Canada concludes Round Robin with victory

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, August 25, 2023.- Team Canada defeated Cuba 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-13) to end the regular series of the NORCECA Pan American Cup Final Six at the “Ricardo Arias” National Volleyball Palace.

The Cubans finished with a 2-3 win-loss record with a total of 10 points, while Canada obtained 8 points from 2 wins and 3 losses.

After losing the first two sets, the Canadians were able to recover to win the next three, beating Cuba 51-47 in spikes and 11-6 in serves, while in blocks they were even at 10.

Sydney Grills was the most outstanding for Canada with 20 points, while Nyadholi Thoktuom contributed with another 15. For the losing cause, Dezirett Madan added 21 points followed by Greisy Fine and Laura Suarez with 11 and 10 respectively.

Carolyn O’Dwyer, coach of Canada: I think one very positive thing was the way we battled throughout the game, after trailing 2-0 and continuing to fight and fight it was a very good thing to see in our group, win is not easy and I think one more victory for us is something positive.

Leivis García, coach of Cuba: The match was very good, I think we let Canada get ahead of us from a tactical point of view with the serve, we lowered our reception a lot and we ended up playing very noble with Canada and here there´s no weak opponent, here everyone plays volleyball.
