SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, June 26, 2023. – Puerto Rico aiming to defend their title at the Men’s Volleyball tournament of the 24th edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador, El Salvador to be played at the Sports Palace Carlos El Famoso Hernández from June 28 to July 2.
Puerto Rico is one of the eight teams competing in men’s volleyball, who recovered their title in the past edition of the Games held in Barranquilla, Colombia in 2018. Puerto had Rico lost to the Dominican Republic in 2014 in Veracruz, Mexico, coming from winning three titles in a row (2002, 2006, 2010), for an overall of five titles.
Defending champion Puerto Rico will play in Pool B alongside the team of Centro Caribe Sports (Guatemala), Trinidad &Tobago, and host country El Salvador. Pool A consists of Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Suriname.
The winners from each pool will advance directly into the tournaments’ semifinals, while teams place in second and third place will compete in the quarterfinals.
Speaking about the historic winners of the Games, Cuba has won on ten occasions, including nine in a row from 1966 to 1998; in the past edition of 2018 they finished fourth falling to Mexico in the bronze medal match. Mexico follows Cuba with six titles.
Four daily matches are scheduled and the opening match is set to start at 10:30 local time on Wednesday June 28, between Mexico and Dominican Republic, followed by Cuba and Suriname at 13:30. Current champion Puerto Rico will follow at 17:00 against Guatemala, and host El Salvador will face Trinidad & Tobago at 20:00.
