Canada Defeats Mexico in Straight Sets to Stay in the Semifinal Race

PONCE, Puerto Rico, August 26, 2026. – Canada earned an important victory to remain in contention for a spot in the semifinals of the NORCECA Men’s Final Six, defeating Mexico in straight sets on Wednesday at the Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium.

The set scores were 25-13, 25-17, 25-17. Canada and Mexico both moved to 2-2 records.

Canada controlled the match statistically, leading in kills (37-24), blocks (7-3) and aces (4-1). Canada committed 19 errors, while Mexico registered 27.

Arthur Szwarc led Canada with 12 points, followed by Kale Orr with 11. For Mexico, Yasutaka Sanay and Juan García scored 9 points each.

Canada set the tone from the opening set, taking control early and never allowing Mexico to establish its rhythm. The Canadians maintained that pressure throughout the next two sets, using a more efficient attack and a stronger presence at the net to complete the straight-set victory.

“I think we were just looking to bounce back after a couple of tough five-set losses. The guys came ready to play; we simply played our volleyball and things went well. I think we always have confidence. We just go into the match wanting to play our game. We don’t think too much about things like not having the semifinal qualification secured yet—those are things we can’t control. We just focus on our game, and I feel that’s exactly what we did. We were focused on what was in front of us.”

Jesús Román Izaguirre Rodríguez – Mexico

“You always want to win, right? Sometimes things don’t go the way you want. It was definitely an important match, but we still have tomorrow, and we still have a chance to qualify. We need to play a good match against Guatemala and keep preparing for what’s ahead. As for the pressure of not having our semifinal spot secured yet, I think we’ll handle it well. We have many players who needed rest, and that’s really what we needed. Managing the pressure means focusing on ourselves and on what we have to do.”

Canada will face the Dominican Republic on Thursday, while Mexico will take on Guatemala.
