SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, October 16, 2026.– The North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) expresses its deepest sorrow over the passing of Ángel Iglesias Guerra, a former member of Cuba’s men’s national volleyball team, distinguished sports administrator and former member of the NORCECA Board of Administration.
Iglesias Guerra dedicated much of his life to sports, building a career that encompassed his participation as a high-performance athlete, leadership roles in major Cuban sports institutions and contributions to international volleyball administration.
As a member of Cuba’s men’s national team, he earned bronze medals at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg and the 1970 Central American and Caribbean Games in Panama, representing a generation that contributed to the competitive development of Cuban volleyball.
Following his career as a player, he remained involved in sports through various institutional leadership positions. He served as Dean of the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences in Havana and as Vice President of Cuba’s National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER).
In recognition of his career and contributions to volleyball, he received the Cuban Volleyball Centennial Medal in 2006, an honor awarded to individuals who played a significant role in the development of the sport.
His commitment to volleyball also extended to the international level. During the 18th NORCECA Congress, held in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, in October 2005, he was elected to the Confederation’s Board of Administration for the 2005–2009 term, representing Cuba.
NORCECA honors the legacy of Ángel Iglesias Guerra, whose dedication to sports, both on and off the court, made a valuable contribution to Cuban and regional volleyball.
NORCECA President Cristóbal Marte Hoffiz, on behalf of the Executive Committee, the Board of Administration and the entire NORCECA volleyball family, extends his heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the Cuban sports community during this time of profound loss.
May he rest in peace.
