Canada Upsets USA, Dominican Republic Falls to Brazil

June 4, 2026. The second day of action in the opening week of the 2026 Women’s VNL produced major surprises, including Canada’s victory over the United States and the scare that the Dominican Republic gave Brazil in the opening set.

Canada Stuns the United States and Sweeps Them in Three Sets

For the first time in the history of the tournament, Canada beat the USA in women’s Volleyball Nations League at the Centre Videotron in Quebec City.

In Pool 1, in a NORCECA showdown, the host team surprised the United States by sweeping them in three hard-fought sets (25-22, 25-22, 30-28) to earn their first victory of this year’s Women’s VNL.

The Canadians were superior to the Americans in the team statistics, leading in attacks (40-34), blocks (10-7), and serves (5-2). They were also better in unforced errors, committing 25 compared to 29 by the Stars and Stripes.

For Canada, three players reached double digits in scoring. Opposite Kiera Van Ryk was the match’s top scorer with 17 points, including four blocks and one ace. Alexa Gray finished with 14 points, including two aces, while captain Emily Maglio added 13 points, including four blocks and one ace.

For the United States, Simone Lee and captain Jordan Thompson each finished with nine points. Lee recorded one block and scored her team’s only two aces of the match.

Canada will have a rest day on Friday, while the United States will face France at 8:00 p.m. local time.

After two matchdays, Canada sits in eighth place with a 1-1 record, while the United States is ninth with the same record.

Dominican Republic Scares Brazil but Falls in Four Sets

In Pool 2, being held in Brasilia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic got off to a strong start against the host nation, but from the second set on, the world’s second-ranked team regained its composure and defeated the Queens of the Caribbean 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-11, 25-15).

Brazil outperformed the Dominicans in the team statistics. In attacks, Brazil held a 59-32 advantage, while in blocks the margin was 15-9. Both teams finished with three aces, while the Caribbean side committed fewer unforced errors than Brazil, 21-26.

Dominican opposite Altagracia Alonzo delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 12 points, including two blocks, to lead the Caribbean team. Florangel Shaylin Terrero was the second-best scorer for the Dominicans with eight points.

On Friday, the Dominican Republic will face Bulgaria as they looks to improve its 0-2 record and move up the standings. After two matchdays, the Dominicans are in 15th place with one point, ahead of strong teams such as France, Thailand, and Bulgaria.
