GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, August 4, 2026. – Venezuela opened its campaign at the 2026 Boys’ U17 Pan American Cup with a convincing 3-0 (25-11, 25-7, 25-19) victory over Costa Rica, emerging as one of the leading contenders for the top spot in Pool A at Guatemala City’s Multi-Sport Dome.
The Venezuelans set the pace from the opening set with an effective offense and solid play at the net. They built a commanding offensive advantage in the first frame, recording 19 attack points to Costa Rica’s three, while also holding a 2-0 edge in blocks.
The South Americans maintained their superiority in the second set, extending their lead with consistent play in every aspect of the game. Costa Rica responded better in the third set and stayed closer on the scoreboard, but Venezuela’s offensive firepower secured the victory in straight sets.
Venezuela finished with commanding advantages in attacks (37-16) and blocks (8-0), while Costa Rica held a slight edge in service points (3-2). Unforced errors also favored the Venezuelans, as Costa Rica conceded 28 points compared to 18 by Venezuela.
Only two players reached double figures in scoring, both from Venezuela. Benjamín Josué García led all scorers with 14 points, while Alejandro Rondón added 12.
Ángel Echarre, Venezuela’s captain: “We played very well. We prepared hard for this tournament and played with great teamwork, like a family. We’ve been together for a long time. This tournament helps us prepare for the World Championship.”
Andy Mejía, Costa Rica’s captain: “We lacked intensity in the first two sets. We were playing too slowly and weren’t mentally sharp. It hurt us that they jumped out to leads of four or five points so quickly in each set.”
