Puerto Rico stopped Dominican Republic at U21 Pan American Cup

HAVANA. Cuba, June 6, 2023.- Puerto Rico defeated Dominican Republic in straight sets 25-10, 25-20 and 25-16 in their first success in pool A at the U21 Men’s Norceca Pan American Cup at the city capital wide Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum.

Puerto Ricans prevailed in every element over a Dominican squad without their usual combative energy and who showed early in the game their poor passing and reception, which their opponents took advantage of.

Outside hitter Axel Meléndez with 13 pinta and 11 from middle Janlvar Figueroa were the most outstanding players of their team, while Dominican captain Ronny Molina tallied 12, despite no having his best day, just like his teammates.

Carlos Rodríguez,Puerto Rican coach rated the match as refreshing and valued that “Dominican Republic is a group with many resources, with time they will improve their performance. We were able to establish our game on serves. Two of our middles will arrive today Tuesday. Against Canada we played only with one middle. We are improving our rhythm”.

Team captain Antonio Luis Feliciano said “today we had well elaborated game plan, because we were able to study Dominican Republic and we saw they don’t dominate their passing too much, so we needed to get them out of system”. We felt tired, yesterday the match lasted three hard, but after this win we will rest better”.

Ronny Molina, Dominican captain said “we wanted the victory but it wasn’t possible. We have much more to give and we didn’t and we committed too many technical errors which caused us the loss”.

Coach Dante Mañón regreted his team’s performance. “We didn’t attack as we should against an opponent who was tired from yesterday, but the tension took over them and they weren’t visible on court. Our reception was null, I had to switch the setter twice and both did bad. They are tall and it was hard to attack from the outside. Tomorrow’s match against Canada is crucial”.

Canada controlled a resilient Haiti at the U21 Men’s Pan American Cup

HAVANA, Cuba, June 6, 2023.- Canada’s national team earned their second victory in pool A at the U21 Men’s Pan American Cup after controlling a resilient Haiti 25-19, 25-17 and 25-20.

The Caribbeans had more positive moments than they did on opening day because of their opponents exhaustion who less than 24 hours ago had an intense five-set battle against Puerto Rico. But the level of play, preparation and skills shown by the tall Canadian players to score on advantages are in attacks (46-25) and serves (7-2), and a slightly balanced block (5-4).

The two leading scorers with 11 points each, Canadian outside hitter Reeve Gingera and Hati’s opposite Estakend Beauvoir, the only ones with double figures.

Cory Schoenherr and Devin Cooney of Canada stopped Haiti’s attackers

Arnd Ludwing, coach of Canada said that yesterday that had a long game and his players were too tired “it was evident in the first set, but we recovered and won. Now we continue with the next match”.

Team captain Jacob complied with his coach. “Yesterday we played five intense sets, but today we overcame our opponents, we played focused and with the win we remain undefeated”.

Haiti’s coach, Junior Siole said, “I wanted to see my team’s performance against an opponent like Canada, and according to the results make a projection for tomorrow against Puerto Rico, another strong opponent”.

Dieulengy Relis, leading the Caribbeans said “we feel better today and we played with more quality than yesterday. We can put up a fight against the opponents because we play with love, unity and battling hard”.

In the second set we committed more errors than we should’ve”.

Team captain of the host, setter Yonni Jesús Iglesias opinion was “the match was comfortable, we relaxed and played like we are used to. This year during preparation we are set to reach the podium and come out to battle with our all for first place”.

Coach of the opponent, Luis Fernando Casteñeda, said “we are aware that Cuba is an excellent team, but what’s important for us is competing, it’s the only way for athletes to develop and even more for those who are here for the first time. We always take out the best of the match”.

Adolfo Rivas, Guatemala’s captain, was happy to say, “we resisted against Cuba, even if they are a strong team, but what’s important is to play and tomorrow we are waiting to see what happens”.

United States without setbacks against Nicaragua at U21 Men’s Pan Am Cup

HAVANA, Cuba, June 5, 2023.- Defending champions United States opened the U21 Men’s Volleyball Norceca Pan American Cup without setbacks against Nicaragua in pool B at the large multi sport coliseum in Ciudad Deportiva.

The numbers reflect the Americans superiority in attacks (43-16), blocks (6-3) and serves (6-1), however in which for a little over an hour they tried strategies for their future games, while for Nicaragua it represented a luxury for their improvement facing the tournament favorite.

The team with eight players with more than two meters of height had outside hitter Kyle Teune and middle Owen Rose as their leading scorers, both with 11 points, while for the Central Americans Denis Espinoza with 7 was the who scored the most for his team.

Trenton Moser of USA against Evans Solis of NCA

Teune said “it was a fun match, yesterday we prepared well, we worked on communication and things turned out well. We tried to give the best of ourselves, to follow the most we could, but we respect all our opponents equally. We will always come out to give our best. I love being once again in Havana, I enjoy the coliseum’s  atmosphere a lot”.

His coach Andy Read, considered that “it was a good match, it was the first time for many players, and we tried that everyone makes the most out of it. Yes, I saw Canada and Puerto Rico, they are both very good teams, and we will face one of them and we hope that all goes better”.

The Central American coach, Jorge Luis Mena expressed his satisfaction of having the opportunity to face teams with the level of play like the Americans. “The game was the way it had to be, and slowly the opponent took us to their rhythm, but we are here to take advantage of games like the one against Guatemala. We are preparing to defend our U23 Central American title that we won last year”.

Víctor Ariel Cruz, captain of Nicaragua, expressed “we had the opportunity to face the defending champion, and I am glad about my teammates’ performance because we win as a team in learning and to keep on developing in the sport”.

Canada won intense three-hour battle to Puerto Rico at U21 Pan American Cup

LA HABANA, Cuba, 5 de junio de 2023.- Canada defeated Puerto Rico in intense three hour battled five sets on the first day of the U21 Men’s Norceca Pan American Cup taking place at Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum.

The North Americans dominated by a 26-28, 27-25, 22-25, 25-19 and 19-17 score in a challenge where they were superior in attacks (66-55), blocks (10-7) and serves (10-7), and surprisingly committed much more unforced errors than Puerto Rico (45-33).

After two and a half hours went by they showed a much more exciting closing in which both teams were one point away of winning, but neither on did until the Canadian team, bronze in 2022, not only took advantage of their height and skills, but they had the necessary balance to combine the plays that gave the win.

Outside hitter Jacob Sargent with a height of two meters, was the leading scorer of the match with 27 points, including two blocks and three aces. Followed by opposite Mills (15), middle Cory Schoenherr (14) and outside hitter Kaden Schmidt (11).

Standing out for the Caribbean team, opposite Gregory Torres (26), joined by outside hitters Antonio Luis Feliciano (14) and Axel Gabriel Meléndez (10).

Cory Schoenherr of Canada against Puerto Rico’s block

Arnd Ludwing, coach of Canada, I value that “it was a really good match to start off the tournament, hard because of the close scores, mostly the first sets. Puerto Rico moved forward, we got worried, and they took control again, but in the end, I believe we won because we played as a team. Our physical attribute wasn’t our best skill, nor many blocks, however because it’s high it helped our defense to move better”.

Jacob Sargent, captain of the North Americans, considered that “we started too soft, our opponents noticed it, but we went on improving little by little, and I believe we won because some of our passes weren’t too comfortable for them, and it was much easier for us to attack and score”.

Carlos Rodríguez, coach of Puerto Rico, considered “we lost a bit of concentration at the end of the match about deciding where the receiving was, but this is a team with little preparation, and gave a great performance because in the end it could’ve gone our way. I think we did a great job today and this is just starting”.

Arturo Luis Feliciano, team captain, said about Canada that they are a great team, with tall players and strength, with stability, but I think the key to the game was perseverance and focusing on serves and reception, and that pushed us to reach the tie-break. In the end we could’ve won, but those are errors that can happen to any team, errors to be analyzed and then they must not happen again”.

HAVANA, Cuba, June 5, 2023.- Dominican Republic opened with a 3-0 victory over Haiti at the Men’s U21 Norceca Pan American Cup at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum.

Ronny Molina (DOM) against triple block of Haiti

Molina, Dominican captain, said “we are focused on winning because all matches are important and today, we won. Now ouf goal is Puerto Rico, we must prepare on focusing better for tomorrow”.

Junior Sieole, coach of Haiti, spoke about the new rule proposed in March by the FIVB for the upcoming U19 and U21 world championships, and that the continental confederations must put in practice during these tournaments, the new rule is that the service reception is only permitted by a digging action or any action that does not involve overhand fingers.

“I think that uneven the team a bit, as well as some errors we committed in tactical plays, otherwise perhaps we could have had a better result”.

Team captain Relis also referred to the new rule proposal, “but tomorrow we hop to do better”.

Several aiming the podium at U21 Pan American Cup in Havana

HAVANA, Cuba, June 4, 2023.- Several teams competing at the U21 Men’s Norceca Pan American Cup are aiming to reach the podium, firmly expressed coaches of the United States, Canada and Cuba, while others wish for their teams to take some wins.

Carlos Rodríguez, coach of Puerto Rico: “We’ve had a short time of preparation, most of the players study in the United States. We are here to work, this group has suffered the effects of the pandemic, and this is their first competition, they are anxious to play. Offensively my team has strength, and we work well receiving as well, and it will be key to look for a victory. There are teams with great level, but anything can happen, and we will do our best effort and put on a spectacle”.

Dante Mañon, coach of Dominican Republic: “Our goal is to prepare the team, it’s almost entirely new because four of its members are in Colombia with the senior team training for the Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador. This Cup gives us the right to be next year at the Norceca U21 Continental Championship, a qualifier for the age-group 2024 world championship. That’s why they can have the necessary experience”.

Andy Read, coach of United States: “We are here to defend the title we won last year and that’s why we brought a strong team with players that block well and also have a good serve”.

Arnd Ludwing, coach of Canada: “This tournament serves as preparation for the U21 World Championship in Bahrain next July. We held two weeks of training with 16 players, now we have these 12. This Cup will help them unite as a team. Last year also in Havana the team claimed the bronze medal, this time around we want to improve that position”.

Teams (DOM) going through preliminary inquiry

Sartre Derisier, coach of Haiti: “This is a good tournament and well organized, and nice because it gathers players of the region. We feel well with the opportunity provided by Norceca to be in these tournaments with teams of great level, coaches also improve and we all enjoy these events”.

Luis Fernando Castañeda, coach of Guatemala: “It’s important to compete in these tournaments because they help us improve in ranking. Sadly, four members of the team aren’t here because five players are going to the Final Four and are preparing for the Central American and Caribbean Games of El Salvador. Still, we brought players that will gain experience who we continue to develop”.

Axel Enrique Zamora, coach of Nicaragua: “Our team is made of really good players, who are preparing to defend our Central American U23 title. So this experience comes Handy”.

Jesús Cruz, coach of Cuba: “This team is based on last year’s one, now four under-19 players will be practicing for other age-group competitions, because next year we have to compete at the U21 world championship qualifier, and they need to be familiar with the level of play. This Cup also serves to evaluate some players. We are aware that the United States and Canada are the main opponents, we will fight to reach the podium and that way we will take out the bad taste of our fourth-place finish in 2022”.

USA’s Miles Partain & Andrew Benesh win Bronze in Ostrava

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic, June 4, 2023.- Miles Partain & Andrew Benesh of the United States won the bronze medal at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite16 men’s tournament on Sunday in Ostrava.

Miles Partain & Andrew Benesh, seeded 13th in the main draw bracket, made their way to the podium after starting their Ostrava quest from Wednesday’s qualifiers. Their bronze was the pair’s second medal on the Beach Pro Tour, after the gold they took at the first Dubai Challenge in October.

Partain & Benesh had to go against home favourites Ondrej Perusic & David Schweiner and the fantastic Ostrava crowd on the centre court stands that cheered the Czech team on. However, that seemed to be counter-productive for the Perusic & Schweiner this time as they made far too many unforced errors allowing the Americans to dominate throughout the match and celebrate a 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) upset of the fourth-seeded opponents.

Schweiner was the best scorer of the match with 18 points, while defender Perusic finished with seven. Benesh had 15 and Partain – 13.

In the semifinals Partain & Benesh took the first set of that match, but then Qatar’s Cherif Younousse & Ahmed Tijan fought back to win it by 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 15-9). Ahmed outscored everyone on the court with 23 points, including an ace, while Cherif raised three kill blocks and also aced once to tally 17 points to his name. Benesh finished with 22 points, while Partain added another 15.

Reigning Olympic and world champions, FIVB World Ranking leaders and defending Ostrava trophy-holders Anders Mol & Christian Sorum of Norway won the gold medal over  Cherif & Ahmed 2-1 (21-15, 19-21, 15-12).

Terese Cannon & Sarah Sponcil started their Ostrava campaign from Wednesday’s qualifiers and made it all the way to Sunday’s final. It was the fourth Beach Pro Tour podium for their team. Tokyo 2020 Olympian Sponcil had already been on the Ostrava podium once, as she and her previous partner Kelly Claes (now Cheng) took the 2021 4-star gold in the Czech city, which is when they qualified for the Games in Japan.

Also from the qualifiers, Melissa Humana-Paredes & Brandie Wilkerson, completed the podium with bronze. It was only the third Beach Pro Tour appearance for the recently formed pairing of Canadian Olympians and they already have their first medal. Brandie had a 2018 4-star silver from Ostrava with Heather Bansley.

Melissa and Brandie Canada, bronze medal

Cannon & Sponcil, seeded bottom 16th in the main draw bracket, dominated the first set of Sunday’s big final against Ana Patricia & Duda, but the top-seeded Brazilians fought back to triumph after a 2-1 (17-21, 21-14, 15-12) victory, mostly thanks to their solid performance in offence.

In the bronze medal match, fifth-seeded Nina Brunner & Tanja Huberli of Switzerland had control over the scoreboard only during the first few rallies of the first set, but then 13th-seeded Melissa & Brandie pushed forward on all counts and dominated the rest of the game on the way to a 2-0 (21-16, 21-14) shutout.

Earlier in the semifinals, Cannon & Sponcil opened for the day with a hard-fought 2-1 (19-21, 23-21, 15-13) comeback against Melissa & Brandie.

Having started off their Ostrava campaign with a straight-set victory over the world’s number three team Barbara Seixas & Carol Solberg of Brazil on Thursday, Hughes & Cheng continued their Pool C journey with two more shutouts on Friday. First, the Americans mastered a 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) win over Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallists Taliqua Clancy & Mariafe Artacho Del Solar of Australia, seeded third in Ostrava, taking advantage of the many unforced errors of the opponents. Then, they dominated over compatriots Betsi Flint & Julia Scoles on the way to a 2-0 (21-13, 21-11) sweep. The three-way tie between the remaining teams in the pool was resolved on point ratio in favour of Clancy & Mariafe for the runner-up spot and Scoles & Flint for the third place, leaving Barbara & Carol out of contention.

Melissa & Brandie followed up on their two straight-set wins on Thursday with another one on Friday to top the final Pool D standings on a flawless record. The Canadian qualifiers handed another shutout, 2-0 (21-19, 21-16), to fourth-seeded Agatha Bednarczuk & Rebecca Cavalcanti of Brazil.

In what proved to be a crucial battle for the third place in the pool, USA’s Kristen Nuss & Taryn Kloth claimed a 2-0 (23-21, 21-9) win over European champions Anastasija Samoilova & Tina Graudina of Latvia, their first of the tournament, but enough to overtake the opponents in the standings and send them home.

Spectacular Hancock leads USA to another dramatic victory

ANTALYA, Türkiye, June 2, 2023.- Led by their talented setter Micha Hancock the Olympic champions the United States topped Italy in the tie-breaker to remain undefeated surviving  their second big test in three days on Friday and continue on a roll in the opening week of the Volleyball Nations League 2023 in Antalya, Türkiye.

Two days after making their debut in this year’s edition of the tournament with a dramatic five-set victory over reigning world champions Serbia, the Americans played another tie-breaker in order to overcome defending VNL champions Italy 3-2 (25-16, 14-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-9) in Pool 1 at the Antalya Sports Hall.

Setter and team captain Micha Hancock ran the American offense brilliantly, having all her five starting hitters leave the court with more than ten points. The 30-year-old, left-handed setter also scored a couple of points herself, with a kill and a block.

“It was an all-team effort,” she said. “Everyone was ready to come off the bench. Italy is a great team and a lot of us play club there, so they know us well. It’s always interesting when we play them, so I knew that getting everyone involved would make the match harder for them. My job is pretty easy. All these girls have very long arms, so all I have to do is get the ball up for them. We have a relentless attitude when we’re all together and it’s just fun to see a bunch of young girls doing so well.”

Getting on the end of Hancock’s sets, outside hitters Khalia Lanier (16 points) and Veronica Perry-Jones (15), middle blockers Dana Rettke (14) and Asjia O’Neal (11) and opposite Annie Drews (12) all reached double digits in scoring.

Despite the defeat, Italy had three top scorers in the match in opposite Sylvia Nwakalor, who scored 20 points (17 kills, three blocks), and outside hitters Loveth Omoruyi and Myriam Sylla, who produced 17 and 16, respectively.

The number of errors produced by the Italians proved to be the major difference in the match as the Europeans handed 31 points to the Americans, who generated 22 for their opponents. There was great balance in kills, with Italy leading 60-58, blocks, with nine for each side, and aces, with the Europeans having a 4-3 advantage.

Drews and rookies push USA to big win over Serbia

ANTALYA, Türkiye, May 31, 2023.- The Olympic champion opposite had help from newcomers Skinner and Lanier as the Americans defeated the world champions in Antalya, Türkiye.

Helped by a pair of talented new faces, Annie Drews shone the brightest in the duel between the reigning Olympic champions and the defending world champions on the second day of the Volleyball Nations League 2023 and led the United States to a big win over Serbia in Antalya, Türkiye, on Wednesday.

The Pool 1 encounter held at the Antalya Sports Hall ended with a five-set (25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-12) victory for the Americans, who started their push to return to the top of the podium in the VNL with a strong result – they won gold in 2018, 2019 and 2021 before finishing fifth in 2022.

One of three Olympic champions selected by head coach Karch Kiraly to lead a young roster in the opening week of the VNL in Antalya, Drews embraced the responsibility and tallied a match-high 25 points in the American win – the 29-year-old opposite had 22 kills, two aces and one block in the duel with the Serbians.

The Americans had several other individual standouts in their big victory over Serbia and among them were 24-year-old rookie outside hitters Avery Skinner and Khalia Lanier, who delivered 19 and 16 points respectively in their first VNL match.

“I think that for us it was just about focusing on our side,” Skinner commented. “We couldn’t control what Serbia was doing and they were playing an amazing match. We just realized what we could do and fought together. We had a lot of players coming in and making so much of a difference. This is really important and will carry us far. Everyone came in very confident and did what they had to do to help us. I think Khalia and I, with this being our first VNL match, we just tried to play with no pressure. We had nothing to lose, so we played really free and that helped us.”

Other key contributors to the American victory were middle blocker Brionne Butler, who dominated the net with eight blocks to go with five kills, setter and captain Micha Hancock, who besides running the team’s offense also scored three points, and libero Justine Wong-Orantes, who did a solid job on the backcourt.

Blocking was a major difference between the teams as the Americans produced 13 stops to eight from the Europeans. The Olympic champions were also better offensively (67 to 61 kills), but the Serbians were slightly more productive from the service line (six aces to five) and got more points from opponent errors (27 to 20).

Serbian captain Ana Bjelica led her team’s offense, producing 19 points with 17 kills and two aces. Outside hitters Bianka Busa (15) and Sara Lozo (12) and middle blocker Maja Aleksic (13) also scored in double digits in the first match of the world champions under the guidance of Italian head coach Giovanni Guidetti.

Serbia had won the three most recent encounters with the Americans, having knocked the Olympic champions out of the VNL 2022 in the quarterfinals and ending their 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship run in the semifinals.

“Mexico has a group of experienced players, and we want to include young players behind them so the team can grow” he commented.

In the gold medal match we’re going to come out with a lot of fight, it’s going to be great no matter who our opponent is”.

Dan Fisher, coach of United States: “I think our zone four attackers had hit for a high percentage this tournament, they’ve been carrying a big load and Chloe is a big part of that. Cuba made a nice adjustment putting in number 6 (De La Peña) she affected the game and we just had to stay patient”.

Wilfredo Robinson, coach of Cuba: “We faced the team with the highest level of play in the tournament, they have height and dominate both complexes, their serves are directed, and their blocks are hermetic as their defense. We couldn’t work in the first two sets; we didn’t take any advantage in counter attacking. In the third set we defended well and we were able to recover, the serves worked well too. Despite the loss we showed we can play, what’s left is to continue working”.

William Robinson, head coach of Cuba: “It was a good start, I expected more from them because they have more power blocking and serving. USA (7) MCKENNA WUCHERER ATACKS

Rachel Fairbanks, captain of United States: “I was a solid win. One of our main focuses is being a more aggressive team and we did a good job of that, we could have improved in small balls, getting small tips. We love celebrating and it was a fun game”.

Dan Fisher, head coach of United States: “I liked that we were consistent, we didn’t give up a lot of runs in a row and that we were able to get a lot of players in; we’ll see how it goes. This is going to be a long tournament because we’re going to play every single day, maybe two times in a day so I think how we managed the load of the players was important”.

William Fernández, head coach of Guatemala: “The team started out shy because they were facing the champion of this age-group, a world power and senior Olympic champion, it’s a strong physical team and good technically. Guatemala was able to control the receiving on moments and that helped us play, we must improve in receiving to execute better”.

Newcomers Portes-Martinez win NORCECA Beach Tour in Varadero

VARADERO, Cuba, May 14, 2023.- NORCECA Beach Tour newcomers, Lázaro Portes and Daniel Martínez of Cuba surprised in their two last performances, sensationally conquering the second stage.

The victory of Portes and his giant partner (2.17 meters tall) over the experienced USA’s Troy Field and Tucker Silila in three exciting sets (21-18, 19-21, 15-10) in 55 minutes, was unexpected.

«I believe it was a tactical performance and not taking in account our physical preparation and technique, and how we might benefit from our height, we also had to think about what to do on the court», said Martínez Campos, son of Mabel, former player of many national indoor teams.

Nevertheless, their amazing feat was beating the Cuban A team of Noslen Díaz and Jorge Luis Alayo, who in 2022 won four NORCECA Tour medals, the NORCECA world championship qualifier, ranked 17 in worlds and champions of the I Junior Central American and Caribbean Sea and Beach Games of Santa Marta, Colombia, and this year newcomers at the Beach Pro Tour with an outstanding performance.

Portes and Martinez didn’t think of their opponent’s history nor their condition of tournament favorites. They followed coaches Alvarez Cutiño and Walfrido Salas instructions just to play. They remained connected, determined, and in 42 minutes they earned the sensational victory 21-14 and 21-18.

Varadero Men’s Gold Medal Match

«I am excited to have beat our compatriots, who we respect because in such a short time they have significant results, it’s wonderful», Lazaro expressed, who is shorter but skillful which combines with Daniel’s extraordinary height.

Just like in last years’ first time competing, Diaz and Alayo couldn’t win in Varadero, but they claimed the bronze once again after dominating Mexicans Jorge Barajas and Gabriel Cruz 21-16 and 21-18 in 36 minutes .

Precisamente Barajas y Cruz cayeron en la otra semifinal frente a los norteños Field y Tucker en dos parciales por 2-0 (14-21, 19-21).

Fifth place went to Canadians Jake MacNeil and William Russell, who without setbacks defeated Dominicans Oscar Martínez and Francisco de Jesús Goris 2-0 (21-11, 21-15).

Full results of this phase are at Cuba 2023 NORCECA Beach Tour.

USA wins second consecutive gold at U19 Pan American Cup

Edivaldo Bonilla, coach Costa Rica: “I am impressed with my team’s performance. They played the first two sets very well, and the third set could have gone either way and in the end Puerto Rico closed. Elena García, captain of Puerto Rico: “I believe our service and receiving could have been more effective, but we left everything on the court, and we represented Puerto Rico with pride. USA defeats Costa Rica in three sets to reach the Gold Medal match

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 13, 2023.- United States defeated Costa Rica in three sets 25-14, 25-20, 25-6 to reach the gold medal match of the Girls’ U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup in Puerto Rico.

This is the second time in a row that the United States reaches a final and will battle for the title they won last year in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while Costa Rica is making history reaching their first medal match. Both await their opponent between Puerto Rico and Mexico.

The Americans held huge margins over Costa Rica, kills  (36-11), blocks (6-0) and aces (19-2), but Costa Rica committed fewer errors (14-27).

Abigail Vander Wal, outside hitter of USA was the only player who scored double figures, with 12 points on 9 kills and three aces. Blair Bayless contributed with 9 points and Loganlynn Parks scored 7 points, including a match-high of 5 aces.

LoganLynee Parks, USA, spikes

Abigail Vander Wal, top scorer of United States: “Our energy was a lot better in the third set; in the second set we had miscommunications, and it just wasn’t going right. I’m sure we can keep our energy going into the gold medal match. We served tough in the last game and it’s definitely one of our strengths”.

Keegan Cook, coach of United States: “Costa Rica has had a wonderful tournament, in the second set they had a nice service-pressure, they didn’t stop playing after a difficult first set, so I give them the credit and our communication was poor. It was a nice response in the third set after I told them it didn’t send a nice message for tomorrow. I believe Puerto Rico is the most improved team in the tournament and if we face them tomorrow, we’ll need to do our best; it’s the match you hope to play in front of the home crowd. These are young teams and they’re learning the difference between expectations and aspirations, certainly many expect a lot from them, but this is just a small step in their careers”.

Keisy Fernández, setter of Costa Rica: “After losing two sets we lost energy. I think the United States had a lot of energy in the third set hence the score difference. Tomorrow we are coming with a good attitude to battle for the bronze medal, we are going to watch the other semifinal to prepare for either one. We want to win a medal for Costa Rica”.

Canada will face Dominican Republic for fifth place

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 13, 2023.- Canada beat the U.S. Virgin Islands in straight sets 25-12, 25-16 and 25-13 to play for fifth place against the Dominican Republic at the Girls’ U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup in Puerto Rico.

Canada fell to the Dominican Republic in the preliminary round and will battle on Sunday for a different outcome to take fifth place. While the U.S. Virgin Islands will meet with Honduras for position seven of the tournament.

Canada presented a different line-up to come out on top mostly from the service line with a 22-5 margin, and leading 23-18 in kills. Both teams scored 4 points from blocks, but Canada limited their errors to 14 against 26.

Canadian opposite hitter Abagayle Guezen scored 10 aces from her 19 points as the leading scorer of the match. Middle blocker Isabella Tehrani tallied 11 points and outside hitter Sophia Hansen added 6 points.

Anna Gillens led the U.S. Virgin Islands with 11 points on 9 kills and 2 aces.

Krystal Eddy ISV and Sophia Magus CAN, battling the ball

Misha Hameed, libero of Canada: “I am very proud of my team, we pulled out a strong win today and we like to continue building on our performances. I am looking forward for tomorrow’s match against the Dominican Republic, we’re looking to push ourselves to a new level and hopefully come out with fifth place”.

Jadyn Webb, libero of U.S. Virgin Islands: “Canada is a great team. Our team has made a couple of changes in the last days of practice, and we have adjusted to them. We are still working on minimizing unforced errors and we’re getting better each day. Tomorrow, we want to commit less errors in serves, clean up serve-receive and put pieces together to come out with a win”.

Dominican Republic will play for fifth place

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 13, 2023.- Dominican Republic will play for the fifth place after defeating Honduras 3-0 (25-9, 25-9, 25-7) of the Girls’ U19 NORCECA Pan American Cup in Puerto Rico.

Dominican Republic will face the winner between Canada and the U.S. Virgin Islands for the fifth place of the tournament.

Crismeily Paniagua, DOM, defense

Marcos Macedo, coach of Dominican Republic: “Tomorrow will be our final, we will come for the best result possible in the tournament which is fifth place. Yesterday against Costa Rica was atypical, they played well and battled a lot, in the end they deserved the victory. Now is the moment to study, look where we committed errors, and learn. All athletes have defeats, and they must learn to improve, maybe without a negative outcome, they couldn’t grow”.

Marvin Ulloa, coach of Honduras: “It was a bad performance; I understand my team being afraid of Dominican Republic because their level has dropped a lot. On the occasions we had control of the ball we were able to attack, we scored aces and we blocked, but they were afraid to receive. I believe we will face the U.S. Virgin Islands tomorrow, they are strong and tall, but with technical deficiencies, if my girls come with energy we can perform well”.

Costa Rica causes major upset to Dominican Republic and moves into semifinals

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 12, 2023.- Costa Rica caused a major upset defeating Dominican Republic in five thrilling sets 3-2 (20-25, 28-26, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13) to move into semifinals of the U19 Girls NORCECA Pan American Cup in Puerto Rico.

Costa Rica will face the United States in semifinals, while Dominican Republic will play the classification matches for positions five to eight. The other semifinal will be between the host Puerto Rico and Mexico, who earlier won their quarterfinal also in five sets to Canada.

Costa Rica had the personality and enough energy to keep the scores close dominating Dominican Republic who struggled to find their usual rhythm of play.

The Central American champions held advantage over Dominican Republic on multiple occasions during their performance, solving with a comfortable 13-8 margin in serves and allowing 36 points from errors. Dominican Republic led in attacks 53-21 and 11-10 in blocks, committing 33 unforced errors.

Angélica Rodriguez of Costa Rica celebrates huge win of Costa Rica over Dominican Republic

Angélica Rodríguez, captain of Costa Rica: “The key to our success today was attitude. We never gave up. We were aware of the great team they are, the good players they have and their prototype, but we never stopped believing in ourselves. I want to thank my team’s effort; I was confident in myself and what I did was transmit that security and confidence to my team”.

Ailyn Liberato, captain of Dominican Republic: “Our game level was too low, because of our excess of confidence. Costa Rica had more desire to win, they wanted to battle more than us, they left all on the court, a respectful opponent”.

Edivaldo Bonilla, coach of Costa Rica: “As the tournament develops, the team is growing and looking better. Maybe from ten matches we play against Dominican Republic me might win one and it was today, a historic win for our volleyball. I want to thank all the coaches who have taught these girls from little, it’s a recognition to their work and today we are enjoying the win. Tomorrow we will face the best team of the area and we will come out to compete”.

JUANA DIAZ, Puerto Rico, May 12, 2023.- Mexico reached the semifinals with a dramatic five-set quarterfinal win over Canada 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 29-27, 23-25, 15-12) at the U19 Girls’ NORCECA Pan American Cup on Friday in Puerto Rico.

Mexico will face host Puerto Rico in Saturday’s semifinal while Canada will play for places five to eight.

Mexico and Canada put up a great performance, in a roller coaster battle. In the third set, first Canada missed two set points and then Mexico, in the highest-scoring set of the tournament so far. Mexico recovered from a seven-point deficit (9-16) before falling in the fourth, which forced the tie-break finish.

Taylor De Boer of Canada scored a tournament-high of 33 points against Mexico

Luz Solano, opposite of Mexico: “It’s exciting because it’s what we’ve all been working for and it showed on the court, our enthusiasm, communication, and the desire to keep on battling up to the end. For me, the ups and downs during the match were my nerves of what the game meant”.

Luis Bañuelos, coach of Mexico: “Canada was a great opponent and knew how to take advantage of the opportunities. The positive of the game is the energy of my team, they never dropped their arms and kept on battling. To move into the gold medal match I believe the team needs to focus better on following instructions, in the strategy and the tactical changes. We are going to help them to focus better”.

Taylor De Boer, captain of Canada: “Definitely a tough loss on this one. We all went out with aggression and I really think we fought through it, as well as Mexico; it was a good fight. We have more to give than we let out some moments, but we should be proud of ourselves. We’re still in a warrior mindset, going with whoever we play”.

32 tandems at NORCECA Beach Tour in Varadero

VARADERO, Cuba, May 12, 2023.- The second phase of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour will consist of 32 duos from 16 nations running from this Friday until Sunday at the attractive scenery in front of the Barceló Arenas Blancas Hotel.

16 pairs per gender arrived at the famous tourist empire – at 142 kilometers of Havana – who took part at the preliminary and technical meetings, presided by Mireya Luis, in charge of the organizing committee, and Julio Martinez, director of competition.

The competition starts with a round robin pool-play, four in each gender. The organizers have set up the same number of courts.

In the women’s field, United States, Canada and Cuba have two teams, while in men the visitors present only one and only the hosts have two duets, with their best performers of the moment.

These countries are labeled as favorites to battle for the medals, but Mexico and Puerto Rico join in women with real options of taking a medal.

Atenas Gutiérrez, who back home won the first stage alongside Abril Flores, is competing in this occasion with Susana Torres.

Varadero, Cuba

Waiting for revenge are the losers of that final, from the United States Geena Urango and Carly Skjodt, maybe with more possibilities of removing the thorn, because Atenas is adjusting with her new partner.

Nevertheless coming back on the sand are worldwide known on this blue beach, Puerto Ricans Allanis Navas and María González, first Champions of the first Central American and Caribbean Games of Santa Marta 2022 and runner ups of the Junior Pan American Games of Cali 2021, among other tournaments.

Jaela Auguste, USA, attacks

Calissa Minatee, middle blocker of United States: “We had things in control the entire match and I was for sure confident we could take care of this match even if there were moments of uneasiness. Today we had really good serving pressure, Mexico was out of system a lot and when they were we were patient to care of things. The team gets along very well, we have a great connection once we get on the court. In the semifinals we expect dominance”.

Keegan Cook, coach of United States: “We are excited to be going on to the playoffs, I’m pleased the team has improved with every single match, they are more organized. It’s a young group and they need the experience. We’ve been concerned about our own side of the net but there are some players (opponents) we must pay attention to and we’ll shift our focus a little bit on them going into the next round”.

Luis Bañuelos, coach of Mexico: “United States complicated the game for us, they are strong and dominate the game system well. We tried to battle, we did the best we could, for moments we were on top, and the players fought up to the end. There’s an opportunity to reach the semifinals, but we are going one step at a time, and we will focus on the quarterfinals”.
