July 17, 2026.- Cuba claimed a crucial 3-2 (17-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12) victory over Argentina on Friday, boosting its hopes of remaining in the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL).
The Cubans improved to 2 wins and 8 losses with only two matches remaining in the Preliminary Phase. They now sit in 16th place, ahead of Canada and China, and within striking distance of 15th-place Belgium.
Cuba still has to face Canada in a direct battle for survival, followed by Italy. The Caribbean side needs one more victory while also hoping Canada does not win its remaining two matches, including the head-to-head meeting between the two teams.
In the team statistics, Cuba outperformed Argentina in every category, leading 56-49 in attacks, 13-11 in blocks, and 11-6 in aces. Cuba committed 36 unforced errors, while Argentina made 24.
Marlon Yant was the star of the match with 28 points, including four blocks and three aces. Miguel Ángel López added 15 points, including three aces, while Jose Masso and Robertlandy Simón each finished with 12 points.
