LEÓN, Mexico, September 11, 2026.- Mexico made a convincing start to the 2026 Women’s Pan American Cup with a straight-set 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-11) victory over Costa Rica on Friday at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato.
Mexico set the pace from the opening set and built wide leads that Costa Rica was unable to close. The hosts remained in control throughout the match, backed by an offense that produced a 40-12 advantage in attacks.
Mexico’s dominance was also reflected at the net, with a 6-4 edge in blocks, and from the service line, with four aces to none for Costa Rica. Mexico also committed fewer errors, 16 compared to 25 by the Costa Ricans.
Uxue Guereca led Mexico’s offense with 11 points, while Aime Topete added 10. For Costa Rica, Krystel Vargas and Valeria Campos scored four points each.
On Saturday, Mexico (1-0) will face the United States (1-0) at 8:00 p.m. in a matchup between unbeaten Pool B teams. Costa Rica (0-1) will have a rest day.
Uxue Guereca, Mexico’s top scorer: “We’re very happy to be able to play at home. The fans who come out to support us have a big influence on our game and motivate us a lot. We came into this tournament really wanting to perform better than we did in previous competitions.”
Yuliana González, Costa Rica captain: “We expected more. It’s not an excuse, but we had some problems with our flights getting here to León. We’ve tried to stay strong and keep ourselves motivated. It’s been a difficult day, and we know we can give more.”
