TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands, August 12, 2026. – The opening day of men’s competition at the 2026 Eastern Caribbean Senior Volleyball Championship delivered four hard-fought contests in Tortola, with every match decided in four or five sets.
Anguilla defeated host BVI 3-2 (23-25, 25-16, 24-26, 25-10, 13-15) in a five-set thriller that kept the crowd engaged until the final point. After a back-and-forth battle through the opening four sets, Anguilla held its composure in the decisive fifth to deny the hosts a winning start to the tournament.
Saint Lucia also came away with a five-set victory, defeating defending champion Antigua 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 10-15). The match swung back and forth before Saint Lucia prevailed in the tie-break, handing the defending champion an early setback.
St. Vincent opened its campaign with a 3-1 victory over Grenada (21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 18-25), while Dominica defeated Bermuda 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21) in another competitive contest.
Speaking after the match, BVI captain Norville Braithwaite said the team will need to minimize its errors moving forward. He added that ahead of their next match, BVI plans to refine its play and bring its execution back in line with how the team has prepared in training.
More exciting matches are expected on Day 2 as teams continue their push toward the weekend’s championship matches.
The championship continues through August 16 at the Multipurpose Complex in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
