Canada Defeats United States to Secure Quarterfinal Berth

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, August 6, 2026. – Canada defeated the United States 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-20, 32-30) to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the Boys’ U17 Pan American Cup at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City.

The United States came out strong and controlled the opening set. Canada responded by making adjustments and taking control of the match, winning three closely contested sets. The fourth set provided the day’s most exciting finish, with both teams trading opportunities before Canada prevailed 32-30.

The United States must now await the outcome of the Mexico-Puerto Rico match to determine whether it advances directly to the semifinals or competes in the quarterfinals. Canada, meanwhile, has secured its place in the knockout round and now awaits both its quarterfinal opponent and its final position in Pool B.

Julian Josephs led Canada’s offense with 23 points, including four blocks. Bennett Krahn added 18 points, while Graydon Wallace contributed 13. Liam Bendavid also set a new tournament record with five blocks in a single match.

For the United States, Noah Mbaitoloum led all scorers with 23 points. Gabriele Desiderio continued his strong tournament with 18 points, including 15 attacks, one block and two aces, while Nikodem Opiola finished with 11 points.

Canada held the advantage in blocking (12-8), while the United States led in attacks (58-55). Both teams finished with two aces.

Canada head coach Jordan Taylor emphasized the significance of the victory and the experience gained by his team.

“The rivalry between Canada and the United States goes back a long way. It’s always a great challenge to play against one of the best volleyball nations in the world. It was an important test for us. We still have bigger matches ahead, but as we continue developing our Canadian athletes, we needed an experience like this. I’m very proud of our guys.”

United States head coach Michael Wall acknowledged Canada’s performance.

“Canada was better than us tonight. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other team. We tried to get things going, but we just couldn’t find our rhythm tonight. Credit to Canada. We’ll regroup and be ready to go tomorrow.”
