SAN JUAN, Argentina, August 4, 2023.- Mexico defeated Chile in their first victory and the United States prevailed on 16 blocks over Egypt to move 2-0 at the FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship in San Juan, Argentina.
Mexico in Pool D defeated Chile 3-1 (25-14, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22) with advantages in attacks (48-36), in blocks (9-6) and points from serves (6-3). Chille committed fewer errors than Mexico (32-25).
Mexican outside hitter Ines Vargas topped all scorers with 23 points on 21 points from attacks, one block and once ace. Two other players finished with double digits, outside hitter Brandon Ramirez and opposite hitter Julio Serrano with 13 and 10 points respectively.
The U.S. in Pool A continued its strong start with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 26-24) win over Egypt, with a 37-33 advantage in kills, but a commanding 16-4 advantage in blocks was the key statistic. Four of those blocks came from setter Tread Rosenthal with middle blockers Tristan Whitfield and Kaumana Carreira each recording four also.
Outside hitter Sterling Foley led all scorers with 16 points on 13 kills, two blocks and one ace. Outside hitter Sean Kelly matched Foley with 13 kills.
Opposite Finn Kearney also reached double digits with 10 points on eight kills, one block and one ace.

In other results, Puerto Rico fell to Korea 0-3 (13-25, 18-25, 11-25) in Pool C and Costa Rica to Serbia 0-3 (13-25, 18-25, 15-25) in Pool A.
The action continues Saturday for Costa Rica (0-3) facing Egypt (1-1), and USA (2-0) faces host Argentina (2-0). Puerto Rico (1-2) and Mexico (1-2) will rest.
