Honduras earns first victory

BELIZE CITY, Belize, August 09, 2023 – With a score of 3-0, Honduras managed to defeat El Salvador 25-22/25-23/26-24 in the second match of the fourth day of the XXII AFECAVOL Central American Men’s Volleyball Cup.

Honduras led in attacks 47-33, while blocks were in favor of El Salvador 9-7, and both teams tied in serves at 3.

El Salvador scored 24 points on Honduras’ errors, and Honduras earned 19 points from their opponent’s errors.

The top scorer of the match for Honduras was middle blocker Irvin Reyes, with 10 points from attacks, one from a block, and two from serves, totaling 13 points. For El Salvador, outside hitter Rodrigo Chávez scored 14 points, all from attacks.

On Thursday, August 10, Honduras will face Panama at 5:00pm, and El Salvador plays against Costa Rica at 2:30pm.

David Villatoro, outside hitter of Honduras: “The match was highly contested. We knew that El Salvador was a very strong opponent. Thankfully, things went our way to secure the result, and both teams put in great effort. We’re happy to obtain this victory for our country”.

Juan Carlos Vargas, setter of El Salvador: “Honduras is a worthy team that stood their ground with the determination they are known for. They played a smart game, and we adapted to their style of play, which ended up costing us. They defeated us in three sets. We tried a couple of variations, even in the third set, and still couldn’t overcome them. Our spirits are high, as we have two more days of competition against strong teams. We’re aiming for the medals; the competition is still ongoing”.
