CHILE, August 12, 2026.- The United States remained unbeaten and advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship, while the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico will continue in the classification matches following the completion of the Round of 16 on Wednesday in Chile.
United States Remains Unbeaten
The United States defeated Argentina 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-15) to extend its unbeaten record and secure a place among the top eight teams in the championship.
Kari Knotts and Maya Ogbogu led the U.S. offense with 16 points each, while Julia Masselink added 13.
The United States outperformed Argentina in all three scoring categories, leading 47-29 in attacks, 8-5 in blocks and 9-3 in aces.
Following Thursday’s rest day, the United States will face Italy on Friday in the quarterfinals.
Dominican Republic Falls to Defending Champion
The Dominican Republic missed out on the quarterfinals after falling to defending champion China 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 25-19, 25-17).
The Dominicans responded after dropping the opening set, leveling the match with a 25-17 win in the second, but China took the next two sets to advance to the quarterfinals.
Captain Rayni Merab Mondesi Arias delivered another outstanding offensive performance for the Dominican Republic, scoring 31 points on 29 attacks and two blocks.
Mexico Defeats Algeria
Mexico defeated Algeria in straight sets 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-18) and will continue its participation in the World Championship classification matches.
The Mexican team controlled the match from the start and did not drop a set to earn another victory in the tournament.
Puerto Rico Falls to Tunisia in Five Sets
Puerto Rico battled Tunisia through five sets but ultimately fell 3-2 (26-24, 25-22, 17-25, 13-25, 15-12).
After dropping the first two sets, Puerto Rico responded by winning the third and fourth to force a fifth set. Tunisia ultimately secured the victory 15-12.
Puerto Rico, along with the Dominican Republic and Mexico, will continue in the classification matches.
Following Thursday’s rest day, competition will resume Friday with the quarterfinals and classification matches. The United States will face Italy for a place in the semifinals.
