Dominican Republic and United States Earn Hard-Fought Victories

July 10, 2026.- The Dominican Republic, playing in China, and the United States, competing in Japan, battled to five-set victories over Ukraine and Türkiye, respectively. The United States secured its place in the Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Finals, while the Dominican Republic took a major step toward preserving its place in next season’s competition by defeating a direct rival in the relegation battle.

The Dominican Republic defeated Ukraine 3-2 (25-17, 25-16, 22-25, 19-25, 15-13), moving firmly into the fight to remain in the Women’s VNL.

With the victory, the Dominicans improved to a 2-8 record, joining Thailand, Ukraine, France, and Bulgaria with two wins.

The Caribbean team held the edge in the team statistics, leading 63-62 in attacks and 16-8 in blocks, while Ukraine was better from the service line with five aces to four. The teams were evenly matched in unforced errors, although Ukraine committed two more than the Dominicans (23-21).

Dominican captain Brayelin Martínez delivered a spectacular performance with a match-high 29 points, including seven blocks. Yonkaira Peña added 11 points, Gaila González, who recently joined the exclusive 1,000-point VNL club, also scored 11, while Jineiry Martínez contributed 10 points.

United States Wins and Secures Spot in the Finals

The United States had to rally twice before defeating Türkiye 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 27-29, 25-21, 15-8) in a thrilling five-set battle.

With one Preliminary Phase match still to play, the Americans officially secured their place in the Women’s VNL Finals. At the time of publication, they also remained atop the standings with a 9-2 record.

Avery Skinner and Logan Eggleston each scored 19 points to lead the United States to victory. Opposite Jordan Thompson added 17 points, while Dana Rettke finished with 11.

The Americans capitalized on 33 unforced errors committed by Türkiye. In the team statistics, the United States held the advantage only in blocks (14-6), while Türkiye led in attacks (74-60) and service aces (8-7).
