SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, August 6, 2026. – Mexico advanced to the fifth-place match of the women’s volleyball tournament at the 25th Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 after defeating Trinidad and Tobago in straight sets 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-17).
Mexico controlled the match from the outset behind a strong offensive performance and effective serving. The Mexicans outscored Trinidad and Tobago 31-19 in attacks and held a commanding 12-2 advantage in aces. They also edged their opponents in blocking (6-5) while committing only 13 unforced errors compared to Trinidad and Tobago’s 26.
With the victory, Mexico will face the winner of the Costa Rica-Venezuela match for fifth place. Trinidad and Tobago will meet the loser for seventh place.
Uxue Guereca led Mexico’s offense with 11 points, while María Ximena Cruz added 10. Trinidad and Tobago’s Kiune Fletcher finished as the match’s leading scorer with 16 points.
Mexico’s Joseline Landeros said the coaching staff used the match to give playing time to athletes who had been waiting for their opportunity during the tournament.
“Nicola wanted to give an opportunity to the players who had been waiting for their chance to get on the court. This wasn’t the match we wanted to be playing or the objective we had set for ourselves, so all we can do is keep preparing and go after the next victory. We have important tournaments coming up this year, and we’ll continue working to achieve better results.”
For Trinidad and Tobago, Rayquelle Dickson praised her team’s determination despite the physical toll of the competition.
“I think we played with heart and the strength to fight until the end. Despite some minor injuries and knocks from previous matches, we were able to stay on our feet and keep going. I believe we could have done better, but we still gave it our best, and I’m proud of the way our team represented itself today.”
