SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, August 7, 2026. – Central American volleyball and the NORCECA Confederation are mourning the passing of distinguished Costa Rican sports leader Edgar Alvarado Ardón, who dedicated much of his life to the development and strengthening of volleyball in Costa Rica and throughout the region.
Don Edgar, as he was respectfully and affectionately known within the volleyball family, passed away in Costa Rica following an illness, leaving behind an important legacy as a sports leader at the national, Central American and continental levels.
Throughout his extensive career, he held important positions within volleyball organizations. He served as President of the Costa Rican Volleyball Federation (FECOVOL) and the Association of Central American Volleyball Federations (AFECAVOL), in addition to serving as a member of the FIVB Board of Administration. He was also distinguished as Honorary President of AFECAVOL and Honorary Vice President of NORCECA.
His ties to AFECAVOL spanned decades. In various positions, Alvarado played an important role in the growth and consolidation of the Central American organization and contributed to strengthening the bonds among the national federations of the region.
NORCECA President Cristóbal Marte Hoffiz expressed his profound sorrow over the passing of a man with whom he shared many years as a volleyball leader and who was also a personal friend.
“This is a very sad day for NORCECA. We have lost a decent man, a personal friend and someone who contributed enormously to strengthening volleyball in his country, in AFECAVOL and in NORCECA. Don Edgar dedicated a great part of his life to our sport and leaves a legacy that will always be remembered. Today, with great sorrow, we say goodbye to our Honorary Vice President and, above all, to a great friend,” Marte Hoffiz said.
As a sign of respect, the teams and those in attendance honored his memory with a minute of silence prior to the match between Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago for seventh place in the women’s volleyball tournament of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 at the Ricardo Gioriver Arias Volleyball Palace.
His passing brings profound sadness to those who shared with him through the different stages of the growth of Central American volleyball. His work, dedication and commitment are part of the history of Costa Rican volleyball, AFECAVOL and NORCECA.
The NORCECA Volleyball Confederation extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, the Costa Rican Volleyball Federation and the entire volleyball family of Costa Rica.
