SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, August 2, 2026.- Mexico opened the women’s volleyball tournament at the 25th Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 with a commanding 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-12) victory over Trinidad and Tobago, claiming the first win of the competition.
Although the score was level during the opening exchanges of the first set, Mexico quickly took control with a strong run fueled by its offense and serving. From that point on, the Mexicans dictated the pace of the match, kept constant pressure from the service line, and never allowed Trinidad and Tobago to mount a comeback.
Mexico held a commanding 42-14 advantage in kills while also leading in blocks (4-1) and aces (7-1). The Mexican squad committed 20 unforced errors, compared to 22 by Trinidad and Tobago.
Aimé Topete led Mexico’s offense with 16 points, while Karina Flores added 10. Kiune Fletcher was Trinidad and Tobago’s leading scorer with five points.
With the match well under control, Mexico’s coaching staff rotated several players into the lineup without any drop in intensity, as the team comfortably closed out the victory in three sets.
On the second day of Pool A action, Mexico will face Venezuela, while Trinidad and Tobago will look to rebound against Colombia.
Mexico’s captain Jocely Urías said the team achieved its objective of opening the tournament with a victory and highlighted how quickly the players adapted to the playing conditions.
“We’re happy to start the tournament with a victory. We knew we had to adjust quickly to a new environment and to a gym where the ball tends to float a lot. Now our focus is on the next opponent; we’ll take it one match at a time as we pursue another victory.”
Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago captain Renele Forde emphasized the development process her national team is undergoing.
“We have a very young team. Trinidad and Tobago has been going through a developmental phase for quite some time, and that’s probably one of the reasons I came back to join the team. I hope I can provide the mentorship and guidance these players need as they continue to grow.
I’m proud of the effort the team gave. I think some of our younger players experienced first-match nerves, but I also believe this match will provide valuable lessons that will help us continue to grow as the tournament progresses.”
