches us a bit of maturity in our game and that no matter if you have a setback along the way, you have to be able to get back up. We are a very emotional team, and having come back from those losses to play a big game against Mexico at home is an important victory for us as a program.”

Nicola Negro, Mexico coach: “It was a game in which we started well, the feeling was that from the third set onwards, our energy was very low and our serve was never decisive, we also lost a lot of aggression in our attacks, the opposite of Puerto Rico, who grew and put more aggression into their attacks. That was the difference in the game.”

Blocking was key to Brazil’s victory, with a 13-6 advantage, along with superiority in attacks (53-42). Both teams scored 5 aces. Brazil gave away 20 points on errors, while Mexico conceded 25.

Ana Luiza Rüdiger was the top scorer with 15 points. Lívia dos Santos added 14 and Maria Clara de Moura contributed 12. For Mexico, Andrea Felix was the only player in double digits, with 14 points.

Letizia, Brazil’s libero, explained: “We were nervous going into the game, which is normal for the first match, and we were distracted. During the match, we were able to focus and put our minds into the game. Things went much better in the fourth set.”

Brazil’s coach, Marcos Pinheiro, said: “We have a lot of respect for Mexico. In their last competition they finished third after a very tough semifinal. Today, the first sets were a game of stars; nerves were running high. We handled the first set very well, but in the second, a change in positions prevented us from executing our plan. We returned to our game plan in the last two sets, and things went well, especially in our reception.”

Mexico’s coach, Luis León, shared his thoughts: “When things didn’t work for us at certain times, Brazil took advantage, made adjustments, changed players, and it worked for them. At some point, Mexico didn’t manage to maintain the rhythm and composure, allowing Brazil to get a bigger lead. Physically and technically, Brazil has a good team.”

Next, Brazil (1-0) will face the Dominican Republic (1-0), while Mexico (0-1) will play Chile (0-1).

However, the Caribbean side tied the score at 17 points and took advantage of a series of errors from the South American team to claim the first set, with Alondra Tapia as their main offensive weapon.

The Caribbean team capitalized on 31 unforced errors by Chile, committing only 15 themselves, and outblocked their opponents 8-3. Both teams scored 30 attack points and 6 aces.

Our serving and passing fundamentals were not executed well, that was our biggest problem, and we need to improve that right away. This is a developing, mixed team, and if we can fix that aspect, we’ll perform much better in the tournament”.

In their next match, the Dominican Republic will face Mexico, while Chile will take on Brazil.

Both teams are part of Pool A of the tournament, where their next matches will be Argentina against hosts Paraguay and Cuba against Costa Rica.I

In the first and second sets, Cuba started strong, but Argentina came from behind in both. In the opener, Argentina tied at 15 points with a block from Josefina Ossvald and, taking advantage of consecutive opponent errors, took the lead. An attack by Keila Llanos closed the first set in favor of the South Americans.

A block by María Victoria Matich brought match point (24-23), and a Cuban net error sealed the win.

Coach Eduardo Allona highlighted the key to the victory: “In the last set, at times we were playing so-so, and at other times very well. Keila’s serve, the best we have, worked in our favor by making Cuba’s setting more difficult, allowing our middle blocker to get the block”.

Cuba’s coach Norka Latamblet noted, “I think that due to the long trips to get here, we didn’t have time to train and get the team mentally ready. We need to finish better; they play well and have good preparation. The match was good, we always started ahead, and we hope that in the next games we can close them out.”

Women’s Volleyball at Asunción 2025 set to begin

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay, August 9, 2025.– Women’s volleyball is ready to kick off the second edition of the Junior Pan American Games in Asunción, Paraguay

Representatives from the eight participating teams expressed optimism during the general technical meeting held at the Arena COP, the competition venue. It was confirmed that, in addition to the champion earning a berth to the Lima 2027 Pan American Games, the highest-ranked team from the other confederation that does not win the title will also qualify for the 2027 Pan American Games.

Teams have been divided into two groups: Group A consists of Argentina, Cuba, Costa Rica, and Paraguay, while Group B includes the defending champions, Brazil, alongside Chile, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico.

Eduardo Allona, Argentina’s Head Coach: “The team is doing very well. We trained more intensively over the last two weeks, trying to put the team together for the competition. We are coming in with great determination to put on a good performance at the Games. We will aim to repeat or improve on the position we achieved in the first edition of the Games – Argentina won the bronze medal.”

ARG

Giovani Foppa, Brazil’s Team Manager: “This is a very important competition. Brazil must always come at full strength for all volleyball tournaments, so we have worked hard and must deliver a strong performance. The players are looking for a solid place in the international arena.”

BRA

Sergio Alejandro Soto, Head Coach Chile: “I’m very happy, excited, and eager to start the competition. We’ve been training all year in different categories because we have a mix of players on the team. We have an adult team that participated in the Copa América and toured Argentina; and a youth team that participated in the U-19 World Cup, and that’s how we prepared. Our first goal is to compete match after match, but above all, to finish in the top four.”

CHI

CRC

Norka Latamblet, Head Coach Cuba: “It’s not a difficult or easy task, but we’re here to achieve the result Cuba has been hoping for, given that we didn’t participate in the first version of the games. We had the U23 Pan American Cup, which served as preparation, and despite not competing for a year, they performed quite well. This is my debut as an international coach, and I’m very excited, hoping we do well and achieve our goal of qualifying for the Pan American Games.”

CUB

Wagner Pacheco, Head Coach Dominican Republic: “We hope to play better than we did recently in Mexico, although I have a very important loss (the setter). But the time we had in Mexico helped us train. I think it will be a very tough tournament because the teams have strong U23 players. We are going to have a good tournament because our level is improving.”

DOM

Luis León, Head Coach Mexico: “We feel ready to begin this new competition, and I’m sure the girls will give their all. We had approximately nine weeks of training and competed in the U23 Pan American Cup, where we finished third. We have a good team and expectations are high. We think we can compete in the finals, as our goal is to qualify for the 2027 Pan American Games.”

MEX

Delio Arruebarrena, Head Coach Paraguay: “I started coaching Paraguay’s national team in 2022. I made a selection of players during a national championship. Technically speaking, the team is very good. We haven’t had the opportunity to compete at international level, and this could affect the players emotionally”.

I’m proud of my team, which, instead of slowing down, is increasing the pace of play in the tournament.”

Deon Hutchinson, Trinidad and Tobago coach: “Today was the first day we played with the full team since there were players who hadn’t made it to the country, but I think we performed well against Canada, showing our potential and that we can compete at this level.”

When you’re on the court, you shouldn’t disrespect your opponent, you have to play seriously even if they’re inferior, my concern was to stay focused, because if we stay focused like we have, it will be more difficult for them. I like this, it means that my team is growing up”.

José Miguel Briceño, coach of Costa Rica: “It was a slightly difficult match, we knew Peru was motivated after their victory against Mexico, professor Rizola rotated the team and maintained the tactical idea of controlling our outside hitters, but we couldn’t receive adequately, we had flashes of chance in some stretches of the match, but it wasn’t enough to meet our goal of reaching more than 18 points”.

Nicola Negro, Mexico coach: “We brought the lose upon ourselves because we played a game with very little discipline in the blocking-defense phase. We let Peru’s offense go too far, and that’s our responsibility, aside from the fact that the Peruvians played a tremendous game.”

Suriname Women and Barbados Men CAZOVA Under 17 Champions

SPANISH TOWN, Jamaica, August 3, 2025.- The inaugural CAZOVA Under 17 Championships ended on Sunday with the all-conquering Suriname women and Barbados men duly taking the titles.

The women’s final between unbeaten Suriname and Barbados was close from start to finish. While the Bajans relied on their all-round strength and court craft to manipulate games, their opponents leaned on the prodigious thirteen-year-old MVP, Zoe Roethoj, to propel their attack.

The first set was close. It took service errors to determine the tie-break with Suriname prevailing 29-27.    The second set developed not dissimilar to the first, with the teams’ swapping leads but sticking close.  Barbados middle blocker Gabriel Sandiford and Cuzera Batson, a dependable server, worked hard to be difference makers. They executed multiple outstanding plays to keep their team in the contest. However, the quality of pink and black clad Surinamese girls was too much. Suriname also took the second set 25-22.

Barbados did not give up. They were relentless in the third set, making few mistakes and manufacturing numerous survival plays. Batson was untouchable and they pulled back a set 25-18.  Barbados carried the momentum into the fourth set and looked motivated and sprightly. Suriname had no answers as the set ended 25-14 for two sets all.

But the class of the Suriname shone through in the deciding set. They rarely put a foot wrong and shifted momentum to race away to 15-9 celebration.

Claudius Staal, coach of Suriname, gave credit to Barbados for playing a great game, and said his girls became complacent midway the game. “The girls started strong. They thought they had won the game and lost focus. We had to get them refocused, and they were able to pull it off,” he said.

Coach Julia Lewis of Barbados said the better team won. “Suriname were the better team today. We went through a lot before getting here. Our team went through many changes, but they worked hard and gave everything. I am so proud of them,” she noted.

MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

The men’s final was not as epic. Barbados was just too good. After comprehensively beating everyone in the preliminary round without dropping a set, the outcome against Trinidad and Tobago was not unexpected. But favourites do lose sometimes. Not this time though. Try as they would, the Bajans, led by MVP Daniel Reece, were just a little better at the rudiments of the game: blocking, digging, serving, but especially spiking. The booming serves and powerful spikes produced quick points for Barbados who won the first set 25-19. Trinidad kept themselves relevant with the occasional kill. However, they were never going to be enough as Barbados romped to another 3-0 victory and deserved champions 25-19, 25-13, 25-14.

“Our junior teams have done exceptionally well throughout the years. In training I constantly remind the guys that they have big shoes to fill since we have won competitions like this before without dropping a set,” said Alwyn Oxley, coach of the powerful team Barbados. “We constantly motivate them and tell them that quitting is never an option and they must play hard until the last point. “

Custis Burkett, coach of Trinidad and Tobago, was a happy man, even after being beaten in the final. “We expected to get to the final and the boys played their heart out,” said Burkett. “After being beaten by Barbados in the preliminary round, we worked on some things but it was not enough. They tried hard in the final but it didn’t work out. That’s all we asked,” he concluded.

In the third-place playoffs earlier, hosts Jamaica were pushed into fourth place in both categories. Suriname men took bronze with 25-17. 25-23, 25-19 win, while Trinidad and Tobago women were too good, winning 25-9, 25. 7, 25-23.

COLIMA, Mexico, August 3, 2025 – Colombia dominated Canada in straight sets (25-16, 25-15, 22) to open the 22nd Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup at the Colima Multifunctional Auditorium of the Sports Institute in Colima, Mexico.

Guilherme Schmitz, Colombia coach: “We had a very good impression. There’s always some initial nervousness, but we controlled the action very well. Our serve was very good, and we were able to control Team Canada’s offense. In the third set, the Canadians came out stronger on serve, but we knew how to handle that situation. I’m very happy.”

Matthew Krueger, Canada coach: “I think Colombia played a magnificent match. They’re more experienced and a great volleyball team. In my opinion, we weren’t ready to play today. I think we should have done more in training to prepare for this game, and that was evident. So we learned a lesson about what it takes to play at this level. I congratulate Colombia. They played good volleyball today.”

Belize Claims Seventh Place at U23 Pan Am Cup

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, August 3, 2025.– Belize secured seventh place at the Men’s U23 Pan American Cup after defeating Suriname 3-2 (16-25, 25-14, 27-25, 22-25, 15-8) at the Domo Polideportivo in Zone 13.

Belize came alive in the second set, quickly taking the lead. The team’s top scorers in the tournament, Kaelen Ingram and Eleazar Mejía, began to showcase their quality.

Belize managed to rescue the third set, while Suriname responded strongly in the fourth to force a tiebreaker. The Belizeans held firm to clinch the seventh spot in the tournament.

Belize delivered a spectacular performance in attacks, outscoring Suriname by a huge margin (71-48). Blocking was more balanced but still in Belize’s favor (10-9), while Suriname had the edge in serving (5-2).

As in all of Belize’s matches, team captain Kaelen Ingram led the charge. This day was no exception, as he finished as the match’s top scorer with 31 points. Suriname’s Gianni Ritfeld tallied 19 points to lead his side.

Belize’s assistant coach Brandon Reeves commented, “I think we came out really focused. This whole tournament has been a learning curve for us. I’m very proud of the guys. I think we had ups and downs, but today they went out and proved to themselves that they are a great team. I think after this tournament we have a lot to work on, and I believe we will be better.”

Suriname’s head coach Carlos Orta said, “We expected to win today, but well, they played better than us. In the first set we didn’t put in the extra effort needed, and losing the next two sets made the match harder for us. Belize played better and I congratulate them; that’s why they won.”

Coaches Comment on Their Teams at the XXII Women’s Pan American Cup

COLIMA, Mexico, August 2, 2025 – The coaches of the 10 teams participating in the XXII Women’s Pan American Cup, which will be played from August 3 to 10 in the city of Colima, commented on the characteristics of their squads during the preliminary inspections conducted by the event’s Control Committee this Thursday.

Matthew Krueger (Canada): “We are going to use this tournament as a learning experience since half of the team are young players who have just moved up from the U-23 division, and this is my first time as a head coach in this type of competition. So, we are going to test ourselves in this event and try to do our best.”

Guilherme Schmitz (Colombia): “This is my first time participating in a Pan American Cup as coach of the Colombian senior team. We have high expectations for a great tournament. It’s our first competition of the season, which also serves as a great preparation for the World Championship to be held in Thailand.”

Esteban Ballestero, Assistant Coach (Costa Rica): “First, we want to compete; we want to play well on the court. Second, we want the players to adapt to playing under pressure from other teams, which we understand are stronger than us. Then, we can confront that pressure and try to find solutions during the game.”

Manuel Torres (Cuba): “Our expectations are high. We’re taking a new direction as a group. Although we came here with a limited group of players, the fundamental idea is to go out and play each match and, along the way, make adjustments to achieve the best possible result.”

Marcos Kwiek (Dominican Republic): “I think it’s going to be a good tournament. We have teams here that are also going to the World Cup, and they’ll use the tournament to fine-tune their teams, just like we are. So, we’re very focused and also want to seek a medal for the country, which is very important, and to continue our path to the World Cup.”

Nicola Negro (Mexico): “This season we’re starting a new cycle, and this will be our second competition after the Final Four in Puerto Rico. It’s an important Pan American Cup because it’s very close to the World Cup, so we hope to continue growing and get the best possible result since we’re playing at home.”

Antonio Rizola (Peru): “Peru is coming to this tournament with the expectation of testing another team. We played with a team in the Copa América, and here in the Pan American Cup we have five different players who weren’t in the first tournament we played this year, and it’s important because we’re preparing for next year. The Pan American Cup has always been an important tournament for Peru, and for me personally, Antonio Rizola.”

Juan Carlos Núñez (Puerto Rico): “This tournament is very important for us because it’s the last one we’ll have in preparation for the World Cup. We’ll also try to earn as many points as possible to remain ranked among the top 16 in the world. It’s incredibly important for us because there are many teams that can give us points. Thank God, the team arrived healthy, and we’ll fight for a spot on the podium.”

Adrian Fiorenza (Venezuela): “Our expectations are high after having participated in the Copa America in Brazil, where we competed with a very young team. We are coming to this Pan American Cup with girls who already have international experience. While it is true that Venezuela has not been in this category of performance for four years, we believe we have the talent and potential to perform well.”

Dominican Republic Defeats Mexico to Advance to the Final

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, August 2, 2025.- Dominican Republic defeated Mexico 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20) to qualify for the  Men’s U23 Pan American Cup finals, being held at the Domo Polideportivo.

“With the years we’ve been working with this group, they have the drive and desire to excel and achieve big things. Now that we’re in the final, we’ll give everything we have and see what happens,” he concluded.

Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and two from Barbados in Finals

Suriname’s unbeaten women advanced to the main game after beating Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in an absorbing spectacle of serving and hitting, arguably the best game of the championships thus far.

Outside hitter Sadie Tokar was the standout player for TT, working tirelessly both in attack and defense. After overpowering Jamaica 3-0 and capitulating 1-3 to Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago were in a mean mood. They jumped on a competitive Suriname from the start and quickly went up two sets to nil, 25-17, 25-21. But Suriname, led by left outside hitter Zoe Roethoj, were undaunted. They fought back with great hitting and took the third set 25-16. This lit a fire, and the Suriname girls exploded. They went on to win the next two sets, 25-21, 15-10, to cap off a memorable encounter and advancement to the final.

Claudius Staal, coach of Suriname, blamed the slow start on complacency. “The girls came in the game believing that they were the better team. They weren’t playing like it. I reminded them that they would have to play the best to win the game. They went out and started to play like they should, ” he said. Staal said he has been targeting this competition because it’s a qualifier for bigger tournaments in the future.  “We want to win here to get an opportunity in the NORCECA championships later in the year,” he informed.

Barbados women, on the other hand, waltzed into the final without breaking a sweat.  They beat hosts Jamaica, who have not won a game, 3-0: 25-10, 25-22, and 25-6.

The men’s final will be between unbeaten Barbados and a battling Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago had to dig deep to beat Suriname 3-2. TT won the first two sets 25-18, 25-22, but the gritty Surinamese were not done. They upped their game to win the next two sets (25-12, 25-18) and put themselves on par. Trinidad was a little more certain with their service game in the final set (15-12), which carried them through.

Unbeaten Barbados was through to the final even before their first serve. As soon as Trinidad and Tobago beat Suriname earlier in the day, they knew they had qualified. They warmed up for the final by beating Jamaica 3-0: 25 -12, 25 -11, and 25 -18.

The finals will take place at the same venue on Sunday.
